Bump... anyone see this before?

Initially, I had Spykes send me just his motherboard for a NIC repair.  I replaced the ICS PHY and this brought his network port back to life.  I booted up with no problems, using my case, DVD, HDD, and PSU, and tested some FTP transfers.  Mod disabled gave me an error 5 (to be expected, I didn't bother locking my test drive).

Shipped the mobo back.  His mobo had a cheapmod connected with eight wires, not a great install but it worked.  But a wire must have come loose in handling.  Had him ship the whole Xbox back to me for a proper install.   See details in initial thread here.

Removed the Cheapmod and installed one of mine on pinheader.  Booted fine with chip on.  But error 21 with chip off.  Used Slayer's 2.6 to rebuild his C: drive from scratch.  Still error 21.  Even error 21 with my known-good drive once I locked it.

MS dash is accessible from the EvoX menu, just not directly.

Any ideas?  All I can figure is that the power surge damaged more than just the network port.

Spykes: will you be using this mobo for Xbox Live?

Your HDD is probably fine, all you need to do is remove the 10GB Seagate and plug in your 120GB Maxtor.  All your stuff should still be on the drive.

You'll still get an error 21 with the chip disabled, though.

thought u said it wasnt working, thats why you lended me the 10gb seagate? why not just put my hd back in there? do i need to lock/unlock, configmagic, erase, anything? or just open, unplug, plug, close, turn on?

Yep, that's all.  I was running VERY close on time and putting your drive back in would have meant getting to the post office too late, and you not getting your Xbox until two days later.

Let me know how it goes.

try running an older dash on it, then booting a game cd and letting it upgrade the dash for you...

or run a dashupdate.xbe from a newer game

what version and kernal?

Yeah, I'm convinced it's the hard drive itself, also.

The large 120GB HDD has the same exact contents on C: and E: as the working 10GB stock drive.

Along the lines of what FallsInc said, try unplugging your ethernet, boot Halo2 (with chip on or off), and go to the Xbox Live selection.  This should attempt to upgrade your dashboard.  It's worth a try.

I mailed Spykes424 a DVD with some new HDD setup tools, hopefully a new HDD and new MS Dash/EvoX install will take care of the issue.
