unexplained shutdowns are almost always caused by a heat or power issue.  so, unless you severly botched your mod install and are somehow causing it to draw more power than its supposed to, or draw it from a different place than intended, you can pretty much rule out the chip.  since you say your temps are good (the thermistor reading them could have gone bad causing it to read wrong), i would start looking at power issues.  first things first check the mobo for any solder splashes, they might not always be causing a short, except for that instant the box shuts down.  next put in your orignal HDD, though it is brand new it may draw more power than the PSU was intended to dish out and during long seeks could cause voltage drop else where.  if its still shutsdown with the oem hdd, try to find a new PSU.  it doesnt matter if it worked fine before the mod, something isnt working right now, and thats as good a place as any to start.

damn sun's keyboard layout sucks...

So you're saying some harddrives aren't 100% going to work with Xbox?  Do you know of a compatability list so I can pick out a HD that would work 100%?  I used a xapter, so solder splashes are a non issue.  I will try putting back in my OEM HDD.  Of course, if that works, than I'm positive it is my new HDD drawing more power than my PSU is intended to dish.  Is there anything I can do?  I'd be on day 13 of my 14 day warranty, could you please recommend an 80 GIG HDD that would be more reliable than this Seagate Barracuda shit?

Could it be anything related to the fact i damanged the IDE cable whilst installing a new HDD. I ripped a tiny hole in the edge of the cable and now there are wires exposed.

Im not sure if thats making mine turn off randomly???

hey oldskool, I'm not sure about this, but it may be possible PC IDE cables may be compatible with the Xbox, since the opposite is true.  Yes, a broken IDE cable would definitely be a concern, if not that, I would recommend searching Ebay for one.

so where is this thermistor located on the mother board?

I have a 1.0/1.1 having the same random shutdown problem and its getting worse after I did a UDE on it..

I had this problem before..xbox would just shut off, It wasnt heat because I had the top off and fan was working fine, wasnt a chip because I had a flashed tsop, wasnt hdd because it worked fine in my other xbox...But just out of nowhere it would shut off, some times it would play for hours, other times minuets..It would even shut off if I walked to hard on the floor.
To solve my problem..I took out mobo/psu and gave them a good shot of compressed air, then cleaned the bottom of case. Put it all back together...worked like a champ! I think an insect or critter crawled in there and died causing a short some where.
I never had a problem with that machine again.

One of my xboxes does this, the brand of psu is a foxlink I looked at the prongs that the power plug plugs on to, and they looked burnt, right now I am going to fix the solder joints to the prongs, then I may look into some other solutions. What brands do you guys have? maybe something in common with one brand.

should I invest in a new PSU ?

or should I find out where is the temp sensor on the motherboard?

hmm.. i having some of the same problems you guys are having heres my stats:

xbox v1.0
120gig segate 7200rpm
Philps dvd drive
x2.0 wire method
12v red led fan using 12v mod (take wire and ground it to the case)

My problem is that when i turn on my xbox my harddrive will start clicking, and i know its not the hard drive since when i plug in another harddrive it too makes sounds, so i have to jiggle the power cable to get it to turn on and load properly. now thats been going on for the last year, its on and off, sometime months at a time.
Things started getting more serious over the last couple of days. Now when i turn on my xbox my power supply will start poping and sparking and i smell burnt plastic but if i leave it alone for a bit (5mins) it works fine. My xbox is running very cool 100-110 and on the MB 110-120. so i know its not overheating. I'm thinking that my 12v fan with 4 led is taking away too much power but i'm not 100%. I am trying to buy a v1.0 psu but am having a bit of trouble locating one. I was thinking of doing a ATX powerbox switch but i just read that i have to get a special converted to invert the power. Is this true? I have also in the past used a sperate powerbox that i would plug into the harddrive and turn both the xbox and 2nd powerbox on at the same time and that seemed to work.

So main question:

12v  4 led fan mod - Taking too much power?
and if so could i put in my old fan and not have my Psu
                               sparking?
Atx power supply - Can i put one in with out getting a converter?

ok i took out the power supply and noticed right away that the plug was loose on one side, so i flipped it over and was shocked to see that the solder pad had exploded and the  metal thick wire was loose off the solder pad. So i'm going to try to solder it later tomorrow, i'll upload a picture tomorrow to. Still don't know how it happend. I blieve it will still work, since i could get the xbox to work if I moved the plug around before.

My xbox just started turning off tonight.

It started right after we finished a round of Halo 2.

We finished and the box shut off.
When I tried to turn it back on, it got to the flubber and died.
Then it didn't get to the flubber.

So I searched, and came across a few threads about problems and possible solutions. I found one that mentioned cold solder joints. It sounded possible since I have a few internal mods that require soldering.

So I checked into it. My power supply was ok, figured I would check that since I had it out. I did a remote turn on with a doorbell by following one of the tutorials a while back. This was my problem. The connection on the Power/eject assembly had come loose and was shorting on the board. I don't see how the box managed to stay on or off now that I think about it. I don't have my soldering iron here to fix the connection, so I just removed the doorbell, and now it works great. No more problems for me.

My suggestion:

If you have done any internal mods, that require extensive soldering, check for cold or broken joints. It was the problem in at least one situation, it could be the problem for somebody else.
