You really want to steer clear of cheap media.
The worse the media the harder time your laser has of reading the disc. That means slower load times and shorter laser life.
Also, some crap media, after you burn the ISO, it won't even play the damn game...it is that shit that the layer break is just shit and the disc won't play.
It only costs like a little bit more to upgrade to Verbs...so it is an investment worth while.

This is what has worked on my 360.
The Verbies
Nexxtech (only seen these at Circuit City)
Memorex (also seen at CC, was on sale last week)
The only issue i've had with any of them is the Memorexs, they tend to load slower then all the others.

I use Sony DVD+R DL discs. However, in Imgburn they show up as Ritek discs. Every single one I have backed up with the Sony Dual-Layered discs is playable in my Hitachi 47DJ drive.

I also use the Sony DVD+R DL, 8.5 Gb, so expensive though

For my list I would say the Verbies, Nexxtech, Memorex...only because I've had no issues with the first two. When I flashed I set back my drive read speed to 8x, giving the fact that it would be reading backups from time to time.

I use Memorex

A friend gave me a 20 Pack of UME WINDATA DVD +R DL 8X .. Gonna try these out tomorow and see if they work.
Drive is Hitachi 47 ( or 74 which ever it is ) Firmware is iXtreme1.4 at read is set at 8X.

As the title says... Is Verbatim MIS the only media that works ? or have people tried other, possibly cheaper, media that works just as well?
How many times do we have to go through this? As has been explained on here time and time again, there are SOOO many variables as to whether or not a disc works. What particular 360 drive and firmware revision do you have? Burner and firmware revision? What software and version are you using? To say nothing of the fact that no two 360 drives (even if they are the exact same model and firmware revision) will read the exact same things. Have other people had success with other media? YES. Is there any media that offers the hassle free universal compatibility and durability of MIS Verbatim? NO. Hence the reason why so many of us recommend avoiding the other media as it eliminates all of the aforementioned variables. Even the "cheaper media" isn't cheap if you get a bunch of coasters. If you can find some for say 50 cents (USD) or less per disc then I agree the risk is minimal and it would be worth taking a shot at the cheaper discs but not at the average price that the "cheaper" discs run these days.

You are right that verbs are the best but some drives can still have problems with them. I've had more than a few 360's come my way that won't read verbs, yet will happily read cheap media like Aone. I've even had drives that will read backups and not originals.
I still love verbs though as they are deffo the most consistant.

Are they MIS or MII Verbs though?

I have used sony accucore +r dl's and have had absolutely no trouble with them. They are rebranded ritek anyways.
I got some memorex from officemax and the one backup I made on them sucks, dre's and rattling(RATTLING IN THE DRIVE!). I think they may have had a crappy die or something for pressing these recordables, because I've never heard a dvd rattle in the drive before. The sony(ritek) discs work great, but the memorex are sketchy at best. I'm not sure why the memorex discs rattle around in the drive exactly, but when they don't do that, they work fine. I can go through a few songs in rockband before it starts acting up. Perhaps I should burn it again?

MIS, burned AT 2.4X on a pioneer 111d with latest FW.
Some drives with old lasers can be really strange about what they read.

That is true.

i am currently on 25PK INtact DVD+R DL..
i bought 25PK for $20 Au, which is damn cheap...
no problems yet...on Hitachi and MS25 drives..will test in benq later..

Ive noticed a few things my self and with friends when messing about with discs:
Drives
- Hitachi V59 (iExtreme 1.4, 12x)
- Hitachi V47 (iExtreme 1.4, 12x)
- BenQ (iExtreme 1.4, 12x)
Burning
- IMGBurn
- Pioneer 112D DVD-RW DL
- Burnt @ 2.4x
Aone Discs
Burnt 6 ISO's to Aones and every ones was very unstable, none played in the BenQ drives and the Hitchi's read them but then after a while they died.
Verbatim Discs (Singapore)
Burnt the same ISO's and no coasters.
Verbatim Discs (India)
Burnt the same ISO's and no coasters.
I know others who use Aones and say they have no problems but hey, thought id contribute to the thread as I like messing with this stuff lol.

Phillips are either CMC Mag or Ritek made and Windata are all Ritek made last I checked.

burner: POS that came with my machine (Dell Inspiron 530)
burn speed : was set to max (6x is what the disks could handle) average burn speed was 4.5 though.
Disks : Verbatim india
Reader : 360 benq drive
burn software : xbox backup creator and imgburn
My first backup, full stealth, works perfect. 360 drive noise and loading seemed to be about the same.
