Title: I/o Errors!
Post by: DOOBIOUS on October 08, 2007, 09:33:00 AM
I just want to start off saying that I've been a member on this forum for quite some time and I've really enjoyed and appreciated all the sound advice I've recieved and have given to others over the years. I'm having a problem and would appreciate any advice to a solution. It might be a long post, so...I'm sorry. Well, I've been having this I/O error when using DVD Decrypter and it's really not making much sense to me. The equipment I'm using is a computer I built myself with Windows XP SP2. My burning drive is the Plextor PX-716A. I recently had to format my hard drive that had my OS on it and start from scratch. I had to reinstall all my software, but decided not to use Nero and stick with Roxio EMC10. When I try to burn a .img file with DVD Decryopter I get this I/O error message....

I/O Error:
Device [1:0:0] PLEXTOR DVDR PX-716A 1.11(G:)(ATA)
Scsi Status 0x02
Interpretation: Check Condition
CDB: 2A 00 00 00 00 20 00 00 20 00
Interpretation: WRITE(10) - Sectors: 32-63
Sense Area: 70 00 04 00 00 00 00 04 00 00 00 00 09 03 00 00 00 00
Interpretation : Spindle Servo Failure

The discs I'm using are the Sony DVD+R DL's. I've tried at least half the remaining spindle trying to get them to work, but get this error in the beginning stages of burning. My burner doesn't even burn anything to the disc. The funny thing is that I never had that problem before my system crashed and had to reinstall my OS. There's no question that the discs are good, because I burned with them before the crash. I decided to try and use some Verbatim DVD+R DL discs and they worked flawlessly. Why would they work, but not the Sony's especially when they did before? I updated the firmware to my drive at least 4 times, changed booktype settings, the whole 9. I felt my decision not to use Nero isn't the problem, but could it be? I noticed a lot of people who has either DVD Decrypter or IMGBurn also has Nero installed on their system. I don't know.....I need some schooling on this. I really would appreciate some help on getting to the bottom of this. Thanks

I too have had the same issues. I too use a Plextor px-716a, and have tried multiple firmwares new & old. I have no issues using the Verbatim DVD+R DL 5pack that I get at the local BB. I had ordered the 10 pack spindle from newegg.  The mfg disc codes are different between the two, but the 10 pack discs always give me the I/O Error or Power Calibration Error.

I would like to know the solution for this too..

I had no problem burning ISOs using Verbatim DVD+R DL and PLEXTOR DVDR PX-716A until I ran out and bought a similar DVD+R DL by Verbatim. Now Xbox Backup Creator is giving a Spindle Servo Failure every time it tries to burn.

Anyone has the solution yet?

Is the media code different from the previous bunch of disks that worked fine? Are you certain your burners firmware supports the media code of the new disks you have gotten?

The only times I have run into I/O errors on a burner are when
- the burner's optics are too dirty to read or write anything properly
- the burner is just about dead, and it happens when writing randomly on all types of media (CDR, DVD+/-R, DVDDL)
- the disks are junk (recently, memorex DL did this to me)
- the burner doesn't support the media code (my aging benq 1620 doesn't support any of the verb DL media codes as apparently there was a bug in MKM DL write strategies, and the manufacturer seems to have discontinued updates with lite-on's buy out)

That said, plextors are some of the best burners out there - though they seem to have some quirks. You might want to use google to see if there are any software incompatibilities (burning software) that are known to show up on that specific media code (google: "plextor yourdrivemodel yourmediacode problems" sans quotes, filling in the info on mode/media code.)
