For what its worth, why not try reflashing?

SH-D163A Kreon Firmware

Flash SAMSUNG SH-D162C or SH-D163A hacked Firmware:

this step only has to be executed one time because the KREON Firmware remains in the drive
forever or until you flash another firmware into it.

- make sure there is no CD/DVD inside of the drive!!!
- start (doubleclick) sfdnwin.exe
- select your Samsung drive from pulldownmenu: TSSTcorpDVD-ROM SH-D16....
- at the top left click "DOWNLOAD FILE OPEN"
- select file: SH-D16.......XB360_KREON_....bin
- at the top left click "START DOWNLOAD" (button in the middle)

after successfully flashing the drive you will receive the message: "DOWNLOAD OK!! RESTART WINDOWS."

Reboot your pc. You can now use the drive for making legal Xbox-360 Backups.

I have a feeling that is information that you already know, but  I am sorta stumped on this problem at the moment honestly!

UPDATE Sorry I just realized you tried to reflash but it didnt work.  If I were you, I would definately try and return it or get a new one, and see what happens.  Either that, or how about go for the SH-D162C? Its IDE instead of SATA, so maybe that will help?

You've probably sus'd this out already but the H353A drive is just a Toshiba-Samsung version of the Sammy D163A drive.  I've got one, flashed it fine with -nocheck and 0.80 Kreon f/w.  Its creating me backups nicely.  No need to shoot the vendor!

Again, you may already know but there is an incompatibility with the H353A/D163A and VIA Sata.  You'd need to have it on a non-VIA Sata channel to flash and use.

Another tip - try Schtrom v3.2 as another backup option.

Of course that may not be giving you any answer at all to your original XBC problem...
