I bought an Xbox 360 pre off eBay. And I am having a few problems.
The problem Are as follows.
1) I Have the Hitachi drive but I dont know what firmware it has been modded with (should I take the Xbox apart and flash it with a firmware of my choice)
2) Have I bought the correct writer (Samsung SH-S182D)
3) what s the best software to use for ripping and burning the games (Xbox_Backup_Creator, wxRipper-1.2, 360Xtract)
4) What the best tutorials to follow for my xbox360 setup I Have been looking for about 3 days now trying to follow so many tutorials
I am so sorry to bother you guys but this forum it my last resort I am well confused. I am normally good at this sort of thing but I feel a bit over my head in this one.

Lots of questions but here we go:
1) I Have the Hitachi drive but I dont know what firmware it has been modded with (should I take the Xbox apart and flash it with a firmware of my choice)
You already bought it preflashed, its a good idea to never fix something that isn't broken. If you wanted to play with the firmware it would have been best to buy it unmodified. If you still want to update yer FW read this, taken from the garyOPA 2.1 readme:
Restoring your drive
--------------------
RESTORE.BAT automatically restores your drive back to original state
* To RESTORE a drive, it must be in "Mode B" and have "Drive Letter"
* Then just run RESTORE from "Command Prompt" while running windows.
* The new RESTORE does not need any backup, it will 100% restore your
drive back to "ORIGINAL" state as long as it is visible in Windows!
* Program will not start unless it detects the version of your Hitachi!
* You can restore any drive, even "v1.1" or "f900" or your own hacks.
* System will check flashed firmware, and redo until 100% completed.
* Once you get the PASS / DONE line, you can shut-down the system.
2) Have I bought the correct writer (Samsung SH-S182D)
The pioneer 111D is, hands down, the highest recommended burner to use. I don't know about the SH-S182D but my computer repair guy says samsung DVD burners are unreliable. I know that tells you nothing as to whether it will work or not. But if it doesn't, go with a 111D. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
3) what s the best software to use for ripping and burning the games (Xbox_Backup_Creator, wxRipper-1.2, 360Xtract)
To rip:
wxripper or the tools that come with your garyOPA firmware (read readme)
If you have the elusive SH-D162C drive then Xbox_Backup_Creator or 360Xtract will work great & you dont have to pull apart your 360 every time you want to back up a game. PM lucho for the SH-D162C as he is hooking me up & is a reliable source.
To burn:
Clonecd is easiest because layerbreak is set automatically but if you cant use it check out this link http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=514437
4) What the best tutorials to follow for my xbox360 setup I Have been looking for about 3 days now trying to follow so many tutorials
Pinned at the top of every subforum is basic things you need to know about for the specific topic discussed there. Here is a good collection of tuts though. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=513412
Read until yer eyes start bleeding, thats how I did it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
Hope this has helped.

Cheers for your advice
I bought a pioneer 111 writer and made a successful backup of dead rising. I had already bought a SH-D162C for £10 from a local computer shop here in the UK there are loads of SH-D162C's. I was worried that the DL disks I had bought were not going to be good enough because there were generic and not a known brand but they seem to work fine.
I used Xbox_Backup_Creator on the default setting for the for the back up
