Title: Dvd Drive Does Not Play Games. Just Dvds.
Post by: jvoulo on April 17, 2009, 06:45:00 PM
Well here is my story. I got a used xbox off of ebay. It had the dreaded RROD. I fixed that problem. Took awhile, but it works. After the first try at fixing my problem, I put a game in and it played. Only for a couple of minutes. Then the picture got all fuzzy and it shut down.
After a couple try's I finally fixed the problem. I was happy. Well anyway, I put in a game and it came up with play DVD. I cleaned the disk, I even put in another game, with the same results. It plays DVD's, I tried that.
Then I got to thinking that someone must have changed the dvd drive. The best I can figure is that the person did not flash the new drive.

So my question is.......what can I do to fix this problem? Am I screwed? I dont have the old drive. I really dont know what to do. Do I have a paper weight on my hands?

Thanks for your help.

paperweight
sounds like the key from the drive doesnt match the motherboard so its not the original drive
you should never buy a used 360 off ebay you dont know what you are buying
but in saying so you did say it played a game for 2 minutes so drive must be good see if you can dump firmware and get the key maybe you can inject key into another drive
did you plug the sata cable back into your drive inside the box thats easily forgotten

Someone comes on here at least twice a day with the very same problem as you.

If you want to see the guy before you click HERE.

Someone on eBay is making a killing ripping you guys off.

However you stated that at one point it started to load a game then went fuzzy? weird.

That makes sense.
I have a dead 360 right now that did the same thing. It started out with no video. I did the X-clamp fix, and it worked for about a week, then I started getting games go "Fuzzy" on me (It's basically the GPU giving up again)
I tried re-doing the xclamp again with new Thermal paste etc, and I ended up with an E74 from it.....for about a minute...which then went fuzzy...and then never recovered LOL

Question the erratic behavior, that's what you question.

Hi Guys

To me this sounds like a weak laser. Try Either replacing the laser or spoofing another drive. this is because if a game booted when fixing the xbox it means that the key and the fw is fine its something else.

might be idea to get key off drive incse drive dies and if rest will still work then all you need is new dvd drive
buy used xbox from game or game station or whichever game shop you have near you same least you can take it back that way ..

How do you get the key off of the drive. So far it has been working fine. I have my fingers crossed.

I would say dont even worry about it, go ahead and get the drive i guess. But there is no such thing as a permanant fix for the red rings that anyone could do with common stuff like thermal paste, you need new heat syncs and a different metal box for the mother board not to flex. Go ahead and try to get the key i guess, but if the drive breaks down, dont buy another drive, it will eventually get 1 or 3 red lights again. Just buy a new xbox, and avoid all the hastle.
