Just recently I started getting open tray errors on my recent backups. Nothing has changed in my backup procedure. I'm using a Kreon Drive and burn with a 111d on Verbatim DL. What could be going on? Its just recently started happening. I've also tried re-ripping and re-burning the bad ones at 4x versus 2.4x. I also tried again at 2.4x. I have extremely bare bones back ground processes on WinXP. I've tried with and without the Nvidia IDE drivers. All the same results. On inital play of the backup it will usually work, subsequent tries are hit and miss with Open Tray coming up at insert or in the middle of play?
Im using a Ixtreme1.2c Fast, MS25 Samsung drive.
What should I do?
Should I first try the slow firmware, or should I just get a new laser. I'm leaning towards the latter....since I should be able to use fast, since I've got the ideal burner/media. Rubber band trick is in there too.....but I'd still rather get a new laser.
I immediately gravitated towards buying a new laser for my MS25 Samsung. (Which is best, HD63/67/68, seems they are all compatible.) For those prices of lasers....I'll get two. Anyways....what could be wrong?
It will be a bit until I get back to my Lite-On drive so I can Scan these discs that are causing problems.....but I highly doubt they are coasters or have alot of PI/PIF. I actually did scan before, and the error count is totally within reason. When the discs load, they play fine. Its when I reload I get open disc errors. Thats except for a short stint where the open disc started and I noticed it because games would stop with the open disc error?
Whats going on? In the beginning I used Ritek and an NEC burner, but only for a little while. Could this have destroyed my laser? I've never adjusted the pot either...so burnout is a no go.
How safe are the Ebay lasers? I'm thinking HD63, since my samsung is an original...99% sure it has the 63. But what if I get a china oem one......Suggestions?
Suggestions? Thanks.

Do the older backups that you burned a few months back still work fine? Check the recent spindles of Verbatim to see if they are made in India or Singapore.

Im not sure if this helps but i started to get open tray on my 1st xbox 360 before it died, tried to fix it by swapping the DVD drive but then i got the 3 red lights that i would fix and then it would start again within a few days so I had to buy a new one.

Singapore.....They aren't the new India ones.
The old backups still work fine, I'm pretty sure. I'm trying to make my old backups give me open tray...but I can't make them. This is so strange. There are some from the same spindle that even work fine. I'm going to run some K-Probe tests on these discs...and see whats up. Nothing has changed....so weird.
I tried burning one of the bottom of the spindle...same thing.

try another program, i was using imgburn but then some discs didn't boot, changed to clonecd and it solved my problem.
maybe your problem is harder to solve, but it's worth a try i think

With all due respect....and I appreciate your reply....I do not see how that would make any difference. This weekend I'm going to kprobe all these discs and post the scans.

I've recently started having the same problem, my drive is a hitachi 46D though. but same deal exactly recent burns are giving open tray and unreadable for almost every disc in a recent singapore verbatim spindle i grabbed at futureshop. originals and previous backups on the same singapore verbs still work perfectly. if you find out the cause i'd love to hear.

Could the laser have been jostled......They seem to be working now. When it started....I tried horizontal and it didn't help...so now its back to vertical. Could the laser be kinda funked. IDK, it seems to be working now.

Disregard that last comment. It seems as if new backups seem to jolt the system...then everything comes back to normal after awhile. Strange.

Thats a Kreon 1.0 pulled Pioneer 111d burned 2.4x. Just wanted to let you know these burns are good. The rest of my burns are just like I'm pretty sure, in the process of scanning more.
I know the second layer kinda gets higher, but average is still just 10. First layer is excellent, second layer is fine. At least thats the way I interpret it. And its really only the last 2 gigs of the second layer that go above a 30 excellent mark. And yet it looks quite a bit different than a previous burn where the only spike to 60 is at the layer break. I gotta do more scanning. Still thats not THAT bad. Thoughts?

I took my HD65 Samsung POT down by 190 Ohms from original setting of 3.94. All the recently burned verb backups are booting now everytime....and take much less time to initialize. However, some video is skipping. Should I progress lower? Here is the scan of a skipping disc. Burned in Pioneer 111d on Verb Singapore. I've been looking at scans of Dual Layer media....and the hike in PI and PIF errors on the second layer is pretty much a fact of dual layer media. So this is really quite a good burn.
Oh I also tried the Rubber band trick....and it didn't do anything for me.

Now I'm not getting an "open tray" error....but I put in a disc and the disc either starts loading and then reverts to the main menu with status "opening" on the drive tray, or the disk just reads very briefly and reports "opening."
Is this a problem with my drive or is it a laser media problem. Should I JUST get a new stack of verbs...this stack seems cursed.
