Title: Internal Wifi?
Post by: offsprey on July 27, 2005, 08:13:00 PM
The Xbox 360 Fact sheet declares it WiFi ready A,B, and G. However, in the xbox magazine, it showed a WiFi usb adapter. They wouldnt make an accesary whos function is already built into the device. Can anyone clear this up for me?

I think that is really dumb on MSs part. They get everyone hyped up on all of the great features of the xbox 360 such as Wi-Fi but none of these features work unless you spend even more money on top of the hundreds that you have already spent to buy the add-ons.

go corded, its faster and more reliable. you always have to plug it in somewhere. so until we get some wireless power (other than batteries) i see no real point on buying it.

Who needs Power over WIfi?  I'd ratehr have PoE (power over ethernet).... Well unless that is the new xbox is compatible with my 125mg wireless.. then i might think about it.. untill then will stick to making my own cables.

I have wi-fi on every one of my computers and they all work great.  Wi-fi is completely reliable because even the slowest wi-fi standard (802.11b) has support for 11 megs.  Now you don't get that much speed in real life but none of our internet connections are near that fast yet (OK maybe some of you rich peoples are but certainly not mine).  I have a $30 netgear wireless bridge and I have no latency problems or anything on xbox live.  As for the power issue, if I understand what you are saying, the adaptor will plug into a USB port on the 360 and will draw its power from there, no need to plug it into a wall.  Just my $.02

I'm sorry I disagree... I'm IT and I have ran several test with a 200mw card (most or 30mw) and the router in the same room and only got 3mb transfer rates(802.11b)... this is still "ACCEPTABLE" but not "GREAT" now reliability... careful not to use the microwave or a 2.4 ghz phone in the same area might STOMP your connection in the ground... been proven by several including Laptop Magazine in a wireless shoot out that determined the FASTEST xfer with 802.11g was 32mb not 54 and certienly not 108 like the box claims.  Most (big names) averaged around 14mb and again ALL got stomped on by cordless phone just being turned on in the same room!

Wireless is cool when it's your only option or for hotspots on the go... THAT'S IT!

EverestX:  What the waggle yo talking about?? besides your xbox is plugged in and plugged in to the tv so why not have power for that adapter too???  POE is for AP's that you want to locate outside and such.. NOT for adapters.. kind of silly concept really... and do I really need to address the concept of "wireless power"???? huh.gif

Dude I work IT also man I know.  .. I would rather jsut have an ethernet jack in the back of my box that I Could plug a wifi adapter in and it supply power for it.. And I understand what you mean by it is For access points, but why not have my box as the access point and have my cable modem plugged directly to there.  I guess in affect my xbox would then also become a router/ap.... I wouldn't use Wifi for connecting a console anyway but none the less why not.    But then again usb 2.0 is pretty fast, so who cares.

"wireless power" was a joke btw, it was my point, if your going to plug at least the power cable and AV cables in, one more for an ethernet jack isnt really going to matter. if it were my only option (though i think that really only falls when someone is too lazy to route some cable) id think about it

the only thing in my house on wi-fi is my laptop... and that's only because it has a battery so I don't have to worry about plugging anything in...

there's enough lag playing over the internet I don't need any problems locally with a wi-fi system...

I agree that wireless is only useful for things like hot-spots, with portable machines.

Any machine that's tethered with a power cable, AV cables, etc. should have a hard network cable as well.

Laziness to run a wire is no excuse  sleeping.gif

Oh don't worry that's just par for "cheap" 3 bedroom 2 bath houses here... they have "nicer" places.

I'm building in a small town 20 mins away from the "main" town and I'm gonna have 1500 sqrft and it wil appraise for about 150'sh... if I built that where I currently live it would be 200+

oh, and we still have plenty of open land left... they just want a fortune for it

my xbox is in my basement and my wireless router is on the very top floor. its on the oppisite side of my house!! i used to have a 150ft wire running from the router to my xbox, with two 75ft cables and a coupler, it wasnt that efficient. and these were top notch cables, and a nice coupler. i believe all catergory 7.

having a wire run down 2 flights of stairs sucks balls, so i got a hawking wireless gaming adapter, and it works fine.

lazyness is not my excuse here either twisted.

now that my xbox is completly modded, ftp was only 275 kbs, so i upgraded the antenna's for 20 bucks(retails at 60) and bam im going at 1 to 2 mbs through wireless b.

i love wifi, it kicks ass, fuck wires.

So I'm guessing the ethernet cable that comes with the Xbox360
won't be needed since I already got a cable running into my room, right?

But you gotta admit, I got one hell of a pc.  pop.gif

you really would be better off running windows 2000

and to answer your question, if you can plug in your current xbox that is all you will need.

first off, i live in ny and u can not find any 1 or 2 story houses for less then 350 eveen if theres only one bathroom and if u spread your arms out you hit both walls, and semi-attatched.  I have never seen a house with built in wiring for ethernet even in some pretty nice houses my friends live in.

gigabit ethernet is extremely fast b/w 2 gigabit lan connections. xbox doesn't have 10/100 i bellieve its 10 full duplex but i could be w rong.  most broadband modems also use only up to 100 and most routers as well.
