Title: Samsung Drive Compatability Thread
Post by: ILLusions0fGrander on September 09, 2006, 12:53:00 AM
threads on hardware / software to use for a working backup are getting out of hand and need to be centralized, please use these instead of making new threads.

There are a couple already made, but its been a while and there are newer firmwares available and now seems to be a good time to begin a new thread.

Let me start each of these thread by saying YOU CANNOT GO WRONG PURCHASING VERBATIM DVD+R DL DISCS!
they are currently the best discs available for 360 backups, flat out.

you can get them fairly cheap, sometimes as low as $1.50 a disk in packs of 10-30.

any other media you use, may work for you at first, but dont be surprised to see a dirty disc error in the future.
store brands, off brands, etc.)

anyways, lets try and keep this thread clean, stating what works in the same format.

(I am putting this in both hitatchi and samsung threads as an example, please keep it as clean as you can with what works.)

Working bakcups made with:
DVD firmware:        Xtreme firmware for TS-H943 (old release with 0800 disc)
Burner            NEC 111-D
App            Clone CD
Media             VERBATIM DVD+R DL
Method            ISO buster
Speed            2.4x and 8x both working

http://www.xbox360flasher.com/360_trials.php

has been doing what you're asking for a while already... yup.

And as for Verbatim - if you've got a pioneer - buy mom and pop DL's and your backup will run.

Media is irrelevant.

edit:

im setting some of these posts as invisible, as it got out of hand a second... anyways, this is not a flame/agrue thread, just a listing of working setups.

jester, if you got my pm, please take a quick second to put some info out on the importance of using quality media as opposed to mom and pops, just so people know that media is NOT irrelevant.

Will a Verbatim DVD-R DL work? My place is selling Verbatim DVD-R DL @US$24.8 for 10 disc in a cake box instead of US$31.80 for Verbatim DVD+R DL 10 disc. Since DVD-R DL is cheaper for me, i had bought DVD-R DL instead. Is there any special step to take for burning backup into DVD-R DL disc?

-R DL do not have the same layerbreak properties as +R DL

avoid -R DL

Couldn't this be overcome by setting a different layer break?

No that is one of the problems with D/L DVD-R as it is not nearly as flexible for such things as D/L DVD+R.  @rat poison, where exactly do you get your conclusions about media not mattering?  How many drives have you tested this theory of yours on?  How many burns have brought you to this conclusion?  How many people have you talked to that can confirm your claims?  Unless you have done alot of research into all of the above then your claims about media being irrelavent are completely unfounded.  Having a few burns (or even many burns) on one or two drives is hardly a significant test.  It is true that a number of people have had success with other media on the Samsung drive and that the Pioneer 111D is truly a marvel for it's versatility (especially with the 360) but the fact of the matter is that regardless of application Verbatim has consistantly shown to be more flexible and more durable.  Durable being the key here.  Take a look at the error rate scans done on Verbatim D/L media and compare them as a whole to other D/L media.  Nothing else comes close.  Even when I burn my 2.4x D/L Verbatims at 8x, I don't get anywhere near the number of average PIFs that folks get burning other D/L media.  Error rate scans aren't 100% but they can help you predict the longevity of your media.  In addition it helps to do scans several months down the road.  Cheap quality media might burn and scan well at first but it can often take a severe nose dive after several months.  The bottom line is that you could easily end up with a non-working disc after less than a year.  Also, which country are you located in?  If you live in the US, then honestly it is just dumb to buy anything but Verbatim as the sales on them are becoming more and more frequent and they can often be brought down to where they are actually cheaper than the cheapest POS D/L media that is out there.  Case and Point a couple of weeks ago newegg had a 20 pack of D/L Verbatims for $31 shipped (about $1.55 a disc).  On top of that they had a $10 MIR, so after rebate it works out to 20 discs for $21 shipped (about $1.05 a disc).  Even the cheap quality stuff doesn't usually get that cheap.  In other countries I understand that the difference can be quite a bit more so you will have to weigh the risks.

I have burned about 15 backups using Bulkpaq DVD+R DL (type: CMC D01). Cheap as chips but excellent quality, I have never had any coasters and no problems at all in getting them to run.
I have heard bad things abut Bulkpaq in the past but I have been using single layer Bulkpaq DVDs for years in the original xbox and they all still work perfectly.

My 360 drive is Samsung m25 ( using Xtreme 3.2 firmware)
My burner is Pioneer 111D using firmware 1.23.

One other point. I couldn’t get my 111D to even recognise Traxdata discs at all, so I’ll stay away from them in the future. I ended up selling them on ebay and got most of my money back.

Burned with CloneCD using Boot Camp. Works like a charm in slow & fast speed, and the drive even seems to make less noise and load faster in slow mode with the Verbatim media than with my other discs (TraxData).

BURNER: NEC ND-3550A
MEDIA: GQ (Fry's Brand) DL
CHIPSET: VIA 6421L(RAID-Newegg has the non raids on 3 weeks wait, i paid the extra 5 bucks) PCI SATA CARD
F/W: Xtreme 3.0
DVD Drive: TS1493 (was MS28, biggest pain in the ass to flash)

I didnt think the fry's brand would work with these games but it works perfectly fine.  No coasters yet.

I did have problems with the via card freezing up my computer everytime i'd turn on the computer and the 360.  Uninstalled the raid utility, once I did that.  I was able to see the drive in windows no problem

Used DVDINFO pro to extract .bin files.  Unlock code didn't work for dead rising but ISO buster detected the game data so I didn't have to worry about that.  Ripped and burned at 2.4x.

All works great.

I see everyone is using 3.3, any problems with it?  I'm thinking about flashing mine from 3.0 to 3.3

I think rather than having only what setup you got you should also include ALL configurations. People are having problems with identical parts is because their configuration is differnt. I know first hand because i was having tons of problems so I will be the first to share my configuration.

First the parts:

SH-D162C w/ kreon v.81
Pioneer DVR-111D
Programs I used XBC, and the iso builder method
Mobo: Gigabyte DS3 board, with only 1 IDE (very important)

Second is the configuration:
Initally what I did was use my Pioneer Burner and Hard DRive on the IDE cable. HD being master and Burner being slave. That burned games fine. No errors.

After, i decided to install my Sh-D162c drive in my pc so I took off the HD, put in a sata drive instead and put the samsung dvd rom as the IDE Master. -ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE AND MADE 5 COASTERS AFTER VARIOUS TESTS-

So what happened then,
I left the pioneer drive on the IDE cable, made the samsung SH-d162c as an external DVD ROM with an adapter and everything was okay again.

So in conclusion, if you are experiencing problems, my solution was this, the DVD-ROM and DVD writer has to have it's own IDE cable or connection, they cannot share one. or else you will get errors out the @$$.

This may not fix all the problems but should certain help some people.

Personally I've burned a few games on Memorex DVD+R 2.4x media in a Memorex external 8x drive (no particular brand loyalty, thats just the only discs they had at Circuit City and the drive is a rebadged Lite On).  Some worked, some didn't.

What surprises me here is that not one single person has tried Taiyo Yuden discs?  Taiyo Yuden discs are the absolute best in terms of quality for every other application in the world, so I assumed I'd come in here and find everyone saying to pay the extra coin and look for the "Made in Japan".  You won't find them in your local store probably, but as far as consistency and dye quality, they're supposed to be the best.  I'll have to get a pack and test them out and report back on my findings.

not sure if that drive has bitsetting, if it does, you have to see if you have to enable it first. the dvr-111d is automatic.

as for the aspi drivers, just do  search for force aspi.

maybe this will save some people some headache....

Lite-On SHW-160P6S coastered 2 disks using firmware P0B (the latest), getting power calibration errors.  Downgraded to P09 (2 from the newest) and works fine.

Using verbatim media, at both 2.4x and 4x...both work great.

i don't think taiyo yuden makes Dual layer discs, or at least I havn't seen any

Actually they do make D/L DVD-R discs but they are currently only available in ASIA.  That and given the format and the cost I'm not sure I would risk the purchase.  Believe me though if they made D/L DVD+R discs and had them widespread, I would ditch my Verbatims for them in a heartbeat.

360 DVD: Toshiba-Samsung TS-H943 ms25
PC Burner: Samsung SH-S182D SB04
Method: SchtromXtract
SATA Chipset: ICH5 and ICH8 (both fine)

Traxdata 2.4x DVD+R Dual Layer Non-Printable
Disc Dye: RITEK D01
Burn Speed: 2.4x
Burn App: CloneCD / Imgburn
Success: 100%

RiDisc 8x DVD+R Dual Layer Non-Printable
Disc Dye: RICOHJPN-D01-67
Burn Speed: 4x, 6x, 8x
Burn App: CloneCD / Imgburn
Success: 0% at any speed (25 coasters)

Aone 8x DVD+R Dual Layer White Faced Printable
Disc Dye: RICOHJPN-D01-67
Burn Speed: 4x, 6x, 8x
Burn App: CloneCD / Imgburn
Success: 100% at 4x, 0% at 6x (1 coaster), 0% at 8x (1 coaster)

Traxdata were far the better discs, but of course are the most expensive. RiDisc discs were horrible, they all burned sucessfully but failed verification on imgburn and all issues were in the second layer of the disc, randomly from 52% -> 67% before I got an I/O Error about the condition of the disc. Aone discs were excellent, although only write at 4x sucessfully and passing verification on imgburn, if I burn at 6x or 8x with these discs I get I/O errors in the first layer when verifying even though they burn sucessfully. The other problem with the Aone discs was a very small amount of stuttering in the games, or random loading. I backed up my Gears of War original for example and I'd say about 3 or 4 times during the game it would stop and load for about 1-2 seconds then continue fine.

Think I'll stick with the Aone discs, they burn faster, have very minimal issues and burn nearly twice as fast as the Traxdata discs, although the Traxdata were easily the best out of the 3.

360 DVD: Toshiba-Samsung TS-H943 ms25 (Currently Flashed to 4.2B - Plan to go to 5.1C)
PC DVD : SH-D162c Running Kreon 8.1 Firmware (For making ISO's)
PC Burner: Pioneer DVR108D (Updated Firmware to 1.20)
Method: Xbox Backup Creator 2.3 (xtreme)
SATA Chipset: Via 6421a External PCI Card

I use XBOX backup Creator to make the ISO's, but have had better success using CloneCD to write the ISO's back to disc (Rather than relying on XBC to make the burn).

Use Verbatim +R DL's at Burn Speed: 2.4x

Success: 100% for 7 Tries.

burner: pioneer 111d (1.23 original and 1.29 updated firmware)
media: memorex 10 pack red package on sale at 20$canadian 2$/ea.
Disc ID: RITEK-D01-01
burner app: imgburn
in my opinion pioneer and imgburn are pretty good burning material no problem so far

burned 33 backups all fully working and no errors so far on the working dvd's
failed only 2 backups with a laser position error but i think it was me making to much vibration around the computer (i also had 5 other failed backups but for other reasons then media brand sad.gif )
so 2 or 3 failed out of 40 thats good... and for reliability if kept in good condition i think there will be no problem !

media is carefully stored in 10 pack tower when not in use and everything has been really fine
I use those to keep the original in perfect condition to do another backup if needed but NEVER have i reburned a game cause the backup media was not working anymore !
bought 4 pack of 10 memorex on special at 20$ each pack on bestbuy.ca site (still on sale)
and next time i will try the fujifilm there 20$ canadian for a 15 pack on sale at futureshop.ca biggrin.gif 1.5$/ea. pretty nice deal

just my 2 cents:
even if 1 or 2 backups fail out of a lot its way less iritating when you pay 1.5 dollars each coasters instead of 3$ or more that verbatim costs and theyre as as good for me so far
search for any deal on something other than bogus names brand dvd+r dl's and youll be very happy

So RICOH DVD+R DL 8X works fine burned with 111D @2.4x

I also burned a backup of my RainbowSix Vegas on a DVD-R DL from Verbatim on a LG GSA-E10L although it is strange since there are no reports of working DVD-R DL Backups it is working!! (actually it loads perfectly I loaded the first mission but I havent had time to play it more).

So does this mean that DVD-R DL disks work or is the game going to fail after a few levels (after passing the layer break)?? I don't know I posted a new thread asking some more experienced than me for an explanation. Lets hope someone will clarify it.

I have a Samsung ms28 and the disk was burned with imgburn 2.4x speed.

Burner = Lite-On 1673S (JS0D firmware, newest)
Burned @ 2.4x (next time im going to try 4x, read below)
Burning App = ImgBurn v2.3.0.0
XBox360 DVD-ROM Drive = Samsung MS28 with xtreme 5.2A firmware
Media = Verbatim 2.4x/6x rated media (media code "MKM 001" , made in singapore) bought from newegg.com
ETC

so far only backed up 1 game but it works good "so far" as the xbox360 appears to have no problems reading it from listening to the drive etc.

p.s. game seems to work good and "so far" the xbox360 dont have problems reading the disc but i ran a "disc quality check" with Kprobe on my lite-on 1673S burner (which is a good burner to test quality of a disc on) and the PIE errors where good til near the end of the disc then they peaked out at about 428 which i heard 280 is general max you want... and my PIF's are within safe/good ranges (3 or less at any spike in the test) though and i heard those are more important than the PIE's errors... so i guess ill just have to throughly play the game and hopefully once it gets to late into the disc the reading will be good but if i do have problems it's going to be late in the second layer since the first layer was flawless basically.

so until i test this section out i cant say the game works 100percent but as of now it appears good.

also, from reading the forums over at club.cdfreaks.com (there basically experts in burning cd/dvd media in general) it appears that with my drive ill get noticeably better burns @ 4x from looking at disc quality scans in there forums on the same drive/media as me.... so my next game backup im going to burn @ 4x and see what happends wink.gif

just posted this cause im sure some people will want to know this info wink.gif

ok i just wanted to update my post above... if you got a lite-on 1673S dvd burner with JS0D firmware and u got verbatim 2.4/6x rated ones from newegg.com's website, BURN your backup discs @ 4x. the quality is much better that way and i know this cause the xbox360 seems to read them better (not as much clicking noises etc comming from the drive, it seems much quiter reading a 4x burned disc) plus i did a disc quality check on them and the PIE's are in MUCH better/safer ranges now... i basically get pretty much perfect burns @ 4x burn speeds on those discs (dvd+r dl's)

App imgburn

Speed 4x working

at first i didnt know about the quality of the discs everything else vs. verbatim  so i bought a 25 pack of memorex dvd+r dl. that was a big mistake  mad.gif

they burned at a slow 2.4x max and worked at first but after a few boot attempts all 3 discs started to be hit and miss with putting a game in resulting in either it playing with no problem or refusing to start with a dirty disk error.

I picked up a spindle of verbatim's and so far so good, no problems  biggrin.gif

G12345567 you didn't specify how many coaster you have made. I just recently changed pc rom drives so I will go ahead and post both setups.

Xbox 360 Drive: lite-on
Burner: sh-s182d (slave)
Reader: gdr8164b(lg) (master)
App: IMG Burn
Media: Verbatim DVD+R DL 8x
Speed: 2.4x
Games: 9
Coaster: 4

I believe my burner was the problem so I bought a pioneer 116d. So far..

Xbox 360 Drive: lite-on
Burner: pioneer 116d (slave)
Reader: gdr8164b(lg) (master)
App: IMG Burn
Media: Verbatim DVD+R DL 8x
Speed: 2.4x
Games: 1
Coaster: 0

Only time will tell whether I have a winning setup now.

Xbox 360 Drive: Samsung f/w MS28
Burner: TS_H625L f/w SC01
Reader: Samsung f/w ms28
App: XBC or IMG Burn
Media: Memorex DVD+R DL 8x
Speed: 6x
Games: 1
Coaster: 2

The first set of memorex I picked up 10 were coasters 5 were good, but this could have been because I was testing the burner with different firmware updates.

With the new settings one game would not complete while using XBC to burn the game. When I changed to IMG burn it went through fine, but a different game wouldn't finish with IMG burn so I had to use XBC.

Hope this information helps someone.

DVD firmware: iXtreme 1.6 for Samsung-Toshiba ms28
Burner: LG
Program: CloneCD
Media: Memorex 2.4x DVD+R DL
Method: Burn ISO
Speed 2.4x

and

DVD firmware: iXtreme 1.6 for BenQ
Burner: LG
Program: CloneCD
Media: Memorex 2.4x DVD+R DL
Method: Burn ISO
Speed: 2.4x

I was surprised to see that after reading on these forums and everyone saying that Memorex are bad, I got no coasters on anyone of my burns.
