Title: 1080i 4:3

Sadly my TV does not support 720p so I am stuck with 480 or 1080.  When I run the res change I can get 1080 in 16:9 but is there a 4:3 ver as 16:9 looks funny on my screen. Thanks  <

1080i is by default 16:9 (the number of evenly shaped pixels in height and width create a 16:9 image.  Your TV might have a stretch or zoom mode for it.  I believe the problem might be the lack of a good 1080i skin at this point.  Not really sure what you meant by funny or if your tv has a 4:3 screen like some sets from a few years ago.  <

Maybe it is the lack of a 1080i skin then.  By funny I mean all the menus look like they are streched vertically.  If I set my TV (which is not a widescreen set) to letterbox, it looks much better but then anything I play looks sqaushed (as it's being artificially letterboxed at the TV end).  Also the text is almost all unreadably small.  My TV is only a 36 incher so text has to be a reasonable size for me to make use of it.  

What with this talk of upsampling DVDs to 1080i I was hoping I could find a good way to leave it set at that.

Hopefully someone will make a 1080i skin soon or I may just have to learn how to do this skinning thing myself.

720p 1080i and 1080p are all 16:9 formats. You will not find a 4:3 tv that will dispaly anything above 480p  
4:3 is only available in 480i and 480p from the xbox

This is not a limitation of the xbox, but a limit of the standard

The only work around would be to use a stretch / zoom mode on your tv and it will scale a 720p input... but i doubt it will  <

Sadly my TV won't do anything with a 720.  When I bought it I was stupid and didn't research, even if I had I probably would not have realized the value of 720p support.  As is I can have 480p and 480i and 1080i but nothing else :(    <

I have a 16:9 set and the skin is for the most part very challenging.  Maybe someone will engineer one soon - it's not too bad though.

Almost no CRT based set does 720p but some models scale it.  For the most part the only people who have a need of 720p upscaling on a CRT tv are Xbox users and this is only because the current Xbox lacks the horsepower for many HDTV games and 1080i taxes the system significantly more than 720p so this leaves us with only 1 choice in HDTV resolution.  The next generation of consoles with have 720p and 1080i support.  Take a look at the number of 720p games, it's not like you are missing tons of good content.  As for your TV being 4:3 and an HDTV, that sort of introduces some quirkyness to 16:9 content but it's infinitely preferable to a standard set.  <

720p skin support is in CVS.

1080i will soon be using the 720p skin set if it can't find it's own .xml files.

The devs don't have HDTV sets, so we can't do this ourselves.  We need YOU guys to do it for us.  <

Correct me if I am wrong, but a 16:9 is a widescreen right?  I bought mine about a 3 years ago so I think I just missed that opportunity.  I was actually under the impression that 720p was where most of the high quality graphics were comming from these days.

Well I will look into this skinning, been a while since I dabbled in programming seriously or anything though (QBASIC ring any bells?), maybe I can just lend my TV and xbox to the dev team and then they can make some 1080i stuff for me? :)

Oh and I will make it a point to try Project Mayhem, but I didn't like the look and color scheme, so...

Hmm, not true.  I have a Hitachi 43"  HDTV  that is 4:3 and displays 480p, 720p, and 1080i.

I would be delighted to see a 1080 skin that is formatted for a 4:3 HDTV.

Correct.  Some 4:3 TVs did come out with a 1080i mode - this was just as widescreen was becoming the new standard.

1080i mode on the XBox is only 16:9, however, as is 720p.  This is how it was supposed to be.  There was only 1 generation of 4:3 TVs that supported the 4:3 1080i mode - it's done by squashing the 1920 pixels across into the 4:3 space.  (ie non-square pixels).

You can however get XBMC to show everything in the correct aspect ratio (at least as far as pictures and movies go).  To do this, simply calibrate the pixel ratio (via Settings->My Videos->Screen Calibration) so that it is around 0.75.  That should make everything look OK on a 4:3 1080i set.  <

My tv is 720p Native.
Im more than willing to help in any way possible. Cept donating my tv, sorry.. Kinda attached to it.
