i have my 360 hooked up via hdmi. every now and then when playing a game or a movie, the sound will go out for 1 or 2 seconds  and come back fine. sometimes, watching a dvd movie(never a game), the sound  will go out intermittently very often, and the video will skip or not play at all. as soon as i hook up a new cable everything's fine. no i thought it might be a cable problem but a. these aren't cheapo cables, they're $95 bestbuy cables, and b. my cable box is also on hdmi and the video never skips, but evey now and then, the audio will. btw, the component on the 360 works perfectly fine. anyone else have this probelm or any suggestions? thanks in advance.

First - you wasted your money on $95 cables, since HDMI is HDMI, there's absolutely no difference in quality fro money cable to another. You can try another cable, get the cheapest one you can find if you want to go that route. It could be the input on your TV/stereo as well, or it could be a problem with your 360, it's not that rare for people to have this problem.

that would be the perfect if i had asked if people thought i paid too much for my cables, but i didn't. also, the cables were $35 a piece but they are the ones sold in best buy for $90, guess i wasn't clear on that. anyway, let's see if i can simplify. i have 2 hdmi cables, a and b. they are both the same make, but a is 1.2 and b is 1.3. they are hooked to a samsung 5042 if that helps. cable a goes to my 360 and goes to my cable box. when i watch various  dvd's (not every one), the sound will go out every 5 minutes or so for like 2 seconds. two dvds i own, the sound "skips" every 20 seconds or so. when playing games on disc the sound again "skips" every 5 minutes or so. never the video though on anything. also worth noting, when playing divx or 264 files via an sd card never cause the skip. when i hook cable b to my 360, the skipping on EVERYTHING is reduced to every 15-20 minutes. again the sd card causes nothing. when cable b is hooked to the cable box, the sound skipping is 2 seconds every two to three hours. hopefully this helps a little more. is there a solution? does this happen to you? any and all help is appreciated. thanks.

I had a similar problem with my HDMI.. if I played for more than an hour or so my audio would go out and stay out until I reset the TV.

That happened for about the last month or two.  Then out of the blue I got an E-74 error.

My further question would be, how do I bypass the HDMI cord for audio to the 360 and other components?  I don't know too much about Dolby, but it seems like you can just hook up a surround sound system and that takes over the HDMI audio?  Is that accurate?

MS has a dongle that comes packaged with the elite, but im sure it can be had seperatly, it connects into the AV port of the xbox 360, While still using the HDMI for Video, it offers Optical and RCA Left/Right connections
