Title: Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound Headphones
Post by: Foe-hammer on March 03, 2006, 02:51:00 AM
Well i've been looking into a good and reasonably priced pair of dolby 5.1 headphones ($150, or under), and this is what i've came up with:

1) The best ones i've found under $100 are the Creative Labs HQ2300D Dolby 5.1 Headphones.  The only problem is they are not available in the US, but only in the UK.  I've tried getting them from amazon.co.uk and other UK based sites, but they will not ship to the US. sad.gif  sad.gif

2) Another one is the Thrustmaster T510 Dolby 5.1 headphones.  These can be purchased for about $125, but the actual headphones are cheap.

3) Third is the LTB AC-3 dolby 5.1 Headphones.  These give good sound like the Thrustmaster, but the actual headphones are also cheaply made.

4) Another is the Turtle Beach Ear Force AXT surround sound headphones .  This is an awesome set of headphones that has quality made headphones, and xblive mic built in. The only problem is it does not come with a dolby decoder, and thereby does not support dolby 5.1 true surround sound, but just "enhanced stereo". Blah, so close! They were planning on make a DXT set that had everything of the AXT, but with a dolby decoder, but nothing never came about of it.

Anyone else with information on other dolby 5.1 headphones is much appreciated.

I saw the discussion in the other thread and started looking myself. I went ahead and ordered the Thrustmaster from Walmart. I'll let you know how they are. They may actually arrive today.

Ign reviewed this and gave a good rating. They said its not perfect but works really well. An review on Amazon also said the sound was great - they complained about what I considered minor things.

In the end, I went with this one because I could get it from Walmart. If it sucks, it makes for easy returns. I'll try to post a review later next week once I get some time. I'll get initial impressions up ASAP.

Here's the link to the Ign review.

From the review:

QUOTE
Conclusion
The (big breath) Thrustmaster T510 Dolby Digital 5.1 Decoder + Dolby Headphone (whew) is an excellent product with a few big flaws that may be deal breakers for some. Those flaws are avoidable though, and the system sounds so good that we can't help but give it high marks. The simulated but entirely realistic sounding surround mix is so good it hurts. Honestly, truly, once you hear what it can sound like, you'll never be content with a standard stereo mix again.

Yo, I got the Creative ones.  They're OK, comfortable to wear and sound alright for the price (not tried any others though).  They've helped with Call Of Duty 2 smile.gif

Only problem is I keep forgetting to take the batteries out or turn it off when I've finished a session.  I'm going through batteries like nobodys business.  You'd have thought they'd have put some kind of auto-off feature on em.

I'm in the UK BTW...

The unit is corded, not wireless, right?

Can you not just keep it plugged in and not worry about having to recharge the batteries?

Can it recharge the batteries for you?

Hey man,

I just replied to your PM but for anyone else who might be interested, it takes 2 X AA batteries and it doesn't charge itself or come with (or facilitate) a wall wart.  You have a switch on the side for power.  If you forget and leave it on overnight it's bye bye batteries sad.gif

Hope that helps.

The Thrustmaster came today. I love it so far.

The sound is great. I haven't invested in surround sound system because of my current room setup and the fact I'll be moving in the near future. This is best I've heard my games ever. The surround sound effects are great.

Headphones are comfortable. The volume control is a bit sensitive. I thought I had a defective unit first because the sound kept going off when I adjusted the volume. Finally I realized it was just turned down all the way. The dial itself is unusual. But I'm already used to it so its not a problem.

Battery life sucks with the reachargeables they give you. But you can keep the power cord plugged in while you play and I have a outlet close by so again, not a problem for me.

I absolutely love these things. I would forget I was even wearing headphones for awhile and it felt like the room was filled with the sound. I would highly recommend these.

One note: I am by no means an expert on sound quality. I could never pick up on the subtle differences between systems. So far me its great, but there's a chance someone who is a real audiophile could pick up other issues.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.

I just ordered these:

(IMG:http://dvdbcko.dvdcritiques.com/upload/news/917/File2.jpg)

Thanks to Ozy, a member here on these boards, he found me a UK site that would ship worldwide.  With shipping and everything it came to 60 pounds.....roughly $105.

Thanks again, Ozy  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

These were the only surround sound headphones of the bunch that supported DTS, as well.

Just in time for oblivions!

And they do not have the option of an AC adapter, just two AA batteries.  I had a good recharger, so that was not a problem for me.

I also went ahead and purchased some better headphones:

The creative ones that come with it are not bad, but not nearly as good as the ones above.

I would have gotten these if i was aware of them at the time:

(IMG:http://www.avland.co.uk/pioneer/sedir800c/sedir800c.jpg)

The PIONEER SEDIR800C retail for around $350 to $400.  And while they are a lot more, the headphones are much better, they are wireless, have a better reciever/decoder, and are amped.

All together i have spent:

- $108: creative 2300D
- $94: sony mdr-v700 headphones
- $60: pocket amp*

Total: $262

* For games the creative decoder carries plenty of punch, and is more then enough loud, but for many movies it is not loud enough, so an amp is required.

It's not the headphones that need to support 5.1, it is the decoder with dolby headphone technology that produces the 5.1 surround in any kind of headphone.

Those look pretty good, except for the cans (actual headphones) head band is all plastic with no padding; very uncomfortable.

For around $100 the creative ones are your best bet.  The only problem with them is that the decoder unit does not accept a power pack, but only accepts 2AA batteries.

Also while sony uses dolby digital they do not use dolby surround headphone technology, but use their own surround headphone technology.  Dolby surround headphone technology is a must to have imo (they have invested more $ into it, and have been developing it longer then sony has).

Beware of the 'the graphics guy' website that was mentioned that sell the PIONEER SEDIR800C headphones.  They don't even let you know that the headphones are 'out of stock', and on 'backorder'.  But they will sure as hell take your order.  I've since ordered from a different place that had them in stock, and have tried to cancel my order from 'the graphics guy'.  Problem is i cannot get a hold of them by phone, so i've left many a message via phone and email over the last 5 days and they have not returned my messages or cancelled my order.  I was reading their return policy and they state that they only allow cancellations under 'rare' circumstances.  Well considering my order has been in the 'Pending' stages for the past 14 days, and they didn't mark it as out of stock or back order, they better cancel my order or i'll refute it with my credit card company. grr.gif

Update on the Sony MDR-700 headphones i bought.

They are horrible uncomfortable.  The do not fit around your entire outer ear,  but squish the hell out of them until you wish they'd fall off.  Not recommended for playing video games or watching movies; activities that have you wearing them for over an hour period of time.

Well i finally got through to them on the phone after the 10th call and message left, and all it was was one big pissing match.  The guys at 'thegraficsguy' are complete assholes.  The dude i was talking to yelled at me the whole time, while calling me a liar and a few cuss words.  I couldn't even get a word in with all his yelling, and then he hung up.  I immediately called him back and told him, before he could go off again, that i would call my CC company and tell them that any charges by them was not authorized by me, and that i would refute it.  I then told him at that point that he could then shove the headphones up his ass, and enjoy them all day long. grr.gif  Fun, fun.

About an hour later i recieved an email stating that my order had been cancelled as of my request.  Must have got through to him. laugh.gif

On a lighter note, my pioneer headphones will arrive this wednesday from another place who actually had them in stock for $295 shipped. beerchug.gif

Well i just got the creatives in today and i absolutely love them.  My parents have a 5.1 in the den that ive used for movies but im not really experienced with the top of the line systems.  I just have to say i really like the phones and for the price they are perfect! the sound is very  big and open and doesnt sound bottlenecked into your ear like stereo headphones.  it has the option to switch between analog and digital sound and there is a very distinct difference.

i find the actual headphone really comfortable and cable very long but not too long.  i also managed to pick up some energizer 2500 mAh rechargables at traget for $20(4 batteries and a charger).  i appreciate hammer for gettin the thread started and helpin me go the right router with picking headphones.  and also everyone else who help me in pm's.  thanks a lot guys and feel free to pm me if you have any questions!

beerchug.gif Glad to hear you are happy with them.

I recieved my Pioneer SE-DIR800 headphones yesterday, and am not overly thrilled with them.  My creative unit and headphones produced a better, richer, sound for a third of the cost.  I hoping that once the headphones have time to 'brake in', that they will open up more and sound less 'tingy'.

My biggest gripes with them are:

1) as mentioned, they sound 'tingy' compared to the creative headphones.

2) Not loud enough.  Also when the volume is maxed, there is a slight hissing that accompanies it.

3) Cannot use my pocket amp with the cordless headphones to give it more 'umph'.

Pluses:

1) Cordless

2) Headphones are better built and more comfortable then the creative headphones (although currently the sound is not as good as what i get with the creative headphones).

The grass always seems greener on the other side. sad.gif

The Pioneer SE-DIR800 are closed type cans, and they work great.  The surround signal will carry just fine when amped.  That is actually how i had my set up initially when i was using wired headphones.  Whether it is amped before the decoder, or after, it makes no difference.

And so was I. wink.gif

The creative decoder (i had both the creative and Pioneer decoder) is just as good as the Pioneer decoder.  The reason i brought up the Pioneer is because its cans are closed, and that having closed type cans would be the same on the creative decoder.  The difference of closed vs semi-closed type cans on the creative decoder is the same difference as it would be on any type of system, whether it was stereo or what not; it's a matter of preference.

And when i was using the creative decoder (sold it to my bro), i used an amp with it.  But regardless of decoder, amping it will not negatively affect the 5.1 surround processing.

Very useful topic.  I've been eying over surround sound headphones for a while now.  I recall hearing about Creative's offering, but forgot about it.  Got the Gigaworks S750 and the matching decoder from them and couldn't be happier with their quality when it comes to audio equipment that goes beyond the computer.  Sounds like this will be a perfect thing to use in my new apartment, and portable so It'll be easy to use in bedroom and living room.  Might get wireless headphones later on to go with it if I feel the need.

Hey, beowulfx, "nice to see you again, Macleod".

The creatives are every bit as good as the wireless pioneers, in terms of sound quality.  But i must stay, that having it be wireless is very nice.

Just what i said.  Sony does not have 'Dolby Headphone' technology, but have their own headphone technology that is not as good.  'Dolby Headphone' is different and independent from 'Dolby Digital 5.1'.  And just because a device can decode Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 does not have anything to do with how their headphones handle the info to produce a convincing 5.1 effect in a pair of headphones.

The Sony MDR-DS1000 do not have the bottom Dolby headphone option, like this picture of the creative decoder has.

(IMG:http://www.trustedreviews.com/images/article/inline/2387-1269.jpg)

If it does not have the 'Dolby Headphone' option, then do not get it.

but what is dolby headphone? what`s the difference between dolby headphone and dolby digital? cause most movies and games use dolby digital. if a movie uses dolby digital, that`s what I`ll hear in the headphones, not dolby headphone. or am I wrong?

'Dolby Headphone' is turned on along with 'Dolby Digital', or 'DTS'.

'Dolby Digital' 5.1 and 'DTS' 5.1 only seperates the channels into 5.1 directions.  They do not, and cannot create the 5.1 experience within a pair of normal headphones (of which is only two speakers).  'Dolby Headphone' technology creates this 5.1 experience, and makes it possible with a pair of normal headphones.  Sony uses their own 5.1 headphone technology to create this experience.

If this still does not make sense, do some research on the subject before you ask any more questions here.

Hello

I am looking for a 5.1 Headphones as well, i have been looking for a few days on the net and reading Reviews, i was thinking at the start to go for the AX360 from Trintron, but since i am a quality lover, i want to go for the SE-DIR800C or SE-DIR2000C, Anyone know whats the diffreance between the models, becuase they are 150$ apart in price, and thats allot.

Another question is How is the creative 2300D compared to the SE-DIR Series?

I have tried the AXT referred to above - not bad, but very hissy at very low volumes, and I understand it is only a simulated surround sound field through the multiple speakers (unless it is actually decoding the Dolby Stereo Surround (ie. Prologic) that the Xbox 360 puts out? if that's what the dashboard means by 'Dolby Stereo').

I wonder why Dolby Headphone isn't more popular - I've only read of a few DVDs being released with a Dolby Headphone soundtrack, and despite talk of the format for consoles it doesn't seem to have eventuated.

I can't find the HQ-2300d or the Thrustmaster T510 available in the US, UK or Australia (where it was only released last year but now disappeared)! And no alternatives apart from either uber-crappy or uber-expensive options - and if the Creative and Thrustmaster is Dolby Certified that's all I need. Any supplier tips?

BTW links like this suggest Dolby Headphone is better than 5.1 headphones with multiple speakers: http://www.behardware.com/articles/497-8/5...ative-test.html

So, I am keen to try out the Dolby Headphone format if I can find an option that's available, and shippable to Australia (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Regards,
Bruce

That link provided some good info on 5.1 headphones.

So make sure that the headphones you get support DD (DTS is also a plus for movies), and Dolby Headphone tech.  The ones that just have the multiple speakers in the headphones do not work so well, of which do not support Dolby Headphone tech.

With that said, the two best current options are the Pioneers and the Creatives.  But it sounds like the creatives are not available anymore.

I just wish someone would make a DD, Dolby Headphone tech wireless headphones with xbl mic attached.

There's another good pair of DD 5.1 headphones, called: Tritton: AX360.  They have xbl mic attached to them.  The only real problem is they do not support Dolby Headphone tech.  But a lot of review say they work very well.  I'm very temped to buy them to test them out.  I love my wireless Pioneers, but it is rather cumbersome hanging the 360 mic around my neck to use on xbl.

i have some cheapies from a local store 30$ but they work wonderfully, so i would imagine anything more expensive esp name brand would just blow you away

since stereo is so easy to produce, try to get some with a deep bass which mine have but no thumping power

This thread is about 5.1 headphones, not any regular stereo headphones.

UPDATE...

JVC SUDH1 DD, DTS Dolby Headphone Receiver

(IMG:http://www.compsource.com/MSCS_IMAGES/HD/LARGE/SUDH1.JPG)

These are pretty much the same thing as the Creative Portable receiver.  They are portable, only power source is 2 AA batteries and no power cord input - which sucks.  But adding a power source to the batter inputs via a variable power adapter is a very easy mod that i did with my creative portable receiver.  They are also relatively cheap at around $90.  They comes with no headphones, but that is really no problem, considering the headphones that come with 5.1 dolby headphone receivers are generally garbage.  The cool thing about these receiver that have the 'Dolby Headphone Technology', is any regular two speaker headphones will work.  So do yourself a favor and get a pair of good wired headphones, along with a portable amp, and you'll have one kick ass 5.1 sounding headphone system!

Also my wireless Pioneer 800c headphones just broke for no reason.  I was just removing them from my head when the left can just broke off at the connection point right above where it rotates.  Upon further inspection, after taking them apart, the can is only held together by a very small 'U' shaped piece of plastic.  That is what broke on me.  Very cheap.  Truth be told, while the pioneer wireless headphones were adequate, they suck to a good pair of wired headphones.

I'd recommend the Beyerdynamic DT-770/80 headphones for the best sounding experience for games and movies for under $500.  A beautiful set of headphones that has great sound quality with the most bass in any headphones.  They are extremely robust/durable with steel can connections.  And they are THE most comfortable headphones to wear with pillow like muffs for the cans.  Great for long gaming seasons. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) These headphones are priced very reasonably at $200.  I'll write a full review on them when get mine in.

I just found another contender for 5.1 headphone gaming.

http://www.astrogaming.com/equipment/index/ct/3/id/3

These seem to be the best all around gaming 5.1 headphones.  They support Dolby Headphone Tech, and come with a very reliable/usable mic.  They are also made by the people who desinged/made the xbox360 (not sure if that is such a good thing - RROD... lol!)

Plus:

+ Dolby Headphone Technology for 5.1 surround sound
+ Very functional xbox live mic that seems to work much better then the Trittons.
+ Amplified more then norm
+ Made by the people who designed/made the xbox360
+ Made by the people who design/make Alienware computers
+ Made particularly for MLG pro players

Minus:

- No DTS support for watching movies

Questions:

- Quality of wired headphones compared to quality $200 wired headphones?

Nevermind found answer. Now just have to decide between x41 and the a40.

The jvc can be found on eBay for relatively cheap.  I picked mine up for under 50 new.  Sound good with my senn 580's.  Not as good as my 5.1 but a Lot more late night friendly
