Title: Xbcopy, Boxplorer, From Dvd To Hdd, Read-only ?
Post by: SumDumGuy on January 27, 2003, 06:16:00 PM
Ok, here is my question. I have heard that when you use most any method to copy directly from the DVD to the Hard Disk Drive that it sets the Read Only attribute. This does not come as much of a suprise to me since it has always (as long as I can remember) been that way on Windows based computers. If you copy files from a read only media such as CD or DVD then the files all have the read only attribute set. Now there are different ways of getting around this on Windows but we ard talking about the XboX. For most things this is really not a problem. If you copy a game to the HD, the game expects to be Read Only, after all thats the format it comes on, a Read-Only DVD. But what if you are copying other files that need to have the Read Only attribute cleared. Is there a way to do this without going FTP? Does BoXplorer have any support for changing file attributes or copying them without copying that attribute?

Sorry for the questions, I would just do some testing but I have not gotten my XboX yet. I just helped my dad get his setup and was so impressed with the hacking community that I decided I needed one too. So as soon as my mod and box come in I will hopefully be answering more questions than I ask. Until then any help is appreciated.

TIA,
SumDumGuy

One other thought. This may be way off base but if you have a compressed file on CD/DVD and extract it to a hard drive in Windows it will not change the Read Only attribute from what it was at the time the compressed file was created. So if there were a decompresser for XboX then you could just take it from that route...

I don't suppose anyone has made a rar/zip or other file compression utility for the XboX yet have they?  :D

Ok, I may have found the answer to my own problem/question...

NewHDEvoX

And/Or

Attribute Fixer

supposedly in circulation and made by (the no doubt Jolly) GreenGiant. They are referenced here:

If anyone knows a source on this? If someone could post it on a.b.cd.image.xbox or anywhere really, I would be terribly indebted.

Thanks,
SDG

I have just read about Slayer's EvoX Auto Installer... Looks good except that it looks like it does not deal with the read only attribute?!?!?! Doh... I would really like to get a copy of NewHDEvoX or Attribute Fixer... Anyone? Anyone? If so, post it on alt.binaries.cd.image.xbox

TIA,

I've never had a problem with trying to copy, move or delete a file using Xbcopy, Boxplorer or FTP.
I'm not sure if there are read-only or not, but they CAN be deleted by any app.

yeah, and that is pretty normal. I mean in Windows you can overwrite and delete files with the read-only attribute set just depending on the method you use. Some methods would err, others would work. I think all of these methods force their deletes and overwrites. It's probably not an issue at all. Just in case I am writing an xbe for the xbox that will allow you to copy from DVD to the hard drive and not have the Read Only attribute set when its done. May not be necessary but it would make me fell better...  :D
