Ok, why are you using a VGA cable for your "tv"? Why not use the cable supplied with your system. A vga cable is used for a computer monitor. Im sure your tv may come with a vga input. Your tv, if a hdtv, may only output a 720p res. If you use the HD cable for the 360, you can set the 360 to output 720p.
My Tv can handle 1360x768 and that is the resolution I want to run, it's that simple. VGA is much better than component by the way.

on my Dell widescreen monitor the 360 says its doing 1360x768 but the monitor says 1280x768
