Title: New Installer/utility Disk...worth It?
Post by: atomiX on June 05, 2004, 08:30:00 PM
I've currently been working on an Evox-based utility disk kind of like slayers (for me and some friends).

people have pointed out X-Disk...my disk is not meant to be full of stuff that will not be needed...i don't plan on putting emulators or similar things on it. It is made to be a UTILITY disk that has an acceptable size and that can be used to set-up a newly modded xbox quickly.

I've thought about releasing it to the public but not sure if it's worth it. It is BASED on Slayer's but with new layout and updated/new dashes and apps. Here are a few of the features:

- emergency video mode change (NTSC/PAL)
- flash modchip/tsop using 4981 or 4983
- flash modchip with evox M8 (1.6 version only)
- flash new modchip (w/ cromwell) using 4981
- restore HD to retail using MS dash 4920 OR 5659 (you have a choice)
- ability to install to E: or F: or run these apps from disk:
     Bios Checker
     Boxplorer
     DVD2XBOX
     Fan Tester (fanthing)
     X2Config
     XBftp
     XBMC
     Xenium ID check
     PBL w/ debug bfm bios
- install these dashboards:
     Evox
     Avalaunch
     MXM
     Nexgen
     THC Lite
     ADDED: UnleashX
MS XDK Launcher 4627 (not XDK) UPDATE: XDK Launcher 5849
- format the HD (all partitions or only selected)
- lock/unlock HD (w/ evox OR ConfigMagic)
- install a few extra evox skins
- reboot & shutdown .XBE's

would this be useful to anyone or will it just be "another utility disk for n00bs" and just keep it to myself? Should there be stuff removed/added?

It is meant for n00bs but I find it very useful when i need certain things done (like after formatting)  :P

Anyway, looking for some feedback here...
Feel free to post your opinion

UPDATE:
here is a screenshot is people were wondering how it looked like:

Why not? I'd sure use since Slayers seems out of date.

If i'm wrong don't mind me. "I'm just a n00b." blink.gif

well they already have an installer and or update to slayers install disk (which is soo old) called X-disk. it is a very good installer actually. www.x-disk.com it might not be up any more because it has illegal bios's on the installer? sad.gif   It is  biggrin.gif

ConfigMagic is on the disk but in the Lock/Unlock section, so it's not listed...I will add it in the list.

well if it can set up my box so that it launches the xdk launcher, i.e. your installer sets it up with bfm bios etc then i would like to hav it for my collection. You never know how handy installers can be especially when your xbox gets screwed. so how you going to release this?

so how you going to release this?

If i do release it (if the demand is great enough) I will need to find hosting of course. Will probably send it to a few experienced testers before this (mostly for modchip/TSOP flashing). I know most of it works from my own testing but still have a few minor things left and might add/update things at the last minute. I've been a bit busy lately but will try to finish it soon.

the thing about installer disk is soon as u release them they get outdated . So say you use slayers disk and u install everything but then need to like unistall half the software cause most have been updated by now. Most modders i know just took the slayers disk took all the crap they didnt want in it out and put in files they want in each install on the disk(hence making there own slayer style disk cough cough its just evox functions anyways) . Sooo really only people that would find this usefull is noobs. Which takes away from there learning experince and later they screw something up lol.

maybe thats just me though

i fully respect your POV but like rab154 said, it can be quite useful to get you out of the ditch when you screw something up. I do agree that n00bs should do it "the old fashioned way" though since it avoids problems later on.

like it says in the first post, it was originally created just for me and some friends and then i thought "since lots of n00bs here on X-S get lots of probs related to outdated installers, why not get this one out?". i also find it quite useful when modding a new xbox; everything is located at the same place.

anyway, thanks for the input  biggrin.gif

This is would be an excelent utility.  I was wondering if you could release the same disk but with all the apps.  Those arnt really needed.  I like the dashboard choice and all but most people dont need and old version of XBMC and Bios checker.  Thats just my opinion though.

just because not everybody uses emulators and it would bulk-up the size of the disk uneccessarily (spelling ok?  laugh.gif)

(it's a utility disk) it's meant to be used for modding a new xbox or installing a new HD. if you want emulators, just download the ones you want...

there is no older version (well...only my 1.0 beta) but it hasn't been released yet...in fact, nothing has been released. however, i should be done with this one (v1.0) pretty soon. i'm just trying to do a few small bug fixes as well as updating the apps/dashes to their newest versions. i'm on 28.8k dialup (yes, it sucks) for the summer so it does take quite some time.

sleeping.gif). i haven't uploaded it to my host yet but will do so as soon as possible. as i said, i'm on dialup for the summer so uploading from here is not a possibility. however, i have my ways...

official release date is today (August 7, 2004) so all apps are up-to-date up until today. the only app that isn't fully updated is XBMC. i felt that putting the point release of XBMC (v1.0) is the best thing to do since there is a new CVS build every week.

filename will be atomiX_utility_disk_v1.0.rar
will let you know as soon as it's up

UPDATE: uploaded and ready to go (thanks to delacruz for hosting)

i'm not sure i understand fully what you're saying. the disk does give you the option of installing PBL as an app in E:\Apps or F:\Apps.. what do you mean by "not run from a disk installed to the harddrive".

btw, thanks for your input.

and is there a place to find out more about PBL and how to install the XDK launcher?

the disk will install the files automatically to their respective places. note that the XDK launcher files are to be installed in set locations. you can't put them where you want. if you are still looking for info on how to do it manually, check this out.

as for the bios, i use TATX_Debug_Dual which can be split to 512k so you can still use another bios if you have 1MB of flash space on your chip. i simply didn't include it in the list of flashable bioses since most n00bs don't know that a debug bios cannot load everything a normal bios does. however, i included it with PBL. just install the debug-configured version of PBL and you will be able to load the BFM version of the same bios. if i remember correctly, this bios doesn't support the focus encoder so you will need a focus-compatible debug bios. i think team gueux made one.

is this when you try to flash your chip or when you actually try to boot the disk. if it's the latter, what bios do you have on each bank? i could help out better if you explained your problem with a bit more detail.
