Title: Lg Gh22ls50 Any Good For Back Ups?
Post by: Accord on May 15, 2010, 11:06:00 AM
That model, like a bunch of others is your budget buster drive. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Recording backups is more about the quality of the discs + speed of recording.

Check here if there's something else you might like. They're all shipped free.

These are the discs I use:

There are many haters of these, but with my setup (ImgBurn, 2.4x record speed, Sony recorder), I've never created a bad disc.

LG uses either Panasonic or Renesas chipset based drives. I personally do not like either. That particular LG drive you mention seems to use a Renasas chipset, and is reported to have poor burn quality.

I would do what the above poster said and get a drive from newegg (though not an LG). The Optiarc AD-7260S with Free Shipping for 21.99 seems to be the best bang for the buck ATM at newegg (actually IMO it's the best out of the box drive on newegg at the moment, unless your confortable crossflashing drives. if you are confortable crossflashing, i would recomend getting the ASUS DRW-24B1LT and crossflashing it to an iHAS424 or an iHAS524, however the asus is a bit more $$).

That Optiarc uses a NEC chipset which is miles away from that LG you are looking at (in a VERY good way).
The Asus uses a MediaTek chipset and is actually a rebadged LiteOn, those ASUS drives are also miles away from the LG and are just as good as those NEC chipsets, however they seem to be more consistent burners than the AD-7260/7240 series burners.

In regards to media I only use MKM media (verbatim dual layer) for my dual layer burns, whether they are xbox game back ups, dvd burns, or home movies... Wouldn't really recomend anyone to buy memorex...
