Title: 04-05-09 1080i Skin Working?
Post by: markj on May 09, 2004, 10:25:00 AM
just noticed a 720p skin was added but my tv doesnt do 720p (dont think it even upconverts to 1080i) so what im wondering is if anyone is running the 720p skin using 1080i (im sure that would be more readable)...anyone tried this out yet? this is my no 1 issue with xbmc right now...just a useable skin for 1080i...thanks...  <

If 1080i is used, the first "fallback" option is the 720p skin, so it should work fine.

It hasn't been tested AFAIK though as none of us devs have HDTVs.  <

i tested it and the 720p skin looks on on 1080i but there is still the small font issue...much too small to read...

there must be an easy way to fix this?? any one get this readable from not directly in front of the tv?  <

I have a HDTV as well and the fonts are too small also.  Is the default font size 14?  I see that there is a size 64 in the fonts folder.  How do I change the font to size 64 in all the menus?

I believe the size 64 font only contains the numbers + : key (for the transulcent time indicator in the background).

You need to generate larger fonts yourself.  Do a search on the XBMC forums to find out how.

You then need to edit the fonts.xml file in the 720p directory and place the new editted copy in the 1080i subdir.

One simple thing might be swapping the size 16 font for the size 14 one (in fonts.xml) or the size 13 one for the size 14 one.  Keep them named the same, just change the actual font that it's pointing too.  (ie font14 will now point to the 16pt font etc.)

Let us know if you have any luck.

Cheers,
Jonathan  <

Note that a 64 size font is likely going to be too big for 1080i.

I'd go for a 24-32pt font I think.  <

Thanks for the replays in both forums jmarshall.  I did the name switching for the fonts and it worked.  I did it for both the mediaplayer and project mayhem skin.  I didnt really work the mediaplayer skin, I think 16 is not enough or its just the skin. The project mayhem skin has size 18 font so I renamed size 18 to 14 and it works really well.  I have a 36 inch tv and I am able to read titles from about 8 feet away.  The side menus were still to small so I changed that size from 13 to 15 in the project mayhem skin again and it was larger but the font was vary hard to read at any distance.  Some other things I found to be a problem when using 1080i is that the matriz screensaver only goes about 3/4 of the way accross the screen, and all the spectrum eqs only display in the top left hand corner of the screen.  If you dev guys have any question about 1080i I can try to help.     <

I didnt change the .xml files.   All I did was rename font 14 to font 18 and font 18 to font 14.  I left the .xml files unchanged.  I just downloaded the black and blue skin and it does have font size 20 in it.  Ill give that a try thanks for the info blinky.  Font 18 works pretty well so 20 should be a bit better.

I tried the size 20 font form the black and blue skin but it is a different font then the 18 from project mayhem.  The size 18 font from project is more of a bold font and much easier to read.    <
