Title: Controller Emulator For Xbox
Post by: Madhatta on May 26, 2004, 10:16:00 PM
I know there is currently no way to use a keyboard and mouse for any of the shooters available on xbox. I was thinking today though, would it be possible to make a homebrew emulation program that binds specific keys/buttons/movements of the mouse and keyboard combo to xbox controller functions? I know they have keyboard emulation programs for computer so games without support for gamepads can be played with them.

It seems like something a lot of people are interested in (including myself) but there is not much mention of it anywhere and after searching the forums a bit for a topic like this one I decided to post one to see what you all might think.

Any input would be helpful.

Thank You, Madhatta.  <

Could someone tell me if this is in the right forum. I am really looking to get some feedback on it so I would like it to be seen if its in the wrong forum as of now. If it just hasnt gotten any responses because there is no interest then I am sorry for bringing it back up.

Thank You

I don't think it's possible, because the program would have to be unloaded from memory before the game would start.  <

I think the only way this would be remotely possible is thru a modified bios - but pretty unlikely.  <

ok it just seems to me that a program could be made that would give some instructions to the xbox before a game started. Since signal form a keyboard and mouse can be detected through the xbox it seems like something that remapped keys and made the xbox think that the keyboard and mouse hooked up were indeed an xbox controller could work. I am not experienced with the types of signals that are sent from the controller to xbox to make it read in gameplay but it just seems that a midleman program of sorts could take the signal its getting and convert it to what the xbox is looking for without too much extra load on the box itself. And it may not even need to be converted as the xbox can read the input from a keyboard and mouse. I am not sure if the program would have to run while the game is running though which might be a problem since the xbox doesnt seem to be capable of multitasking. I am not an expert programmer and have never coded for an xbox so I thought I would try and get some input.  I suppose a modified bios might be needed but it seems like it could be done through software alone.

Eventually a gui could maybe even be put into place that would have profiles for certain games containing the input type and key assignment you want. A program such as this might also be capable of remapping any action in a game to any key preferred on a regualr xbox controller.

Any more input greatly appreciated.
