I wonder what he is crying about?

Please... all he said was "It's like, Xbox 360 doesn't make my life any better, and in fact, it makes it a lot worse, as you're telling me I can't count on having a hard drive."

If a dev was REALLY that concerned about it they should just make the game require the hard drive instead of just bitching up and whining about it. Plain and simple.
Half Life 2 is the kind of game that would make core owners go out of their way to buy the Hard Drive anyway.

Can not having a hard drive REALLY be that bad considering the WORST it does is put it on EVEN terms with other consoles?

Ah I must have read wrong, because last I heard was that every game had to be able to run without a harddrive.  Im not as in the know as you guys about this shit admittedly so im probably wrong.  Its hard to keep up with new changing developments that come out every day and contradict what was said the day prior.  Guess I'll wait till it hits shelves to see what im really paying for.

I guess he doesnt want to cripple sales by just making a game that appeals to 85% of the install base. Most of which will probably not buy the game.

Please, this is Gabe Newell we're talking about here. The guy's company can make some great games, but he seems to have a habit of blaming others for his own shortcomingings. For example, postponing Half-Life 2 an entire year because some of the source code was leaked...  dry.gif More like, they knew they were months behind and blamed that fact on the leak.

Besides, MS is allowing Square to release FFXI, which will require a hard drive. They'd do the same for Valve, I'm sure. Plus, it's not like the PS2, where you had to take the system apart to add a hard drive (if I'm understanding the 360 Core system correctly). Console manufacturers have been selling upgrades to their systems for years, many of which are required by certain games. The HD should be no different here, just more expensive than most other expansions. But in return, you get more for your money.

MS isn't requiring it but Developers know and have known that there will be consoles out there without a hard drive... 90% of the interviews and whatnot developers have said that it not a problem.

From what I've gathered the decision to make the HDD optional came about the same time as the decision to make the systems ram 512MB instead of 256MB... IMO an extra 256MB is FAR more valuable than a guaranteed hard drive.

Becides Gabe Newell is a bad example as he's had nothing but complaints about next gen consoles in general: http://www.next-gen....id=510&Itemid=2

Icognegro wont let the HDD thing go will he  tongue.gif

Newell is a whiner, plain and simple. Hes gotten too big for his own good(Im talking about both his size AND his status in the industry).

This HDD talk will be dead when it launches, and I for one cannot wait for that to happen.

Unscrewing the network adapter(with a quarter just like the official manual says) or removing a little plate that snaps on and off is taking the system apart? blink.gif

So.......is placing your key in the keyhole, opening your car door, placing yourself in the car, and closing the door like some big take the car apart ordeal to you also?  laugh.gif

i wonder how many times and ways this arguement is going to be started.  i think Gabe is just bitter towards the next generation in general and how its changing the norm of game making.  he would much rather technology stay similar and stagnant.  because of multi-threading and multi-core CPUs coming out on next gen systems he has to rewrite the code to take advantage of the new architecture or else the performance will hurt dramatically.  im sure no developer likes the change but they arent crying about it like he is.

just like in this forum, you will get different opinions in the development community.  you dont see the majority of the developers bitching (hell you dont even see a fraction) so why take this news as anything other then a grain of salt??

I have a question kids.

why is this fat fug whining anyways?

is he silently confirming a game is headed to the 360?

Halflife 2??

If hes talking about part 3, the xbox 720 will have been out for a year or 2 already by the time that game hits shelves.

the man makes a game every 4 or 5 years for shits sake.

Gabe Newell is a PC whore, and unhappy that he can't release a patch every goddamn week.  Have you seen how often HL2 is updated throught shitty steam?

But anyways, I doubt we will ever see a game from Valve on the 360 so wtf is he bitching about?

HalfLife 3 will be out in 2017, so we must be getting HL 2  beerchug.gif

do they even make any other games?

They do have a halflife for xbox (the original) but it's not as good as Halo... though I don't like FPS period... I did enjoy HL on the pc back in the day more than say quake.. but that was just personal preferences.

U sure there was an xbox version of hl1, im sure its just ps2 and dc (although the dreamcast one is pretty rare)?

maybe hes mistaking HL2 coming on xbox for HL 1.  and half life on the ps2 is what HL on the dreamcast should have been.  they finished HL on the DC completly but then just never published it so it never actually out on DC.  sad too because i was looking foward to the game on DC

Many people seem to prefer shifting focus to the appearance of a person, instead of analyzing what he/she is saying. I don't know what a guys' supposed fatness contributes to a discussion in "Hardware Chat", but I guess it's easier to talk about that and not about the technical side of things. You'd expect better from a guys with "tech" in his name and a moderator (in a different thread).

For a developer, having one console with two hardware setups is a bad thing. It means you need more time to focus on compatibility, and have less to spend on engine features and game logic. Not being able to trust on a HDD for gamesaves and downloadable content isn't that big of an issue offcourse: the SDK mostly takes care of that. The danger lies in different hardware configurations becoming "acceptable behaviour" for Nintendo, Sony and MS, so that in a generation or two console development will become just like PC development, where updates to the executable are sometimes needed to even play the game in single-player mode.

As you might have guessed, updating the executable of a game on DVD-ROM is a bit hard.

With MS choice to keep using the old DVD media, space becomes an issue. Using 9 GB DVD's is more expensive then 4.3 GB ones, and if you don't have a scratch disc to extract your compressed high-detail textures and 5.1 sound streams on... you can figure that one out. Having "freedom" in games means having your resources quickly available.

If it's really true that there will be "HDD-only" games then that will suck for developers (dilemma of broader market vs. better graphics/gameplay/whatever), for end-users (customer pays, confusion) and MS will laugh.

I apologize if I responded in a immature way, but if he read every single one of my posts, he'd see that I asked why Newell is whining seeing as he hasnt ever once said hes making games for either the 360 or ps3.

hes sitting on the sidelines and bitching, making him not much better than website editors that have nothing better to do.

Until he gets his hands dirty and shows us he is indeed working on a 360 project and wants to support it, but expected more out of the system, I will then respect his opinion.

Yeah HL  1 and 2 were good, but those 2 games financially dont account for others from devs that get pumped out much quicker and bring in a hell of alot more $$.

Ummm, you do know that the original Counter-Strike was and might still be the most played Online FPS. Thats right Galo 2 doesnt even come close. The only reason the numbers are going down is because everyone is switching to Counter-Strike Source. Now, I hate to be an ass here but whats 2+2.................thats right 4, just like how you have to own HL1 to play CS and you need to own HL2 to play CS Source tongue.gif

lol you took one sentence out of that and turned into something stupid

the point is Valve doesnt pump out the games, and if you think HL 2 sales eclipses some of those huge titles found on a console....

saying its the most played is meaningless in relation to the point im making.

gee the sims is popular, does that mean the developer will now be vocal about the 360 and its problems even though they arent developing a game for it? thats what fatass Newell is doing.

3 Splinter cells in 3 years on "multiple" systems, 2 halflifes and a CS in what? 6 years? lol

and you want to compare the financial outcome? muwhahahaha

your comment to me was irrelvant and taken out of context.

Im really starting to worry about you man, nothing but trolling lately.

well the week it was supposed to come out (think it was the second week of may, don't ask me what year) they released it for about two weeks and then recalled it since they knew the dc was dead. The pal version was out a little before that i think. Anyways I went out and bought the last copy. Eventually the disc got scratched about two months after and I had to get it back but I couldnt find it. So i search good ol' bit torrent and found the pal version and d/led it.

Thats the version i have now, alot of people thought the dc was dead when sega left but what they didnt realise is that some of the softare companies was still committed to puttig out software for the system. Software in japan didnt slow down till bout 2 years after the anouncement.

Anyways, the ps2 was not up to par with dc version in my opinion just because of the horrible jaggies  blink.gif . Anybody noticed how jaggies wasnt much of a problem on the dc?

thats because it used MSAA in a LOT of games. I played quake 3 on it recently and even thru s video on the 77" screen, no jaggies. and it ran friggin smooth. and thats on a 6 year old system.

thats why I was shocked when I started playing xbox games, jaggies fuggin everywhere.

the DC architecture was quite good. The PowerVR inside was a kick ass setup for its time.

thats because 3dfx was crap with their washed out colors and lack of actual power.  Nvidia still had AA back the, hell i have an old ass Nvidia Vanta card in my POS pc and it does AA just fine with games that would be out at the time (unreal, UT, quakes).   they couldnt keep up thats why Nvidia was king, and also it was genious on Nvidias part to include a CPU on the GPU something which has been standard since if you wish to stay in the GPU market

incase is me(which I doubt), graphics wise? I dont think it had one. what did it have for total sys memory? 24 megs? more memory is always better but I never saw a DC game that seemed to be hurt by what it had to work with.

I was talking to you deftech, definitely not deftones ( I dont agree with him much). Some dc fans have different ideas about what the sys lacked from a technical standpoint but I wonder if it would have benefited from a dvd drive. I was just curious to see what you would say.
