It will work, but it won't be true 5.1 surround sound. If your sounds card has S/PDIF-in then I would use that instead. You can get a TOSLink cable off eBay for about $0.99

Thanks for the reply... here is my soundcard's control panel;

The rear of my subwoofer;

my 5 speakers plug in to the row where you can see the purple input above. The only other free input on the subwoofer is "Diag Out" for diasnostic purposes, as the manual says, but then next to that, it has an LED labelled "S/P DIF Indicator"?

the only inputs free on it are line in (blue), then the midi/joystick port at the far end...
