Title: Any Usb Wireless Adapter With X360?
Post by: gman896 on December 05, 2005, 11:15:00 PM
Im thinkin the answer to this is no, but I couldn't find it anywhere else. Can you use any USB wireless adapter on the 360 or does it have to be MSs? $100 is quite expensive for just a USB network adapter, when you can purchase one from stores for $60 that has wifi finder, etc.

Insted of using a usb wireless adaptor why not just use a wireless access point connected by the ethernet port.

This one works great. I have the previous wireless b version. Just hook it to your computer and set it up. Then take it to your xbox.

The problem with a wireless ethernet bridge, is that it needs a seperate power supply (I think). As soon as I get my HDD (if I get one), I'll be experimenting with USB bridges and I'll post my findings.

Yes the wireless access point needs an external power source.

I have a question.

Does it matter where you connect the wireless usb adapter, because i was unable to hook it up in the back, and was able to in the front.

And it didnt work. Help would be great.

Thanks

Shouldn't make a difference.  USB is USB.

I believe the reason one why m$ adapter is dearer is because it's 802.11A? I'm not sure, or maybe it's a faster deritive of G.

B&G are compatible with each other. A is not.

I have recently purchased an xbox 360 wireless network adapter. I have set it up as per xbox instructions however when i go to test the media connection it passes all the tests except for twhen it looks for the computer, this test it fails.

Has anyone got any ideas as xbox support is useless and have given me no support whatsoever and have not returned my call in over 8 days.

Has anyone else come up against this lack of support as I have tried to complain but cannot get any email or phone number.

try plugging it into a PC and see if it finds your router/modem.

It works in the front port and the back ports.

It's meant to fit on the back.  usb is just above the ethernet:

It looks messy when plugged in the front.

I had an ASUS 802.11b ethernet bridge which I used with the original box which used USB for power (via xbox-usb convertor from ebay):

Worked fine for live (red line is the power - i made these pics years ago to show a mate)

item is Asus WL-330 dirt cheap now if you can find them.

can be used as an Access Point or an Wireless -> Ethernet Bridge

What is the verdict? Can you use any wireless USB adapter?

I'd like to save some money and use one of these:

There are about three other ones which are similar, and with the same price.

You can use MOST etherent wireless bridges, but USB-wise you can ONLY use MS's atm.

Loserkid, that's what I used smile.gif Well actually the model up, but same thing. I got mine for £19 in a bargain bucket but unfortunately I didn't get the USB power cable sad.gif I'll get one off eBay one of these days.

The xbox adapter is dual band a+g. Download the video on networking the xbox360 from Live. It talks about media streaming using the A band to dodge interference from microwave and 2.4 ghz phones.

Hey loserkid, jus been looking at these nifty little units and read that a cd comes to install them. How did u go about installing any software or does the 360 jus recognise the equipment??? Let me know as this is the cheapest (and smallest) alternative ive seen yet to MS's unit.

I did some reading right after posting, and MS uses their own protocol on the USB device. Just hope a 3rd party manufacturer makes one.

Bridges just act like an ethernet cable to your xbox. The xbox thinks its just cabled into the network, so no software is needed for the xbox.

Normally you just connect the bridge to a PC to set it up, then save the the settings, and install it into its spot next to the xbox. Easy stuff.

Kirkyjism - to set it up you need to cennect it to your pc first, I did have a setup CD but you just need to go to the IP of the device: 192.168.1.1 i think and then use the web based interface to connect to an AP and set encryption etc.

Once it has rebooted, just plug it into your 360/xbox1 and you can access Live

will have a look tonight

guys im a noob and dont fancy giving £60 for the 360wireless adapter.

Was thinking of either getting this

http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/171456/art...#fichetechnique

or the ASUS WL-330 to set up a wireless bridge to my xbox 360.

Whats best ( and easiest ! )

Would like to get myself one of those Asus devices - anyone know a good place to get one? The cheapest I can find is £32GBP for the latest model or e.£20GBP for the non-G device. Any ideas for the UK?
