It looks amazing!  I guess the rumors that it would return it Liberty City were true, although I think Liberty City is only 1 of the cities.   And I can't wait the play as the russian dude, he looks cool.

I'm not a GTA fan really but WOW WOW WOW this is what next gen (current gen now) was made for! i just hope that it's as good on both the 360 and PS£ cause it looks so good thaty if it's better on the PS£ i'll have to buy one.

WWWWOOOOWWWW this is going to be SOO cool really is like a living city now. And the new main character looks and sounds ace,

I really think this is going to be the best generation for gaming EVER!!

Zelda twilight princess, Gears of WAR, Dead Rising (I love this game), Rainbow six Vegas (Under rated online it's BETTER than GOW ONLINE!), Halo 3, Forza 2 , Mass Effect, Oblivion, GTA IV, MGS4, Super mario Galaxy (And everything made by Nintendo) just to name but a few..... Man even EA are starting to make OK games (Fight night)

It would be really interesting if it WAS New York, but many people have pointed out that 'Liberty City' is visible in many places throughout the trailer.

I am looking forward to it, I was expecting a nice looking, gritty, HD game, and Rockstar look to be delivering, and better yet a new angle with the Russian main character. Glad they didn't go with some Ghetto gangster wannabe or the mafia.

Looking forward to it. biggrin.gif

Dude, watch the trailer again.  "Liberty Ferry Terminal",  "Liberteen" , "Liberty Tree" Newspaper,  "Platypus; Liberty City" Ship.  That is Liberty City.

Looks fucking awesome!

To add to the Liberty City/New York argument, it has the Statue of Liberty,I think it had the Empire States building and it says on one of them electronic sign board things "Liberty City".

Such a good move on the Russian guy, I hated being the black guy in SA. GTA3>GTA:VC/SA.

I don't really appreciate that dude! I'm not myself black but i don't think the reason you didn't like the character was because of his race. Well i hope not anyway!

I do agree however that this new bloke seems to add a new dimension to the genre!!

Maybe there should be a choice of different characters to choose from therefore depending on which character you choose there is a different storyline......just a thought.

Oh and about the GTA IV trailer looking good but that is usually the case with game trailers...they look great but the gameplay suffers....will have to wait and see.

GOOD idea and maybe they should have the characters story lines cross over like in Snatch!! That would be cool!!!

I have faith that this game will deliver the goods. The numbered GTA's have destroyed the "expansions" in my opinion. I hope this will now at least cause trickles of information from R* now.

This game looks amazing, Hopefully it will look as good as the trailer. I know most game trailers out there look awesome, but they don't use the actual footage from the game, this trailer however looked like they did, so it should look about the same as we saw.

Anyways, I loved how they made the trailer like the Qatsi films. Amazing.

Liberty City is New York. The statue of LIBERTY is there hence LIBERTY CITY. They just didn't call it NEW YORK. Just like San Andreas was obviously Los Angeles and areas of california.

Liberty City is based on New York city, it is not actually New York City.  There was a rumor going around that GTA4 was not in Liberty City(which of course is a fictional city based on New York), but was in the actual New York City, which never made any sense.  This trailer puts those rumor to rest though.

Would have been nice to see some actual gameplay, rather than all pre-rendered. Cause lets face it, games never look as good as they do in a preview or on the back of a box.

That just means nothing. These are cutscenes from the game, no actual gameplay portrayed... Gameplay to me is when you have control over whats going on on the screen, and not the scenes included in the game as prerendered video, which technically is also real-time in game engine gameplay.  Just like someone stated before, all trailers look awesome, gameplay is a whole different story... Anyway, the main character looks promising and that's the highest point of this trailer IMO.

Wow, you have no idea what you are talking about.

Pre-rendered video and pre-scripted in game cut scenes ARE NOT  "technically" the same thing.

I just noticed in one of the shots, there's a sign that says "Welcome to Liberty City" and sign next to it that says "I 'heart' Liberty City".  This is definitely Liberty City, but just a newly designed, bigger, better, badder Liberty City, with new landmarks.

I can't wait to get him really fat at Cluckin Bell, and then play as the Fat Russian dude.  That will rule!

I'm sure it will be on ALL systems cause there is SOOoooooo much $$$ to be made here.
different systems will get different goodies, XBL marketplace will probably offer the best goodies, unless Sony starts increasing their spending on their version of "Live".

Hey my praise can go even further for Rainbow Six: Vegas by saying and you can quote me on this

"The cover system in Vegas is better than the cover system in gears"

There's only one problem with Vegas it's that bloody gun noise that repeats itself over and over again on live... i thought they were meant to fix it...

If they would have pre-rendered this trailer, there would not be all the jaggies on display like there is. Anyone who knows what they are talking about can clearly see this is ingame footage. The game has a nice look to it, its a little bit grittier than what I had hoped for, but it certainly looks awesome.

I'm little disappointed that the game takes place in NA once again, let alone Liberty City.   I was hoping that it would take place in Europe, China, or Japan or some other country.

That being said, it looks great, and it will probably be the finest game in the series so far.

This game is just the beginning of a new generation of series of GTAs to come and I assume the next one to come out in 2008 to be based in Tokyo.

It was nothing to do with the ps2, well just some imrovements were lacking during porting, better textures could have been used but the game engine was the actual limit, you see it's the same engine that was used to create GTA3 was used to develop GTA VC and SA, plus R* had said they would release a trilogy on the GTA3 engine.

Well if he's not an old man, then he's a crackhead.
Drug abuse can age you really fast.
However I doubt Rockstar would throw a wrench in the mix and allow for a crackhead to be the starring character in one of gaming's biggest franchises.

As for you cats defending that racist SOB, you're showing your true colors grr.gif

I'm not a cat dawgg.  I'm not defending him but you don't know he's racist.  To me it sounds like you might be though.  It's not important, mods can easily delete the posts that they think arn't needed or deem inappropriate.  I actually liked playing as CJ, it put a little twist on the game for me.

Game looks like the cinematics on Crackdown but not as cartoonish.  The gameplay could very well be just like the trailer.  At least I hope so.  Will be a long time to wait for me.  I also wonder how H3 will compete with GTA4.

i see what you mean ... i just think the ps2 slowed the progress of the game getting a "new" graphics engine in general, cause of the lack of ps2's power thats alot of the reason i think they kept the same graphics engine for as long as they did.... since the game was pretty much exclusive to the ps2... cause if they made graphics similar to pc's higher end graphics engines roughly 3 years ago it would have clearly been better than the ps2 best graphics, so then the ps2 would be screwed.... cause mark my words ill bet they will have pretty much the same graphics engine in GT4 for years to come now until the next batch of consoles come out.... this is one of the main reasons i think consoles pretty much dictate the graphics engine limits of the GTA games.

Few Points need to be made.

First off NYC has always been a city used in FICTIONAL MEDIA and given new names. This is common place when media creators want to PARRALLEL the real world but want to give you a sense of fantasy.

Batman it was called GOTHAM - as per movie not comic.
Superman it is called Metropolis - as per movie not comic.
Some movie I forget they called it AMSTERDAM (after its original name NEW AMSTERDAM back in the 1600's) though it was modern day NY.
Stephen Kings Dark Tower Series - He calles NYC - LUD - yes LUD
And lastly ROCKSTAR's LIBERTY CITY - IS NYC in alternite universe just like the other examples above.

SO Liberty city IS NYC - but called Libery City in the game.  - Whats the big deal here. IT IS LIBERTY CITY - IT IS NYC they are the same.  LIke calling a baseball a ball, white ball, white ball with red stichtes.

As I pointed out above - by giving NYC the name Liberty City they subconsciously withdraw the player from making Parrallels to the real world - no matter how many real landmarks they use.  By giving the City (the real Main charater) a Ficticious name - you surrender the player from the get go into realising that this game is FANTASY - Psycohologial BS to throw off people like Jack T. (well get back to him later)

Second - The game looks great so far - will atuall gameply match it? - my answer: Probibly.

Third - We no nothing of the scenero, YET - the narrator of the Trailer might be the main charater - as master chief is in the Halo Series - but we still got to play as other charaters in Halo 2... Perhaps there is more than one charater here as well.  Though from the trailer it looks like we are getting all 5 buroughs of NYC - Im sure the playable area will be huge as Manhattan Island really isn't that big and don't make for all that much fun in a Next gen game like this. SO by giving us Liberty city Island, Statan Island, QUeens, Brooklyn, Bronx (you know yankee stadium will be so Different and named something stupid - perhaps Camdumb Yards - bad joke sorry)

Fourth - I hope Rockstar puts JACK THOMPSON (make him the worth 10 achivement points for finding) in the game so I can go all Next Generation on his ass like i did in mortal Kombat (custom create a character).  You know Mr Crack Jack is going to be all over this game.  Jack - here are my words to you - Leave video games alone and we the games of the world will not make fun of you like the fat ugly kid in 5th grade during recess.  DO us all a favor and leave our world alone and we will leave you alone.  If you continue to be a doush bag - I hope rockstar gets you debarred and sues your a$$ faster than than sonic can run from begining to end of a level. <-- Ghey but effective

Lastly - to the person who said - do you think they will put the TOQWER IN THE GAME?  You did not offend me a true NYer.  I wish they would - Remember it's rockstarts Fantasy City - they can put what ever they want into it.  But if you look at the end of the trailer where you see from brooklyn into manhattan, with the brooklyn bridge - you should see the towers in the background if they were going to put them in there.  TO be honest the Skyline is not very accurate from that vantage point as there is a old white tower that should be there behind the bridge - 1 bloock from where the towers used to be and it is not - so it looks like NO TOWERS and not a very accurate skyline.

Later all,
NYCXBOX

Well - Everyone can banter on that this is a great trailer - but the reality is far from it!!

This trailer is an awful one for debuting a next gen franchise like this. We see more shots of the damn skies and the tops of buildings than anything else!! I'm not buying into this cos there's buildings in it!! Where's the story, where's detailed shots of characters - why do we need to see that the lighting changes for night to day - we've seen that already in other games!!

The one shot of a crowd scene and it's sped up... and when we finally get to the end and see our hero character, I jsut couldn't take my eye off the nasty mesh wire fence on each side of the bridge - clearly old school flat/planar map with an alpha channel texture - not even any bump mapping! - then when I did get around to looking at the character - I thought hmm next gen - I dont think so - not very realistic at all.

Hell - show me more - I aint convinced!

I'm willing to bet you don't know what foreplay is...  The trailer was just meant to get people drooling. They are building up anticipation about the game... don't want reveal it all to early. To be honest, they really don't need to show us anything. Just the franchise name alone is enough to sell millions of copies on day one. If I remember correctly for GTA:SA, at about this time before the release, they had only given us THREE screen shots.  The game will look better as time goes on.  (Hopefully)      smile.gif

It depends, you want the "stripped" version (PS3) or the "full" version (360)?

Some NYC landmarks in the trailer:

Cyclone roller coaster @ Coney Island
Governor's Island ferry terminal
Trinity Church (not sure)
Statue of Liberty
Empire State Buiilding
Chrysler Building
Flatiron Building
Pan Am/Met Life Building
Times Square/theater district
Manhattan Bridge
Roosevelt Island Tram (shouldn't be next to Manhattan Bridge though)
Brooklyn Bridge

I couldn't place the glass dome.  Several of the shots are taken from Brooklyn which would fit in well with the Russian theme.

I think this definately should get labeled a "teaser"
I am very excited for this game as are others.  I can't wait to see actual gameplay.

I liked the trailer. It showed me what i wanted to see about the game.

I'll bring up San Andreas again and the whole "black character" talk. I didn't care that CJ was black. What i didn't like was playing though the game as a thug. The whole concept of being in a gang, and killing other gang members somehow didn't sit right with me. I don't know why. I loved the story in Vice City. It was cool to play a Tony Montana type character.

I loved GTA III and Vice City. I never finished San Andreas because of the reason mentioned above. Hopefully GTA IV will be great.

Grand Theft Auto was Exellent in 1 & 2, once the 3D starting comming around it just threw it all out.
I Still play the old ones, 3d ones got boring real fast. Just like any other Driver game etc.
Top Down gives it more uniqeness to it. Thats where it started thats where it should of stayed. They just wanted to be like the other big wig companys i guess.

OK anyone saying it is New York City is stupid.

Yes it shows the Statue of Liberty

BUT IT'S LIBERTY CITY

No GTA has ever been modeled exactly after a real city, and this is the exact same case.  Yes, it does look a lot like New York, but they aren't going to call it New York, because they don't want to have to make the whole city exactly as it is in New York.  Also, If you look closely on the cop cars they say "LCPD"

But it isn't the Liberty from GTA 3, it will probably be amazingly HUGE, and there is no doubt in my mind they will have all the country side because that was the big claim to fame in San Andreas that made it different then the rest of the GTA's.

This trailer was dissapointing because it didn't actually show any real information on the game, it only showed the city and graphics and character.  No weapons, only showed like 5 cars, and it was so short.  But it still shows that they have gotten some stuff done on it, and from here, they will just keep releasing more information since it is close to being released.

Later all,
NYCXBOX

Gotham City and Metropolis do not have all of the famous landmarks that this city has.  Definitely NYC until Rockstar says otherwise.

You've obviously never played Grand Theft Auto: London 1969 OffRoader23.

You guys need to watch the video again if you think it is NYC.  Read some of the signs, it says "Liberty City" at least 3 times in the trailer, and at all kinds of words combos pertaining to Liberty City.  Who much you want to bet that ZERO buildings in GTA4 will have the same name as they do the real NYC?  I doubt NYC has a "getalife" building or a "Liberteen" building.  It's a ridiculous argument.

Question, how big was/is the Russian mafia in NYC?
Hell was it ever there in the first place?

Ya, the Russian Mafia in the US was/is based out of southern Brooklyn especially near Brighton Beach on Coney Island.  If you walk around that area you'll see signs in both English and Russian.  The locals call it "Little Odessa".  The roller coaster in the trailer is the Cyclone which in real life is right in that neighborhood.

The "Getalife" building is the "Met Life" building: http://www.pugsplace...hoto/10/301.jpg

I've been shocked at some attitudes towards this trailer. I'm surprised how many people are judging or writing off the game based on a 30 second or so trailer. Some people don't understand that this is simply to start the hype machine up for the next 6 months.
For people who say that this simply looks like an Xbox title, you've obviously been spoiled and having played a game on the Hulk in a while. Go back and study the trailer. Look at the detail. Look at the draw distance. Look at the lighting. It's clearly a big step forward and this is still 6 months from release.
Everyone is basing it on looks. I'm sure opinions will change once plot and gameplay details emerge. I loved the trailer and I'm sure I'll buy the game unless they change something drastic. I'm looking forward to getting details between now and October.
I'm surprised there's not more hype surrounding it already, but as I said, maybe some people don't 'get' the point of the trailer.
I for one can't wait for more information to see where this next installment is going to take the franchise. A version the same as the others with tarted-up graphics? I'd take it.

I have to agree with you, I think for an open ended title with so much going on; the graphics look great.
Judging by Rockstar's previous GTA games, I expected to be underwhelmed by the graphics.
But it was the opposite, I was quite impressed. It goes to show what the devs can do when they don't base their game engine on sub par hardware!

i think the graphics will be fine, some people just dont understand that you cant have SUPER highly detailed environments and characters on the large of a scale yet.  i think some people expected "next gen" to mean final gen. we still have a long way to go before everything starts to look photorealistic on a grand scale, theres alot more on the screen the just 2 table tennis players and a table.

Boy, you blind or sumin? It looks better than Saints Row (not rockstar but same engine) which looks better than SA. SA looks better than VC, VC looks better than GTAIII. They are all a step above eachother and it is quite easy to see this.

Actually I have, but that game sucked.  I guess that was the one off one, but it isn't modeled directly after London, just like all games are never exactly after a city (except true crime New York was modeled after part of New York and was somewhat accurate)

People saying the graphics don't look good, you need to have your eyes checked.  The graphics look AWESOME, the shaders and the time cycle looks freaking amazing.  The shadows from buildings actually project down onto the streets, and all objects have dynamic shadowing (unlike GTA SA for PC which had minor dynamic shadowing but it didn't look very good)

It does look similar to Saint's Row, but it looks mostly better with the shadowing and lighting in the sky, on the buildings, and on the cars.

I can't wait until they release more information, like some cars, some detailed information about car damage, some story line, some weapons, and show some in action gameplay.

Liberty City in the original GTA was clearly also based on NYC.  GTA3's Liberty City was pretty different.  It looks like they're returning to their roots, although as some have pointed out even though the landmarks look the same they have different names and they're not really in the right places in relation to each other.  I'm sure it'll have to be scaled down too.

New York City's mayor has denounced the next version of Grand Theft Auto (GTA), for the violent game's resemblance to the metropolis. Although the game is set in fictional "Liberty City," trailers show familiar New York City landmarks, such as the Statue of Liberty, Coney Island's Cyclone, and the Brooklyn Bridge.

A spokesperson for Mayor Michael Bloomberg noted that the mayor does not support any video game where "you earn points for injuring or killing police officers."

In other news reports, city council member Peter Vallone noted that setting the game in the "safest city in America would be like setting Halo in Disneyland."

Mixed Reaction

Although GTA contains many scenes of violence, so too do numerous movies that are set in New York -- yet the city does not make an outcry about being depicted cinematically as a haven for prostitutes, mafiosos, or serial killers, noted Jason Della Rocca, executive director of the International Game Developers Association.

"When you look at other forms of entertainment, how many movies, books, and TV shows use New York City as a setting for their stories?" he asked.

"There's a lot of stuff out there that's pretty over the top, and doesn't put New York in the best light," Della Rocca added. "They don't complain about that, yet when a game depicts similar incidents as movies in a similar setting, they're up in arms."

This is not the first time that a city has balked over the use of its landscape for a video game, he said. When first-person shooter Rainbow Six, based on a Tom Clancy novel, set one of its versions in Las Vegas, the city's officials expressed their disapproval by trying to have the game banned.

Art Form?

The furor over GTA and Rainbow Six highlights a larger issue of what constitutes art, Della Rocca said. Movies and even TV shows are considered art forms, or at least protected entertainment.

But, he believes, video games are not seen as art in any form, and protests such as those coming from the New York mayor's office show a lack of respect for games, said Della Rocca.

"There's a just a mismatch in terms of reaction, based on the perception of games," he noted. "In this particular case with New York, it doesn't seem like it's politically motivated, like, 'Let's beat up on this game to benefit our political campaign.' Instead, it seems they're genuinely unhappy. But that just shows a lack of understanding about games as an entertainment form."

Critics of the game point out that GTA and other shooter games differ from movies because they contain interactivity, giving a user the ability to choose their actions.

The new version of Grand Theft Auto is scheduled to ship to stores in October.
