Title: Vga Hd Cables On A 4:3 Pc Monitor?
Post by: bubbleguuum on November 22, 2005, 10:34:00 AM
answer here: http://forum.teamxbo...ad.php?t=391503

from this thread the asnwser is no letterboxin, ie it fills all the screen but it's still unknown how it convert the 1280x768 16:9 framebuffer that games renders, to the 4:3 ratio.

However there is hope, if your monitor supports it you can still sonfigure the X360 to send any 16:9 resolution to the monitor and play with the monitor controls to strech the image to have the correct 16:9 ratio. If your monitor is recent it should keep the settings so you don't have to adjust every time.

I tried this on a PC game running @ 1280x768 on a 4:3 monitor and it works great ! The game was letterboxed with the correct aspect ratio.

most of teh resolutions allow you to specify the aspect ratio, and it compenstates for that choice. although, some of the resolutions allow only 4:3 or 16:9.

but you shouldnt have too much trouble with it

Thanks for this info! So it is up to the game to support proper letterboxing in case of displaying on a 4:3 resolution. Now if you want to play Kameo in fullscreen (not letterboxed) is that possible ? And about PGR3 can you compare the image between 4:3 and 16:9 resolution : is some of the image lost ?

If you have a CRT monitor around could you try it and tell if the 60Hz refresh rate is noticeable ?

Can anybody tell me how the games look on a CRT PC-monitor. Since the output signal of the xbox360 is only 60Hz max I think it would give you major headaches playing with this refresh rate?

Sorry, someone was fatser with the same question. smile.gif

All Xbox360 games are run in widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio. None of them will be shown in 4:3, so there is no chance to get rid of letterboxing without stretching the image.

Also, none of the image is lost when running PGR3 and having it stretched. It simply takes the 1280x720 resolution and stretches it to fit your display.

As for whether 60hz is noticable, thats really a per-person thing. Some people it will bother, some it won't. It will be just like as if you changed the refresh rate of your computer's display to 60hz.

From what I understand of your previous post:

Kameo: displayed letterboxed with monitor 1280x1024
PGR3: displayed fullscreen with monitor 1280x1024

am I correct ?

if it did just that the image would be distorded in the vertical direction

I read somewhere 60Hz sent by the console was somewhat less noticeable than 60Hz sent by a PC graphic card...but I want to see it to believe it.

yeah, PGR3 does run at fullscreen in 1280x1024 mode(which isn't real 1280x1024, but stretched 720p) sad.gif  in race anyway, everyting else displays perfectly with borders..including the garage and geometry wars game...

so kameo displays perfectly? any other games that play well with borders? i want to enjoy my lcd monitor until i can afford a real hd tv....probably won't be until next year sad.gif

Alright, since PGR stretches the image, can't you simply manually 'destretch' the image using the monitor's controls? Sure it's a pain to change it everytime, but it's better than playing a stretched image.

i think everyone needs to stop complainign about the 60hz refresh rate. that is a stock standard rate, and just about everything uses it.

only flashy computers with flashy monitors use anything above that...

and on the widescreen thing...thank god for my widescreen lcd monitor  biggrin.gif   ill be seeing everything in full

I've been using the 360 on my 19" crt 4:3 pc monitor via a vga cable, and 60Hz doesn't bother me at all; i do not see the refresh rate.

Foe-Hammer, When you say you dont notice the refresh rate, do you mean you dont notice how bad 60 hz is at any point in time (if u were playing a pc game), or do you not notice the 60 hz when the X360 is plugged up. Because as someone mentioned before, I read somewhere that the 60 hz being sent to the PC-CRT is not as noticable as if a 60 hz refresh rate was being sent from a computer. Could you maybe clear up your statement, or expound on it some please?

While working in windows, or playing pc games i have to have the refresh rate above 60Hz.  Anything below 75Hz and i notice the refresh rate; makes my eyes bug out  blink.gif .  But for some reason, the 360 dashboard, and when playing 360 games (this also goes for playing xbox 1 games on my pc monitor via a trancoder) at 60Hz does not bother me one bit.  I do not notice the refresh rate.

well can you get your monitor to tell you exactly what teh refresh rate is?

maybe it could be that the whole system is optimised for 60hz, so it has been tweaked a bit.

I'll confirm what Kruderand said. Switching the resolution to 1024x768 makes PGR3 display properly.

They only need to do one simple live update. It could be a looong time.
