One of the big unanswered questions about Xbox 360 regards MS's plans for current generation peripherals. It's conceivable that gamers have built up a collection of Xbox controllers that they'd like to continue using on the next generation system. So will MS provide the chance?

The answer seems to be no, at least currently. Interviewed in the latest issue of Famitsu Xbox, MS Product Development Limited Xbox Chief Shinichi Manaka reveals that MS won't offer a USB converter to let players use their current controllers on the 360.
We presume 3rd party peripheral developers will come to the rescue here.

Am I missing something here? Doesn't this product all ready exist? So are we to believe that the xbox 360 will have some mystical, magical USB port that wont allow standard usb devices, or will M$ make it so that the 360 wont accept the xbox's joysticks on purpose?

well i think its just saying that MS will not provide 1st party adapters, so officially won't support it, you will be able to get them of course from 3rd party manufacturers but i don't know how they would hope to get the 360 itself to support it.

And I doubt youll be able to do it with cables that are out today. You need drivers or something to make it compatable.

there is a remote chance that they're built the same way as the 360 wired controllers and a standard USB adapter is all we need.

I want wired controllers!! have you played with wireless? they stink you got to almost point them dirrectly at the port any damn way. Who wants to wait to recharge the battery? Who wants to get up after a night of playing and put the controller on the charger? Who wants to pay for 4 rechargers?? What if you're playing a game, are almost to the last boss and boom your controller starts to fade?

Chord me please. Plus it make the joystick a million times easier to find. wink.gif

Thanks about the sig deal. I thought it was pretty creative myself. The font type used to be selectable in the little font box. Not sure why they got rid of it. but this is the code to my sig..

With the technology M$ are using you will no longer have to point them directly at the port you also shouldn't get interference or lag between the controller and the console. As for the battery life, you won't have to wait for it to recharge since it gets 40 hour battery life off of 2 AA batteries. There is also a rechargable battery pack if you want to use it. If the battery pack dies just plug it into the USB port and keep playing. I know I'll use the rechargable battery pack and when it dies I'll just stick a few AA's in there and keep playing while it's charging and switch back when it's done. It seems like you could get well over a month with doing this with just one pair of AA's. Be happy you're not playing the PS3 it's battery life is a mere 24 hours.

Then you plug in the charging kit and keep playing (you do know about the charge and play kit, dont you?)  rolleyes.gif

Yeah I know about the chargable battery and the charge kit. It sounds like $30 and $20 to me. So lets see, how many of you guys are gonna charge your battery packs 1 at a time? Their basically making a damn joystick be about $50. Even if you only bought two chargers thats like $60. $120 to keep your four joysticks up and running???? FUCK THAT!

And how many times have all of us lost the remote for the TV?
One thing you guys arent thinking about is theft. I've brought four joysticks to a lan party and had bitches try to walk off with the and they were attached to the xbox. How easy would it be to steal the joystick with no wire?

See I don't think M$ is as smart as the regular guys. I'd have a button on the 360 like wireless phones do to page the joysticks. I doubt that feature will be on it.I think they should come with the damn recharger chord automatically so I dont have to worry about this stupid crap.

They aren't going to include that feature because most people won't have the problem of people trying to steal the controllers at LAN's. It shouldn't be that hard to keep your eye on them. As for the battery packs just use AA's then, they are relatively cheap and you have 40 hours to recharge all the packs one by one, of just play on AA's alone. One pair would last a month if you game for an hour a day.

250 hours of gaming on 4 controllers for a mere $11....

I think both sides of each arguement are valid at their core... but it is my opinion that MS is using this wireless as a tech geeky toy... I mean wireless is competely the latest trend... trends are added toys that you don't NEED but are COOL to have.  I would personally rather have a wired controller with the stock box and have the option for these really cool wireless controllers in the aftermarket (I do think they are probably some of the best wirelss controllers made esp. with the accessories.)

Again this is just my opinion and it is based off my limited experience as an IT guy supporting boss's that think they need a wireless mouse to sit at their desk  rolleyes.gif

I end up saying this in all the threads about wireless controllers, but my Logitech wireless was probably the best $50 I've spent in a long time.  There's nothing worse than trying to relax and play a game with an annoying cord dangling between your legs.

Uhh is this a surprise to anyone????

NES controllers not on SNES, SNES controllers not on N64, N64 controllers not on GC
Genesis controllers not on Dreamcast

Really the only one so far that has allowed it is the PSX to PS2 it doesnt surprise me a bit, that xbox controllers probably won't be compatible, however I'm still pulling for my Atari 2600 Paddle controllers to work with X360 PONG

its very possible 3rd party controller companies will make these converters, its as simple as what does "x" send to x360, then if "x" is pressed on xbox controller, then send x360 "x" , after all the x360 controllers are USB, hook 'em up to your computer and see the output, therefore a converter is almost a guarentee from 3rd parties, as long as they are planning to make 3rd party controllers.

it really doesnt surprise me, i never use my psone controllers on my ps2 anyway....

controllers are usually cheap enough to just go out and buy one, even if you need to buy it used or a 3rd party one...

I own a logitech wireless controller for my xbox and I have never felt more satisfied in a controller ever (I own 12 and only 3 works anymore).  I get 100 hours (Lasted me 3 weeks) on two AA batteries (50 or so if vibration is on ) the feel of the controller is near perfect, almost better than the s controller. I never lost it or had anybody successfully stole it. I can stay from upstairs and control xbmc downstairs with no problems. I never  had the slightest hint of lag. The only gripe I have is that the analog stix dont feel as good as the S; and it has this annoying "sleep" feature that turns the controller off when its idle for too along. when its in this mode it can only "wake" up by pressing one of the action buttons (xyab) instead of an independent button for just waking it up.

Im assuming the 360 controller will blow this controller out the water.

That's actually a good point about what xbox it's connected to. I personally own 3 working xboxes and more then enough joysticks for each of them.
One think I think they'll do is have the ring of leds around the 360 button on the joystick indicate what player it is.

Post by: 66Nicks on July 04, 2005, 04:37:00 PM
True, different color "Rings" or leds, like on the front of the original xbox, would be a good way to tell which controller you were picking up.

My main concern still is say 3 xboxes, 2 players on each on LIVE, and your controller is not sending its signal to the xbox/T.V you are sitting in front of.. rather the one in the next room etc.. they must have some option on XBOX360 bootup/menu to detect new controllers or something.. and you would have to select that option, and hit a certain button on the controller you want it to detect and choose which controller port to assign it to.  Like pairing a cellphone to a bluetooth headset.. it could just get really annoying to have to do that everytime you switch around controllers..
Hope to see some innovative thinking.

Besides it has USB ports.... that takes a lot of the trouble with the first one away... assuming you can copy files from a mem stick... but I doubt it because that would kill the market for their memory cards (which start at 64mb btw)  They could theoretically put a complete linux distro in a game save on one of those memory cards.

i doubt they will use a signed chip for the controllers, as it would piss off 3rd parties, anyways the output of the "X" on the x360 controller should allways be the same, this part seems very easy to make.

on another note, the wireless connection of the controllers was allready discussed by MS, there is a connect button on the x360 in order to "register" the controller to the console. The ring of light on the console is seperated into 4 led sections, or quadrents, each quadrent representing the controller which is in use, upper left is 1st to lower right which is 4th (may be different in right to left countries), the ring of light led corresponds with the led on the controller.
