so.. i flashed my hitachi 59 drive... all is well.. working fine ... then it starts having trouble reading backups (not originals)... to where id have to try 3-4 times to make it work.. so i figure the laser is going out... and eventually stops reading backups all together (again only backups) so im guessing the laser is bad? i open it.. clean it... now it wont spin.. immediately says open tray... so i have a spare hitachi drive that i bricked ... so i remove the board off the flashed drive and replace the bricked's board with the flashed one.. again with the open tray no spin... so i reflash... no help.. so i rig up the drive with 2 washers i have to lower the laser just a tad... viola.... it spins... yet STILL only reads originals not backups???? and reg dvds work... and yes its flashed correctly.. and the laser is fine in this drive.. video coming soon

Sounds more like its a issue with your backups.
What brand disks?
How olds your burner?

Also sounds very typical of a hitachi drive.
Try this...

Defiantly sounds like it will be the laser position sensor then.

As posted above by huskerman99
Or your just unlucky enough to have to Hitachi drives with lasers dieing.
Also note if you have stealth firmware older then 1.51 (latest for Hitachi drives) wave 3 games wont work.

-.- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iywLw-s-wo4 is the video
and the piece of plastic trick u suggested didnt work either =/

Hmm all I can suggest is pot tweak and if that fails replace laser or whole drive (with something better like benQ)
Also, Any relation to Jenna Rowe?
