Theoretically NO, MS has stated that controllers will not be Backward Compatible.

... but we wont know for sure until the console come out.

Well, with MS's recent  requirement to certify all adapters might throw a wrench in the 3rd party adapter deal.  Hopefully it can be hacked.

LOL!
They will work.
MS isn't making the 360 so that MS products and MS approved products will WORK, they are making it so that only the companies who are approved by Ms can MAKE products for the console.

I would think that IF the adapter was approved then it could "spoof" whatever is hooked up to it to be approved... might be wrong but that seems plausable.

According to IGN they think they will work, but not without some adapter.

"Will the current Controller S be compatible with Xbox 360?
Not without an adapter, though anything of that nature has yet to be announced. What is very likely though is that there will at least be some sort of Controller S adapter released either at or near launch, be it via MS or a third party manufacturer. Don't throw away your Controller S collection just yet... "

The security chip that checks for the chip in the accessory is going to be built into the xbox360 motherboard, and I'm sure that checking will be hardware controlled, not bios/software controlled, so it will be extremely hard to bypass.

I just thought of something else... Each time an an accessory is plugged in, at least that one will be checked for the sucurity chip, but it might also check all the others too.
