You are burning your backups incorrectly.

Need dual-layer discs with bitsetting to DVD-ROM.

Also make sure SS is done properly.

Most people have success with the Pioneer 111d and Verbatim DLs. The pioneer auto bitsets dvd+r dl to dvd-rom automatically. Newegg has them for 32.99 for the black one.
