I just noticed this, too. Fullscreen DVDs get black bars on the side, but my widescreen DVDs still get black bars on the top and bottom. I'm guessing something to do with the AR (either not getting it correctly, or it just doesn't do any adjusting beyond 4:3 and 16:9 playback settings).
