Title: How The Hell Do I Get This Surround Sound To Work!
Post by: woofis on January 07, 2006, 01:04:00 PM
ok i have suround sound system. but it doesnt have an optical port in the back. only coaxile. so i got, an optical to coax converter, a coax cable and an optical cable. i hook up the optical to the xbox a/v cable then to the converter then the coax cable from my surround sound to the converter. i turn my system on and i still only get sound from my projector... no surround sound! wut the hell do i do?
- i also have an a/v switchbox that my 360 is hooked up to if that has anything to do with it.
edit: i just hooked up my a/v cables to my surround sound reciever and now i get sound but i know thats not dolby digital 5.1... also theres onyl sound coming from 2 speakers plus the sub. any ideas?

In the Xbox360 dashboard under System/Audio set it to 5.1 Dolby Digital, you will only recieve sound from the sub and 2 speakers in the dashboard, in games it is total 5.1, just go into a game such as Halo 2 and you'll see.

Did you set up your receiver correctly? Maybe read the manual and make sure everything is set correctly and the input is selected for your coaxial input. Double check your xbox setting and make sure its set for surround sound.  If you have a dvd player with digital output or anything else you can test with it, that would be worth a shot as well.

as of right now my coax cables and such arent doing anything. the only reason im getting sound is becuase i hooked up my white and red cables to my reciver. and that is not 5.1... im pretty sure i hooked up everything. the manual doesnt help either.

pretty sure doesnt cut it.  You really need to go through page by page in the manual, what receiver do you have? Can you look up info on it online at all and see if there are any special settings you have to set?  Some receivers you have to set the input to accept it from the digital input or it will grab it from the analog. I advise you again to check the manual or research online about your receiver.

well i got the pro logic setting to work and its coming out but again thats not 5.1 and it had nothing to do with the digital cables.... im confused. i guess i can live with the pro logic but i just wasted over 60 bux on cables and stuff.

Yes i would have suggested to get a new receiver instead with optical input, im sure you could grab one for 100 bux or less. Im sorry to hear that.  Maybe see if you can take back the cables and look into a different receiver.  If it has the component input then it should suport dolby surround. May be a good idea to check and make sure it does support it, if it does then keep playing with it and you should be able to get it to work eventually.

make sure your reciever is set to take the digital input on that channel. soem recievers have a setting for digital or analog input

and yeah this should have been in the tech a/v forum smile.gif

You will not get 5.1 out of the red and white...but you already knew that. But you already knew that. Most receivers have a different setup for digital and audio, but I'm assuming that you knew that as well.

Im guessing that your audio converter does not work. I used a CO2 for a while before I got a good receiver, and still may use it for long runs. You mentioned you have an optical cable hooked to the converter and a coax from there. Any power to the converter? You don't get something for nothing. Are you sure it isn't backwards? that is a coaxial source to a optical receiver? Any way to check this on a known working coaxial reciever and eliminate some options for error?

Setting the 5.1 flag for me just made my surround sound work, not enabled or disabled the digital connection. You still should get sound with the optical cable no matter the setting in the dashboard

On a side note, I'm surprised that optical has become so popular. On short runs, its lossier than a proper copper coaxial interconnect, and it's often cheaper for consumers for both the interconnects and devices. On longer runs (50' and more) optical wins by a long shot in quality but who can afford a 50' optical cable? ;-) While I wished I could have the 360 with copper, im afraid my receiver only has two coaxial inputs, so I''l use them for music and movies ;-)

Is your reciever set for PCM (or digital) input?

I have an Onkyo TX-SR702 and all I have to do is press setup button on the controller, hit ok at initial setup then choose digital input. Since my xbox 360 is using video2, I set video to optical2. Since hte receiver has 4 optical inputs and 1 output on the back.  It's pretty cool.

UGH

1st... this should be posted in the AV forum... moving there now
2nd... YES YOU CAN get 5.1 from Red/White Dolby Pro Logic II is full 5.1, just not as high of quality as Dolby Digital

3rd... are you sure the converter you got is the right type? it's not a simple adapter Optical to coax converter only work one way or another, if you got one that converts Coax to Optical then it wont work because it's backwards and you'd need to get a new converter.

4th... I've never seen a receiver with more than 1 input that didn't require a settings change to utilize a digital audio input. Unless it's a cheap home theater in a box, you need to find the menu where you can set it up to use the digital input.

AT very least you need to tell us the make and model of the receiver you're using.

1.  Be sure the inputs are setup correctly and selected
2.  If it's an A/V receiver, be sure the right audio input is paired with the right video input
3.  Be sure to set the audio output to digital in the dashboard
4.  Check the optical cable to make sure you see light coming through
5.  Check your receiver manual

I run an Onkyo SR703 using optical and it works beautifully.

703 is a nice receiver to there bud. I think it's silver color and comes in black.... not much difference from yours and mine except the 702 model has XM Satillite ready. Not that I need it, I don't subscribe to satillite radio..

2nd... YES YOU CAN get 5.1 from Red/White Dolby Pro Logic II is full 5.1, just not as high of quality as Dolby Digital

I hate to argue with a mod, but this is incorrect. As quoted directly from Dolby Laboratories, "Dolby® Pro Logic® II technology processes any high quality stereo (two-channel) movie and music audio into five playback channels of full-bandwidth surround sound. "  - Two channel = Red and White. You can look more into this at http://www.dolby.com...rologic_II.html  In reality, you don't get more than 4 discreet channels out of Prologic II.

AC3, or Digital Dolby 5.1 is 5 discreet stereo inputs plus an LFE channel for the subwoofer. That information is not carried over two analog lines (it can be carried over 6, but definitly not two). It is generally transferred over coaxial RCA or optical lines.

I am assuming that you meant that you could have surround sound working and have the back speakers active in a two channel setup using Prologic, not that you would have 5.1 or 5 discreet speaker signals from a two channel hookup.

Back, again, to the topic at hand. This is exactly what I was thinking. I posted that I asumed the converter wasnt working, or backwards, but the first thing that tipped me off is he never said he had power going into the converter. Hmmm.... This is where i would focus my efforts.

In the begining of this post he only mentioned that he was only getting sound out his projector,  I am just wondering what kind of projector did you get?  I saw one projector system this weekend at sams club it was a Epson box everthing was on the projector dvd player and speaker outputs only no out puts for for hooking up a better surround sound cause it was built into the projector.  could this be the case?
