Title: Xbox 360 On A Samsung Plasma 50"?
Post by: GetLoose on May 17, 2006, 08:56:00 PM
I am looking to buy a new TV and noticed the Samsung 50" Plasma HDTV (HP-S5053) at Best Buy today for $3499.99. The TV looks great. But Ive heard about Plasmas in the past about the screen burn in and stuff like that. My question is should I go with a LCD or a Plasma? The guy at Best Buy said that I shouldnt have a screen burn in problem unless I leave a certain image on the screen for 4 hours. He said from time to time I should change the channel so nothing happens. But of course If im playing something live who the hell wants to change the channel for a sec. Anyway im looking to get something in the 50" range 42" and lower is to small for my room. Thanks!

Personally, I'd go with a Bigscreen-style TV if you can fit it.  Or a DLP, as DLPs are not TOO deep.  They will be less expensive, DLPs don't suffer from burn in and support the BEST picture at any resolution with the darkest blacks.  So, instead of looking great at one resolution like a plasma, they will look good at 480i, 480p, 720i (never seen 720i actually used), 720p, 1080i, and 1080p.  I don;t even know if most plasmas support 1080p.
For now, for the price, and for the future, I'd go with DLP.  1080p is coming, and you want a set that can support it well.

So your saying I should go with something like the Sony SXRD Projection TV? It supports 1080p but the only thing I dont like about it is that its not as thin as a plasma and the tv isnt clear if you are looking at it from the side. You have to be at eye level directly in front of it to get a great picture.

I have the 50 inch Sony SXRD. I got it the first week it was available last year. It is easily the best picture I have ever seen anywhere, end of story. The only downside is that though it shows 1080p it, as with 99% of 1080p TVs, cannot receive a 1080p signal. This is not just because there is no broadcast in 1080p, but because there is not a universal 1080p out. HDMI does not cover 1080p. One company, I think Magnavox ( i may be wrong) uses some kind of PC connnection to achieve it. Bottom line, 1080i channels get converted to 1080p on the Sony SXRD, and very well I should say. Discover HD Theater looks better than real life, I kid you not.

On the downside, the 360 does not have the current best possible connection. Component inputs simply become blurry when blown up to a large TV like this. The effect isn't so noticable on slower pace games, but when motion blur is added (PGR3) it can look a little hazy. If you can, go for the SXRD, the price has dropped since I bought mine. You can now get the 60 for what I paid for a 50. When I bought mine the 70 was $15,000, but I don't know what it currently goes for.

You might want to learn how hdtv's work before spreading flase information.  a DLP set will have only one native resolution just like a plasma.

Uh, no. I had a sweet 62" Toshiba that sucked ass compared to the 60" SXRD I got in Feb for $3,499 (my CC mispriced it, I got it for the cost of the 50"). It blows away the other TV's I have here (LCD and Plasma). The HD channels are so clear you'd sware you're looking through a "Windex'd" window. 360 looks amazing too.

SXRD if you can.

Hey Vasher, I have the 50 inch of your TV. I actually find the HD channels to lcok noticably better than the Xbox 360. I think this may be due to the component connection. Do you find the 360 games to be a little blurrry at times?

360 looks great, never blurry. Play with your settings (tv and 360).

I have a Pioneer 50 inch plasma that I primarily view at 720p, and I love it for games. I have never had a burn in problem. But, it also has some kind of anti burn in technology built in. Exactly what it is I don't know. But it even has a picture setting called Games by default. I dont play Mame on it though, I know that those type of games are the worst. As long as your carefull and dont leave it on the same screen for hours on end you should be fine. Most games now days have enough cut scenes and what not that heads up displays and such aren't really that big of deal.  And OMG the picture is soo sexy.. I would never go with any kind of projection screen tv. For exactly the same reasons you say about you can't even see it right unless you are right in front of it. My friend has one and I feel bad when I go over there. Because it looks like crap compared to my plasma. But hey to each his own.   Enjoy man..

I used to think that the rear projection TVs suck too, but this Sony is the real deal. It can be viewed from very wide. The only time the colors will look strange is if you lay on the floor right infront of it, but that would hurt your neck anyways.

Here is some more info on that Plasma from Samsung. It says it has this new auto pixel shift technology that sounds pretty good. And circuit city is offering no interest and no payments till 2008 which is pretty dam good too. Maybe I should just go ahead and get the freaking thing, you only live once.

 Samsung 50" Plasma HDTV (HP-S5053)
SAM   HPS5053
• 50" plasma screen
• 720p resolution
• Built-in HD tuner  • Widescreen
• Widescreen
• 2 HDMI inputs

Durability: No need to worry that your Samsung plasma screen will easily wear out. Auto pixel shift (burn in resistance) helps prevent static screen pictures from becoming burned into the screen, while the TV offers a long-lasting 60,000 hour panel life.

 Price: $3499.99

Yeah.  I'm sorry, I admit I was wrong and confusing some of the factors of CRTs with DLPs.
I still believe that a DLP will be the best bet for you, though, but don't know of any in particular that I could recommend.

I have a 42" LCD Samsung and it works great. I use it as my tv and computer monitor to save space because i am a college student. I think its great and i paid about 3000 for mine. You might look into the LCDs because i've been told by a few buddies that the plasmas burn in. they've been in the business awhile but maybe they are fool of it, just thought i'd see if i could help. Best of luck bro....

All of what you said is why ive held off from buying a new one.  So many technologies that are evolving so fast.  I'll get a DLP but only when it "gets there" (I see rainbows on all of the old ones).  LCD and Plasma just suck IMO.

LCoS is sick but I dont have the wallet for it right now.  I started saving last year so next year I'll be able to drop 3,000 on a tv.  Hope its enough LOL.

3grand can defenitly get you an Lcos SXRD.  Honestly this summer is going to be interesting.  Right now the 50" SXRD can be had in most retail store for what 3,400?  I know if you look online enough (maybe choose a slightly lesser warranty) you can get one right now.  This summer with the new line coming they will be trying to move the older model out the door for drastically reduced prices if 1080p HDMI is not to important to you.  Also there are alot of people that think the 55" might come out at the same price as the current 50" or some believe less....I hope so.  So I would not count Lcos out of your choice just yet.  And the Lcos I believe will be there this summer with the LED design instead of your convential Lamp and Color Wheel design...but thats just speculation till we can see one.

Really I wish I could wait till the dust settles myself BUT I simply can't stand waiting any longer and decided that  this summer is decision time.
