360's Guitar Hero II guitar works in Windows, Frets on Fire

The USB-equipped X-plorer guitar that ships with the just-released Guitar Hero II for Xbox 360 has some interesting tricks up its nonexistant but metaphorically convenient sleeve. Randy tipped us off that the guitar controller works in Windows Vista, but we had to check for ourself. This image was captured in Windows XP.

Of course, we quickly fired up freeware PC clone, Frets on Fire, to see if we could manage to get these two to play nicely together. Sure enough, after a minute of changing the control configuration, we were able to rock out! Unfortunately, while Mac OS X recognized the device immediately, it failed to be detected as an HID-compliant gamepad by either GamePad Companion or the open source Xbox 360 Controller driver.

Cool beans.

I have Guitar Hero II...I have Vista...I should try this out!

Guitar Hero II is pretty kick ass. I suck at it..but, it does kick ass.

Guitar Hero must turn people into the biggest "Rocker" posers ever.. lol. ::sees myself becoming one::

Oh, btw, for those who don't know and have this game- There are 2 different models of guitars out in the wild. One guitar, model number: 95055, is commonly known to have a faulty whammy bar. Model number: 95065 is said to have fixed this issue.

How do you differentiate between the 2? Model number: 95055 has the pedal jack on the same side as the power/USB cord. Model number: 95065 has the pedal jack on the same side as the Mic port.

There is no way to differentiate between the retail boxes, AFAIK. The first GHII that I bought had the 95055 model guitar. On the back of the retail box, it had the model number 95055. Then I returned it and failed to find a retail box with the model number 95065 on the back of it. Giving up, I just took my chance and bought a random GHII from Circuit City. Luckily, it has the 95065 guitar...even though it says 95055 on the box...

Thought I'd share that...Not sure if it's pinned somewhere or something.

yeah, just picked it up at circuity coty, guy at register messed up.

it comes with 1600 MS points free at CC, plus i had a 15 off 100 so i got a datel headset adapter for the 360 controller, somehow... 89.99 + 9.99 - 15 = 75 bucks after tax :?

It was instantly recognised when I plugged it into XP, then took about a minute and a half to install the drivers (presumably via the internet), and then it was installed. It recognised my Live headset as a seperate device too!! I'm just about to have a go with this Frets On Fire now, but so far it seems that XP is a go too!!

**EDIT**

I was getting no sound from my PC speakers initially, which phased me for a few moments. If you install it with the Live headset plugged in, it automatically changes your PC's main sound output to the headset. All you need to do is go to the control panel and change it to your regular sound card. But yes, once you reconfigure the keys in the Frets On Fire option menu, it works fine in XP!! Confirmed.

I plugged it into my computer.  I'm running Windows XP 64-bit.  No drivers were found at first, but it knew that it was "Guitar Hero X-plorer".  After clicking on 'next' to search for drivers from windows update, the guitar installed.  So, YES, it works in windows XP.

Thanks for the info... I picked up a copy at Sam's Club yesterday and the whammy bar works fine.  I was wondering what all the fuss was about, and seeing your post led me to find my guitar says 95065 on the back.

My guitar works on my both my desktop and laptop with Windows XP.  I love Frets on Fire and the near limitless song selection.

I am running windows xp home edition with the 95065 model guitar and confirms this definately works:
To clear up the vague intructions go to in Frets on Fire
Main Menu/Settings/Key Settings/ then just go to fret one press Return(default control) then just press the green button on your X-plorer controller and repeat for the rest of the fret buttons and change the return button to the strum button on your controller and your set. Hope this helps
Does anyone know how to get more songs into this game? or how to maybe make them? any help would be apprieciated

another nice feature in FOF is that you can add your songs from the PS2 version of Guitar Hero I
But this just takes alot of time....

I just hope that they´ll soon add whammybar function and starpower to Fof (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Btw : i have the 360 GHII Guitar and it works like a charm in Frets On Fire

Cheers!

now that is some creative thinking - guitar motion control.

nice of ol' MS to make this work so well on the pc, but i wonder why no Mac support....or linux, or BeOS, ha ha ha

im wondering though, why is there a headset port?  i know this isnt a live multilayer game, so whats the point?

i think i did hear that they might add live multiplayer via an auto update, can this be done, would they do this?

Well if it didnt have a headset port then there wouldnt be room for upgrades in future release like GH3. It would be pretty sh!tty if you had to buy a new guitar because this one didnt support chat. Or maybe youll be able to hear your guitar through a headset, kinda like a monitor? I dunno..................

The reason for the headset.. is the same in just about every other peripheral made for the 360. While yes, GHII is not LIVE multiplayer, there is nothing stopping you from playing your single player or co-op game on your side, and talking in private chat on LIVE.

I know.. I did this the other night with No Remorse. Neither of us wanted to drop outta GHII to sit in a lobby in Gears or Graw2 to talk (we normally have 2-6 man conversations going in game lobbies with the crew)

Headset works fine btw.

The future holds some interesting news.. Rock Band, from Harmonix. 4 Man Ban, featuring a classic and bass guitar, drum, and a mic (a la singstar style)

not sure what they are gonna feed us GHII owners though. just more content I imagine.

If DDR has online support then I'm sure they will try to add online support for GHII. Is it just me or are games that make you physically interact are funner than games that don't.

PS: Frets On Fire is a really awesome game.

This actually isn't true. BOTH models have whammy bar problems. I know because I've got one of the 95065's and the bar only works about half the time. A lot of other people with 95065's are reporting the same problem as well.

I think the confusion about it started on release day when someone with both models noticed his 95056 worked fine while his 95055 was having problems. So he assumed that there was nothing wrong with the 56's and posted this info with pics and the news spread like wildfire, so now everyone assumes the 55's are the only ones with problems.

The good news is that if you have a guitar with a bad whammy bar, it can be fixed fairly easily. Someone on the official GH forums posted this fix with pics. Just tried it out on my guitar controller and my whammy bar has been working flawlessly ever since:

Quick question but maybe not an easy answer....

I plugged in my guitar tonight and drivers were detected immediately. I have tested this with windows XP and Vista home and I have found the same issue and wonder if anyone else has it.

The D-pad is not recognized at all on either machine thus the Strum bar does not work. When I plug in both wireless 360 controller (with usb adaptor) or wired 360 controller, I find that even those D-pads are not not being recognized as well.

Last night I played ultimate alliance and the D-pad worked just fine along with emulators and so on.....

I am wondering why this is and does anyone else have this issue???

( I have not tried to just reinstall the controller drivers again from MS)

The worst thing happened to my GH2.
I went to pick it up to play it and
BAM! Static shocked me.
Went to go play and guess what? Strummer is completely fried.
So I go to find my receipt to bring it back, and I can't find it, searching for hours.
Finally look in my dryer, and its in my pants pocket, all stuck together from the wash and dryer.
Words are completely gone and can barley read anything.
So I go to try my luck and I bring it to Best Buy to exchange it and guess what?
GUITAR HERO 2, OUT OF STOCK come back in a few weeks.
SO LAME!

I can't find the settings in Frets on Fire to actually use the Xplorer. XP downloaded the drivers and the Xplorer is installed, but I searched the settings in Frets on Fire and cannot get the Xplorer to work.

EDIT: Nevermind I got it.
