That's no surprise to me - IMO they've always made the best games.

What impresses me the most is that Nintendo has 4 spots in the top 10. The statement can be narrowed to Nintendo dominates best selling games franchise list, and as long as they keep releasing Mario/Pokemon/DK/Zelda games they will continue to. Out of the top 10 the only franchise I think is going to go down is Sonic. The rest have plenty of juice left to keep them on top.

This could also be viewed as some of the titles that have been around the longest.

What's the oldest, still kicking, American franchise you can think of?

1. Mario - 1983
2. Pokemon - 1995
3. Final Fantasy - 1987
4. Madden NFL - 1989
5. The Sims - 2000
6. Grand Theft Auto - 1997
7. Donkey Kong - 1981
8. The Legend of Zelda - 1986
9. Sonic the Hedgehog - 1991
10. Gran Turismo - 1997

The Sims is the youngest game on the list at 7 years old
Donkey Kong is the oldest at 26 (damn it's older then I am)

I mean what old American franchises are still selling games?

Also games like the sims, pokemon, and madden are somewhat artificially inflated as they release new versions nearly annually.

After many years viewing this forum I have finally decided to post I just hope it does not become a flame post. No doubt, mario is and has always been a lucrative franchise for nintendo. My question is who are they arriving at this figures are they looking at cross platform for the other franchise or actual units sold. Also nintendo under the mario moniker would release many variants of mario games whether it be mario kart, mario smash bros, super mario, mario tennis ya'll get the point, that could also assist with making mario a massive brand. The mario brand seems like it also had a strong head start on the rest, but you have to give respect where respect is due. Hats off to nintendo.

Yeah agreed.

And Japanese makers had a little bit of a head start too wouldn't you say?

I believe they are looking at every game made with the word "Mario" in the title, on any platform, and then summing up the sales from all of those games.

I believe this because if it was only the core series they probably would have referred to it as "Super Mario Bros" franchise.

Id's games. Doom, Castle Wolfenstein, and Quake are then oldest i can think of.

It seems only console video games sell the best. Sims was still on the consoles, and GTA: San Andreas probably sold more copies than every other GTA combined. Mario and DK and Zelda were never on any consoles, Madden did terrible on the PC. Same stories with Sonic, GT, and FF.

Despite how awesome some PC games are, they appeal to hardcore gamers, which makes them sell less than it to casual. Selling numbers does NOT make any game better than another. IMO Mario got boring, while new franchises give new feeling to games.
