Just purchased an external DL DVD burner.  HP 1040r MH21 . Very good technically and well only £40 from Amazon.

Just get a different burner for you laptop. Newegg sells them, as does eBay. They're very easy to replace, one screw on the bottom of the system, pull out the drive, pop in the new one, replace screw.
