Title: Homemade Dvd Drive Adapter And Extractor/flasher
Post by: sthetix on March 26, 2009, 06:59:00 PM
Hi, I've made lite-on Extractor based on many schematics I've found on the internet.
Basically, there are 2 schematic that I used :
-RS-232 to TTL converter with MAX3232 IC and -DVD Drive Power adapter
I join the two schematic to one board only.
I haven't tested this out but, hopefully somebody will check and make it out.
The Features : 1. DVD Adapter with On/Off Switch (with LED) 2. DVD Ejector 3. Probe-Less DVD Flasher with ON/OFF and READ switch (I've connected 11 and 12 on DVD pins to Max3232, so you need additional 2 wires to connect to the socket)
So I've attached the schematic and PCB board below. I used Cadsoft Eagle to make the schematic and autoroute it.

Very nice job making up some schematics. I made my own extractor by combining a old DVD power kit from Team Xecuter and a premade max3232 board from ebay. I think it is going to end up costing too much to buy all these parts . I understand alot of people get great satisfaction building things like this for themselves but it does seem like your trying to reinvent the wheel here.
Also get a real host. mediafire pissed me off with its pop up ads. Most isp's give you some free webspace.
But your did a really great job documenting your project and it looks like fun to build for anyone so inclined.

Thanks, I am willing to share this design to everyone. And I hope it works. I've modified a little bit, and I've uploaded it to Rapidshare

Where is the schematic of the dvd drive adapter alone. I am just looking to make my own DIY kit, then add my homemade probe. I want to put them both in a project box with onboard memory, and a few other features.
I need the specs of a circuit to power the drive and do mode B. The eject part is easy.

it is integrated there.
actually I just follow the one that i found in this :
First of all, thank you for the link. I was not surprised to see RDC behind it.
I have been using yaywoops probe with my diy kit, and it works well. I have also sold several probes to people. After all this, I have been wanting to build a connectivity kit and probe in one, on one board, and put it in a box. SO your thread has really gotten me where i need to be. I know it may be alil hard to follow, but I have incorporated the idea of the diy kit and RDC's guide, and yaywoop's guide to come up with this design. I am tired of having several small loose ports for connecting. I want it all in one easy box. It will go in a Radio Shack project box, and probably cost under $20. I am also going to add more features for myself, but I will go over that later. For now, my design is set up for the following.
Plugs in to 4 pin molex and Com port. Onbox features- Powers 360 DVD drive w/ on off feature and power led DPST Allows mode B with a light for each mode DPDT Allows for eject with led DPDT 3.5mm stereo jack serves as plug/port for Probe *3.5mm jack also has ground access which can be combined with alligator clip for ground if needed
Area 1 in light yellow is Yaywoops probe, 1a is where the com connects, 1b is a stereo jack for the probe 2 is Eject 3 is Mode B 4 is Power 5 is the 6 pin connector for my led's-5 led Anodes, and a ground 6 and all dark green areas are wired to a 10 pin connector that will be adapted to my dvd drive cable 7 is the connection internally to the 4 pin molex.
* I plan to run 3.3V to the center line of the 3.5mm jack, allowing me to make a second cable for testing led's for other projects I do. I also plan to include an onboard USB memory stick, hard wired, and a USB slot, making a work station USB dock. I may also make this a doal USB port, wiring the second up for power only, allowing me to use it as a USB charging port.
I will be purchasing the equipment to do some PCB's for this and other projects. If anyone is interested in something like this, something custom, let me know.
I have the image saved in photoshop, so if someone wants a copy of my schematics, let me know as well. I have done all the work using parts from mouser, from the parts' data sheets.

Ok, here is the board I am going to make. I can probably fit 3 or 4 on one blank board, so if anyone wants one. It was designed using the specs from the parts listed below.
lower case a through e need to be jumper with wires. This board takes a 4 line(4 pin molex) power(J2) and pins 2 and 5 from the com port(J2) from the PC. It has a Power(SW1), eject(SW3) and mode B(SW2) switch. Port 1 is a 3.5mm stereo jack that I have wired up a probe and optional ground for. J3 is for the DVD power cable. J4 is for the leds in the box. Using a 3.3v regulator and 2 0.1uF caps for 3.3v power, and an NPN transistor with 1K and 10K ohm resistors for the probe.
Parts from mouser (* used specs for board)
J1 2 pin header to Serial port Rx and Ground J2 4 pin header from 4 pin molex J3 10 pin header adapts to 12 pin to dvd drive J4 6 pin header to led array, 1 power, 2 for eject, 2 for mode b Sw1 SPDT or DPDT (*612-PBH2UEEK) this one is used on board Sw2 DPDT (612-TL2285EE) this is a vertical DPDT, latching pushbutton type, caps below Sw3 DPDT (612-TL2285EE) Port1 3.5mm Stereo port (*806-STX-3000 ) C1 0.1uF cap (*81-RPER71H104K2P1A03 C2 (*81-RPER71H104K2P1A03 ) Reg 3.3V Regulator (*595-UA78M33CKCS) NPN (*512-BC547BTF) used for probe r1 used for power on/off led w/ 5v (299-x-RC) r2 used for mode B led w/ 3.3v 1/8w 5% carbon film res where x= res value r3 used for normal mode led w/ 3.3v (291-x-RC) r4 used for eject LED w/ 3.3 v1/4W 5% carbon film res where x= res value r5 used for closed led w/ 3.3v r6 used for probe w/ 5v 1K Ohms (291-1K-RC) r7 used on probe line to probe 10K Ohms (291-10K-RC) r8 1 Ohm (optional for 3.3V on Probe port) (291-1-RC)
Button caps for vertical DPDT 612-TL2285EE (612-1C-BK) 3.5mm stereo jack for probe and ground if needed. (*17PP004-EX)
The board is was designed to fit in a radio shack project box 2" deep and 6" on one side
Hope this helps

It looks kinda DIY did you make it and if so do you have schematics id like to make my own
It´s my design. The PCB and SP232 (maxim232) is from old trash electronics. The DVD drive cable is from old Xbox. (Game port cable) I used adj. regulator LM317T to make 3.3V from 5V line. (Molex for 12V and 5V and GND) Some hot glue
I left the unnecessary voltages and leds and other Hi-Fi stuff away.

My CK kit design is working for all drives except Hitachi.
Can you give me explaination how to power up hitachi ? and also ModeB switch?
My design :
Pin 3 is at floating state, grounding momentarily it will eject the tray, and holding it will pull the tray in.
Pin 4 is not connected
Pin 6 is connected to 3.3 V
It is not working on Hitachi...any help? Hitachi won't power up, and no eject.
Must I put 3.3V to Pin 3 for All Drives?
Any help would be appreciated.

The 4 pin needs to be on a SPDT switch with 3.3V on one end and Ground on the other. It is treated just like pin 3 where Ground is Eject on 3, it is mode B on 4. YOu can also use a DPDT switch as a mode indicator. 3.3V would be on the main leg and each led would be on the other 2 legs.
