what i do is
1) turn on the xbox
2)press the eject button
3)pull out the power plug
4)plug the power plug back in
5)turn on the xbox
6)press the eject button (it will eject with one press)
7)press the eject button again
if it does not close with that i know im in mode b
I have a 79fl version i learned this method from a 78 thread
i think mode b is a service mode they would hurt themselves if they made it not possible

how exactally are you getting it into modeb with slax or the ck3 kit

not using either, I used to use slax, but then it started to skip over the spinning up disk part. I think our drives are the same just I have to use the 79 unlocker when I get into windows. did you try the way I do it?

ok so i need to find the port address of my sata as i have done 79's but used slax to get into modeb and the unlocked via the command prompt

compare the pcb's together since you have more than one 78. could it be a repaired drive? see if they changed out the pcb. different chips?

they are the same pcbs some of the ic's or chips do have different nymbers on this is really really getting to me now been at it for 2 days on one drive , i have nver had this trouble before

that is weird. you would think that if it was the same drive then it would use the same chips. i wish I could help but im still new at this, just really good at all things electronic.

yes me too good a fault finding to but im pulling my hair out with this now , i would be willing to pay somone to flash it as i had somone else have a look at it today and he had the same issues i just hope it is not new dvd firmware
