Title: Sony 24" Gdm-fw900 Crt Monitor
Post by: the_iLLmatic_one on January 22, 2006, 09:10:00 PM
I plan on getting this monitor soon. its a FD Trinitron wide-screen professional crt monitor with a 16:10 aspect ratio. its native resolution is 1920 x 1200 at 80 Hz. I was wondering since the 360 will force it to 60hz and me picking 1280x768 as my resolution, would the screen show funny or flicker? Any help would be great. thanks in advance. one

I just checked the specs on that monitor, and i just had to add that is one sweet monitor!

Are you buying it new or used?  How much, and where from?

I'd love to replace my 19" sony trinitron G420s flat crt's for one of those babies; 24" flat widescreen pc crt is to die for.

I just wanted to add that Sony's 24" CRT widescreen monitors are legendary. I'm glad I saw this thread because the monitor has been in the back of my head for a while; prices have dropped I see and at $470 or around that I'm going to look to get one myself.

It is the very best computer monitor ever made.

Well, it might be if you have never seen or used the legendary IBM T221.   A 22" widescreen LCD with a 3840x2400 resolution....Now THAT is the best monitor ever.   Do a quick google on the T221 and you'll see that I'm not the only person who thinks that.   I went to school for computer animation at AIPX, and was lucky enough to see and use one of these in once.   Words simply cannot describe the image it makes.

Sure, now a days its specs aren't THAT great.   But, its not meant for gaming like other monitors out there.   The FW900 would be great for that.   And actually, the FW900 is one of very few monitors out there whos pixel pitch is small enough that it can physically show ALL of the resolution of a 1080p image.   Many monitors can display a 1920x1080 image, but some of that image is lost in the pixel pitch.   But, with Sony's "Super Fine Pitch" screen on the FW900, you will actually be seeing the whole image.   Great monitor.

And, another side note to this thread.   There was also a HP version of this monitor that Sony made for them.   It was the A7217A.   Same exact monitor, just in a beige case.   But, more often than not, you can find it for a good deal cheaper than the Sony model.   If you want a great monitor, and a sexy silver/gray case, get the Sony.   But, if you just wan the great monitor, and don't need the sexy case colors, go for the HP.

Wow, that is an amazing LCD.

I still prefer CRT's for its black levels and color vibrance over an LCD, though.

Oh, for sure.   That IBM monitor is the farthest thing you can get from a "gaming" monitor.   Its meant for 3D, CAD, medical, and government uses.   It only has a 48hz refresh rate.   But HOLY HELL does it look great with Softimage or Maya running on it.

I also can't stand LCDs for gaming, or even general usage for that matter.   I have a Viewsonic P225fb-6 for my pc.   I love the looks and sexy cosmetics of the newer widescreen LCDs and what not.   But, you just can't beat the color gamut and smooth refresh rates of a sweet CRT.

All though the HP is the exact same as the sony, and the only difference is the name and color, i would have rather have gotten the Sony; for the name and black and silver color.  The HP's is off white:(

You can, one option is to get a HD digital set top box that has VGA output, easy.

Another option is to get a line doubler to take a composite or S-video signal and convert it to a signal the monitor can handle. The picture will no doubt look like shit, which is the case with line doublers, but it's an option.

I hear you bro.; glad our monitors from jwang3 were good.  I've spent the last 14 hrs tweaking the hell out of the monitor, and playing the 360 on it.  Simply beautiful!

I have the xbox 1 hooked up to it via a x2vga transcoder connected to the vga in on the monitor, and the 360 connected to the 5 BNC on the monitor via a 5 BNC to vga cable connected to some monster 360 vga cables.  Works perfectly.

The most visually impressive game i've played on the monitor is, hands down, Kameo, with CoD2 coming in second.  Plus, halo 2 looks pretty damn good as well.

I want to hook up a progressive scan dvd player up to this monitor thru the 5 bnc input.

Would this work: 5 bnc to vga - to - mini gender changer - to - vga to component - to - dvd player

That would work, but since your monitor only has component hook-ups and not vga, i'm pretty sure it does not support sync on green.  In that case a transcoder will be necessary.

Progressive scan dvd player > Component cables > Transcoder that allows component hookup (VD-Z3 or the not yet released x2vga2 are the best, and relatively cheap at under $80 shipped; look in my sig for links) > 5 BNC to VGA cable.

That is your best bet that would garantee it would work.  Plus, with a component transcoder you'll be able to hook up a ps2 and play 480p ps2 games, gamecube, and an xbox1 on your monitor.

You could try it as you described, but odds are it will not work.
