Title: Streaming Via Usb.....
Post by: twistedsymphony on August 09, 2005, 10:54:00 AM
Exactly how would a router take up too much space? Heck you could hang it on the wall if you really wanted to. They're not exactly cumbersome.
If you're going to use LIVE (which silver is free) you'll need to plug your Xbox into the network anyway.

As for USB streaming... the 360 can stream from say a memory stick or Pen drive... but direct USB from PC to 360... NOT likely. USB typically relies on a Parent/Child relationship... the 360 and your PC are both parents. Also both will be "supplying" 5V by the USB line so chances are you'd fry them both trying to plug them into each other. I could be wrong, though I've never seen it before.

IF space is REALLY that big of an issue you could always buy a 2nd NIC for your desktop and run a crossover cable It will take up no more space that a USB cable. and it's cheaper than a router (though not by much considering how cheap routers are these days)

Yeah, iw would fry because you'd be sending 5v to apin that is also meant to send 5v, and the GND pins on both would do nothing.
Also, since data + and data + would be on the same wire, so dta transmission would not work.  Data + sends(?) data and data - receives(?) data.  But, since data + would be attached to data + and data - to data -, transmission would not work.
However, maybe a USB crossover?  That would make sense.  At one end, switch the 5v and ground and the data + and data-.  That would work, I assume.

Do you guys know what I mean?

They do make devices to allow you to "crossover" usb connections... don't recall the name now but they are too expensive to be practical and about as big as a router. so in summary it is possible to connect usb to usb but you MUST have a "bridge" (that might be the name of it) for it to work and it's nothing you can DIY... I looked into doing this at my ex's parent's house because their pc didn't have ethernet and I wanted to hook up my laptop to transfer files, I just got a usb ethernet adapter for working on people's pc's like that...

Like has been said a router doesn't take up ANY room really... I think people in china could afford to give up that much realestate.... if space is that bad you should hang out at Sears and see if they will give you a bigger cardboard box to live in wink.gif

Are you insane?  They sell that Fry's for $15.  Its just a normal looking USB cable with a pretty small box in the middle of the cable.  Its not big at all.

Yeah USB cross overs do exist and they are smallish...

But honestly they make small routers...
I have the Linksys WRT54GC

I mean, fuck, you could tape it to the back of your monitor and never know it was there...

Besides, we don't even know if the Xbox360 will support USB crossover streaming... if it doesn't then it's a moot point.

Thank you guys for alla the helpful info. The main reason I have a problem with space is because of heat. I have two PC's connected via a KVM switch. One is a full tower that has an Athalon x2 4800+, 4 gigs of RAM , 2 gForce 6800 Ultra's w/ SLI, you know, the works. The other is an athalon 2800xp plus, 1.5gb RAM, nVidia geForce 6200, just used for WoW. But I live in FL and Heat is a BIG issue. My G/F and I still live at her parents house so we only share a smal bedroom. To add a router would be yet another transformer underneath our itty bitty desk. I onviously don't have room for an HDTV so I have to use my Sony flat screen monitor in it's place. The crossover USB cable sounds like the best of alla the options out there. As is the Lynksys Travel Router. Maybe I'll just wire up a router in the attic.........

They don't put out that much heat... no more than any other wall wart... the transformers are usually pretty small.

good luck

Irony:  someone named "Im Gay" saying that someone living with his GIRLFRIENDS parents was embarrassing.

though cant say much about thw WoW comment, never played it.

anyway....useless comments asides.

with all that hardware hooked up, hope your running a decent ups.  with those kinds of setups, i'd hate to see either computer, or the 360 get fried.  or worse yet, the house.

dry.gif though I took it more as a sarcastic screen name to poke fun of all the gay people on here that would say such things wink.gif

oh, and UPS/surges are crap... you can't stop lightning... UPS is great for uptime, surge is good to plug a bunch of stuff into one outlet smile.gif
