Title: When Xbox360 Is On, Tv Says 'no Signal'
Post by: moederfietser on April 10, 2007, 05:43:00 AM
Hi all,

Yesterday I turned on my 360 for a game of Fight Night Round 3. The dashboard was looking normal, I put the game in the DVD drive, everything was normal untill I had to fight. Everything was blurry and the colors weren't displayed correctly. I quitted the game and went back to the dashboard, which was also blurry and the colors weren't displayed correctly too. I turned it off and back on, but this time my TV simply said: 'no signal'. I still hear the startup sound, I still hear the sound of switching blades or selecting something. Everything works, except for the video. I don't get a red Ring of Light, just normal green. I tried my 360 on different TV's, component and s-video, HDTV and normal TV, but nothing works. Is the graphics card dead or is it something simpler? I don't have warranty left, so shipping back to Microsoft is not an option.

For your info: the 360 is opened before (no warranty), but the only thing changed inside the system is that I installed heatsinks on the memory chips. I did this a year ago, so I don't think that is the problem. Except for that the 360 isn't modified in any way.

Help please?  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/uhh.gif)

Simple question, but do you have a friends cable you can try?

well if he tried S-Video and component then it sounds like he's already tried differen't cables.

If you haven't I'd say try playing with the HDTV switch... failing that it's probably the ANA scaler chip...

...Moving to AV Technical.

No, I mean, on the component cable you also have that yellow connector (thought it was called sS-Video but probably wrong..) for non-HD use. Meaning, the same cable, but different connector.

Yellow is composite, afaik there isn't an S-video cable for the 360, i could be wrong though.

That was the name yes. Tried that one with the same cable, didn't work. Playing with the HD/non-HD switch doesn't help. Tomorrow I get a new cable to try with.

Keep you posted...

OK, after some time waiting I finally got to borrow my friends cable. It is the non-HD cable that is supplied with the Core package. I plugged it in, turned on my Xbox and, wow, a signal. Still blurry as described in the startpost, but hey, a beginning. The Xbox automatically started playing the movie that was still in the DVD tray, so I pressed the Guide button and the yellow Y button to return to the dashboard, but then the screen became distorted. I had to turn off the console because the dashboard wasn't visible, and after repowering the console back on I got the annoying 'No Signal' screen again. Fiddled some time with my cable and my friend's cable, but I didn't get a signal again.

Conclusion, console broken? Or is this fixable? I am willing to take my Xbox apart to look for 'clues' on which hardware part failed. Help is greatly appreciated as I am getting bored as hell...

Tried the Y-button and the right trigger trick described in this thread but didn't work for me. Is there anything I can do to make it easier for you guys to check what the problem is?

I have the same problem.  I went to best buy and got new component video cables and that seemed to resolve it temporarily.  What erks me is the no signal, not supported mode is random.  I peformed a reset and now I only get the no signal.  Sux, cause my warranty expired and xbox wants to charge me to fix it.  I'm pissed, rather then sending it back to xbox i'd just assume buy a new console.  Here's the thing though, there is no reason why this couldn't occur again and xbox's support staff really have no clue as to what is causing it and how to resolve it.  I call this a defect that microsoft needs to handle.  I don't want to make a scene I just want my xbox back.  Any ideas?

This just happened to me...

No signal.

GRR i would rather it be an error message or something.

Also when I try to connect a controller I don't get anything either. It's like the console is on but frozen immediately or something?

The same happened to me just before my 360 died.  If the console was cool and I turned it on it would work fine for a few games of something and then would freeze. Turned off then back on and I would get no signal on tv.
Sometimes when booted from cool and I went to the display settings to change from pal 50 to pal 60 the screen would go all fuzzy and would not settle down (my tv does support pal 60).  After a few days of this the 360 red lighted and would not turn on again. Sent to MS for replacemnet.

To get this covered under the new 36 month warranty, I have to cause the RROD (red ring of death)... Does anybody know how to cause your console to permanently display the RROD without opening the case so I can send this b*tch back to MICROSOFT??

Here's my situation-

I was playing BIOSHOCK and while playing, the colors in the game got distorted, and some of the objects in the game displayed some artifacting, and some of the solid objects became semi-transparent.  I quickly saved my game and shut off my console.
When I turned it back on, everything looked normal (console powered on, and controller connected wirelessly- no RROD) except there was no audio or video out.
After troubleshooting on multiple tvs with multiple sets of cables (SDTV/HDTV- component & VGA) Still no audio or video output......

I called M$, and even though this is my second console, and it was shipped to me from M$ a little over a year ago, the factory WARRANTY did not restart with the new console, it just kept on ticking from the date that I bought my first xbox360 on.... Not only that... The new extended 36 month warranty ONLY covers the RED RING OF DEATH....

I need to cause my console to display the RROD

Guess what I did. After trying every option I called Microsoft Support Centre and explained my problem and said that I had removed my warranty sticker. The guy on the phone answered to me that the technicians don't look too good if the warranty is voided. They would come get my Xbox360 and if they would find out that I voided my warranty I would get a call and it would cost me 75 euro (around 100 dollars I think) without taxes for the repair. I got no phonecall and after 1,5 week I got a brand new (!!!) xbox with a manufacturing date of september 2007, a Ghost Recon faceplate and a 20GB hard disc drive! So thanks Microsoft!

Moederfietser, you are very lucky :-P To the rest of you who haven't been eating lucky charms constantly, what I did to fix my box is as follows:

1st: The box was old... so I put in "the darkness" and used it to update the dash. I did this using the sound and guessing... At some point if it's asking if you want to update the dash, you will have only 2 options, which you can tell by listening as you press up and down on the d-pad.

This fixed the issue for a while, but alas... it was not permanent.

2nd: I used rubbing alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the mobo [it has a strange residue on it, I'm assuming the previous owner spilt some energy drink on it...]

3rd: Purchased and installed the X-clamp fix which was ridiculously easy..

4th: Powered on console, powered down again and let sit for a fair while, booted up again and it was working perfectly and has been since. Good luck!

yup same thing happened to me today! was only using the xbox for watching movies through my external harddrive and the colors went kind of greyscale in the movie! when i went back to the dashboard it was the same as the movie. so I shut it off and back on again but I recieved a no signal/mode not supported every time i tried to start it up. I really hope by leaving it running i will get rrod or i am screwed as the warrenty is expired! if anyone figures this out please email me the fix! Thx

I like to suggest you all, that video problem can be fix by heated treaded and X-clamp removed.
I had repaired several console with no video signal successfully.
Strip off heat sink from MOB, clean up. Reflow heat gun, especially HANA and GPC area and video connector area. Top and buttom. Warring, let MOB to cool down before you flip.
Use 2x1mm washer between MOB and heatsink.
There is alot of tutorial for that.
You will be happy after you did that.

Same thing just happened to me last night! Blurry dim colors right in the middle of a game, then it went grayscale. I turned off the console and when I turned it back on - no signal.  sad.gif  No audio, no video. Please someone help. I was using standard A/V cables. Can this be fixed?

HEY THERE i got a fix for you!

the same shit happened to me, EXACTLY THE SAME DUDE (i tried fkin everything, even the Y + RT trick, with no results). I called microsoft and they said my video card was ruined. SO i said no thanks to the 140$ fix and thought to get a red ring of death so i would be covered by warranty (not a good idea). my last hope was gone and I said to myself... LET'S DO IT

so i put it in my BIG winter blanket so it could overheat. i did that for 25 minutes (without hard drive or DVD) and waited until it was pretty hot.

then i waited 10 minutes to cool a bit

Then i plugged it in, and my xbox ventilators were going crazy because of all the previous heat. i had to resync my controller 3 times (i don't know why, maybe part of the fix, who knows) until my tv got FINALLY the signal

BUT it was all weird and looking the same as before it went off (like green stuff everywhere and blurry i dont know), so i got to display settings, and put my xbox in "best settings for my tv" and thant in "1080P" mode (even if my tv is 720P)  and my tv got reset at the same time as my xbox and everything worked like before!!! ohmy.gif

i don't know if I went lucky or it's a real fix but... it WORKED!!!

what do you have to lose? i had 140$ to lose, so i did it. but if you are covered, don't try it.

PS: i will test if its a permanent fix, and give news about it.

ok here is the update. it worked for like 3 days... but now its all screwed up again... but luckily I forgot  that i had 1 more year xbox warranty with visa biggrin.gif . ha i'm so lucky after all...

conclusion: towel trick works... but only for a short period of time...
