Ok, I tried this.
I own a Dell Inspiron 1545, and planned to make backups using the DVD Drive included.
It did not work well. IMGBURN told me the burn was successful, but when I tried them,
I got a disc read error. I lost count of how many coasters I had made. At that time,
I didn't own a desktop computer, but I had a few spare DL DVD drives laying around, so
I ripped the top off of that (so I don't have to use a pin to pull the tray out), and hooked
it up to the laptop using an IDE to USB adapter.
I tried burning Halo Reach WITH THE ALREADY RIPPED ISO, and it worked fine, so it was
not just a case of a bad rip, as I used the same one again.
Since using that set up, I have not burnt a single coaster, apart from using some low, cheap
quality discs.
And yes, IMGBURN works fine
Hope to have answered your questions, as they are answered from experience.

Never had any joy with laptops, I've tried on a least 5 and they've all given me coasters.

my dell laptop 1720 and it works ok
but after a few discs i realised i hadn't set the booktype properly and it was showing booktype as dvdr + dl which is not recommended...
so i found a firmware that made burned discs show as DVDROM booktype which i believe is recommended

Yes, the booktype can make all the difference in the world with compatibility. Some drives require you to set them manually, other burners (such as the Pioneer drives) will do it automatically for you on DL DVD+R discs.
