Title: Will Freeroam Games Get Bigger?
Post by: Clay_Trainor on June 20, 2005, 02:39:00 PM
I love games like grand theft auto, and elder scrolls, where your free to just explore a world in any way that you want.  Of course these types of games will get better, but i've been wondering whether or not they'll get any bigger?  What i mean is, will someone one day make a grand theft auto game the size of the entire planet, where it actually takes hours to fly accross, and no matter where you go in the world there is something to do?

Im hoping for a really big space simulator one day.  One where you can travel across an entire galaxy, visiting thousands of planets that you can fully explore.

How far off do you think games of this size are away? do you think they will start to come about in the next gen consoles, or do you think i'll bewaiting even longer than that?

there will come a point whenits just useless...unless thye can have the game program itself
i mean it will get to the point where you have to program somthing for every town in every city in every country...on every planet?
thats alot of data...alot of data that may not even be used or explored!
can yo imagine beta testing a game that huge?
not me lol
they will get bigger...but i doubt they will get to the size your thinking anytime soon

What about the ability to generate things on the fly from a top level description... for instance the forests in oblivion are generated by a single description of a tree and each tree comes out unique without paying a graphic designer to model each and every one of them... it also loads faster and doesn't take up much storage space at all (it just a description)...

Who's to say that such a technique couldn't be cleverly executed to generate entire worlds, creatures, etc on the fly... so that a game would never end but just evolve into infinity!  smile.gif

Spore is a little different, he wants a huge life simulator where you can fly through space and see a planet and explore every city in every country in every continent, When they have graphics to make it truley enjoyable and using the technique TS mentioned I think we could plan on seeing something like this in 2 generations. So sometime around 2015? If they couldnt randomly generate cities like that or find another way it don't think it will ever happen. it would take far to much time and money to model thousands of cities in just a world enviroment let alone multiple worlds. So like I said in 2015 I bet they will have one encompassing an entire world. Oblivion is huge, gigantic forests 200 dungeons, looks like an awesome game.

say the program which randomly generates each city once you get to it what if you explore so many cities on so many planets would it be possible to save all that game data about each city and every planet down to the smallest detail?

Right now? deffinetely not, but alot can happen in ten years. look at 1995 compared to now. Huge leaps. in 2015 with new kinds of parallel writing techinques or different ways of creating harddisks could creat huge amounts of room, if space is even the problem. In Q4 2006 HDD that go up to a terabyte will be common so in 10 years HDD will be huge. Maybe it will be maybe it won't. It will be interesting to see what comes in the next generations. From doom to Battlefield 2 in this time span, what will within the next? biggrin.gif

I personally don't like it either... unless it's multi player  tongue.gif

I like my single player games to have a distinct end and I like to have a number of challenges I can meet so I can feel satisfied that I've completed something when I'm done...

if it's multi player (not MMO  tongue.gif ) it'd be nice to have ever changing challenges and worlds etc. so that I never get board with it.

It will only get so big though, game developers want you to get bored eventually. So you'll buy the next gta or the next final fantasy.

I would love a FPS with just one big city but all the buildings are able to be explored with rooms and such and windows, I couldn't imagine a 100 vs 100 FPS battle in a city with helicopters and such. love.gif

I don't know, having worlds that big in game would be a bit much. I'd rather have a game more involved in storyline with an expanded world, but that's me.

I've always loved games with huge levels like battlefield! although you do lose some of that enjoyment of playing with friends since it's so large and impersonal in a way.

I would guess that GTA:SA is the biggest freeroam game on the console? Or Morrowmind? But that RPG has lots stuff that are basically the same.

I liked the way GTA-Like game on the PS2 was, based in london, modelled around some of the major parts of london.

I could sit there and know where to go, and what's the shortest route etc.

Surely it wouldn't be THAT difficult, if they were to combine work forces with some of the GPS Nav. Creators and use say Tom Tom map packs in-game so you could free-roam around specific places, i think that would be cool.

lol beta testing a game where u can travel to different planets and visit countries and enter each little house....that would be like, over a few billion times bigger then Morrowind. and would take so long to create none-the-less beta test. and about a few houndred disks
