Title: Rolf's Tutorial On How To Convert Mov
Post by: RolfLobker on March 07, 2003, 08:49:00 AM
Tutorial on how to convert Quicktime MOV's (With protected audio) to WMV's for use in MXM.

Things you need:

- MOV Movie you want to convert (Duh!  tongue.gif )
- Quicktime Player (get it HERE)
- RadVideotools (get it HERE)
- VirtualDub (get it HERE)
- Total Recorder (get it HERE)
- Windows Media Encoder (get it HERE)

(You may need to "register" Total Recorder in order to capture more than 40secs of Audio)

First were going to capture the audio from the Quicktime MOV:
- Fire up Quicktime Player and open the MOV you wish to convert (Don't play it yet  rolleyes.gif )
- Fire up TotalRecorder (standard setting should do the trick OK)
- In Quicktime Player check the length of the movie (Movie ->Get movie Properties -> Annotations>Time)
- In TotalRecorder set the recordinglength accordingly.
- Press [Record] in TotalRecorder and [Play] in Quicktime Player.
- Wait till the movie is over and then [Stop] TotalRecorder.
- Save your audio in TotalRecorder.

Now were going to convert the Quicktime MOV to an AVI file with Rad Videotools:

- Open Rad Video Tools and select the file you just played in Quicktime Player.
- Click on [Convert a File]
- Look at the filename (You need it later on)
- De-Select {Convert Audio} (Or not. In that case Rad Video Tools will just nag about not being able to open the Audiostream and continue just as well.)
- Click on [Convert] and leave the compression on "Full Frames (Uncompressed)" (**)
- Click [OK] and wait till it's done.

Now you have 1 Ready to convert Moviefile and 1 Ready to convert Audiofile.

But wait!

Windows Media Encoder does not accept Videofiles without audio (There has to be something wrong with it considering where it came from  wink.gif )

Let's fix that:

- Open up VirtualDub and open The AVI file you just made.
- Under {Audio} select [WAV Audio] and select the WAV file you just made (with TotalRecorder)
- Under both {Video} and {Audio} make sure [Direct Stream Copy] is selected. (**)
- {File} - [Save as...]

Now you have your videofile ready for conversion in Windows Media Encoder.

- Fire up Windows Media Encoder and go through the Wizard:

 [Broadcast, capture, or convert a file using the New Session Wizard]
  --> [OK]

 [Convert an audio or video file into a Windows Media file]
  --> [NEXT]

 [File to convert:] (<-Select your sourcefile)
 [File to Create:] (<-Select your destination)
  --> [NEXT]

 [File will stream from a Web server or play directly on a computer]
  --> [NEXT]

 [What profile do you want to use?]
 - Select "High motion video for broadband NTSC (1500 Kbps total)
  --> [FINISH]

After Windows Media Encoder finishes your .WMV is ready for use in MediaXMenu.

** Why you shouldn't compress the file between steps:
  - In the end Windows Media Encoder will do this for you and you can throw away those 500Meg files.
    If you were to Re-Encode the Movie in between steps it would only take more time en produce a lesser quality output.

A good place to get HQ Quicktime MOV's is at IGN.
The only problem is that without an account you can only download 5 a day.

Share your sources!

Edit:

Removed typos.
If someone can tell me how to gain access to the IGn movies i'd be more than happy to convert them and share them (Someone else will have to up them to usenet since I can't post with the account which has access xbox groups)

Windows Media Encoder (get it HERE)

Link doesn't work because XS shortened M I C R O S O F T to ms, but renaming it will make it work

Just thought I'd add a link to a list of video conversion tools and gui's for anyone who wants a choice or can't figure out how to use one or so... smile.gif

HERE

Hope it's useful.

Also, IGN only checks the IGN cookie to see how many videos you've downloaded. So go to your cookies folder and individually delete their cookie, close your browser, go back to IGN and get another 5.... biggrin.gif
