DVDKey32 Lite-On Key Retriever
Posted by Iriez | August 28 23:23 EST | News Category: Xbox360

>>A Software/Hardware combination method has been discovered on how to extract your drivekey for a lite-on drive...
This exe is a win32 app that extracts the drive key from the Lite-On 360 drive via Serial.

Be warned: This win32 program does not use the windows API. The exe writes directly to the ATA controller's I/O ports (which requires Geek Hideout's I/O dll, which I have included in the rar). It also requires that you be using an ATA - SATA adapter to connect your 360 drive to your PC, or an SATA controller that has a legacy mode (try the BIOS setup options on your controller).

Geremia - initial concept
C4eva - the CDB's and how to send them
Podger - for the code
Seventhson - for the userspace parallel ATA driver

*Please note that this is NOT a firmware hack for a lite-on drive. It is just a way to retrieve the key from the drive for use with another drive (samsung, hitachi, benq) that is capable of being modified.

This release is a revision of the original DVDKey released by Geremia for use within a windows operating system. You can find the original DOS based version by Geremia here

DeViLs360 has written a thorough tutorial using the DOS based version of DVDKey here, and should be updating shortly to include DVDKey32. The tutorial includes the creation of the RS232 Serial cable to connect to the drive, getting the key from the lite-on and spoofing it to work with another drive.

This is a great start for the Lite-On drive. Does anyone know if C4eva is still working on a method to read/write the firmware itself?

I reckon MS have a way of detecting if these new Liteon 360's have had there drive swapped.
Just watch the ebay sales of samsung/hitachi/benq drives increase followed by a ban hammer.

They won't since there are very few home modders out there with the ability to do something like this, unless somebody like T-X create a retail key retriever.

Xecuters next project then (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) a clip on device that allows you to read the key without soldering, like the spider chips or the old xbox no solder chips..

/edit to say, great work guys.. good job (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Does this still require the RS232, or is it straight sata.

Sorry for the dumb question, I'm guessing it still requires RS232

I have the VIA VT6421L PCI card, and was wondering...would I still need the RS232 serial cable + soldering to extract the drive key, or could I just plug the drive into my VIA card then run the app against it? I think this card may have a legacy mode, but I'm not sure.

Hmm...really? How exactly is DvdKey32 different than DvdKey 1.1 then?  the readme says, "It also requires that you be using an ATA - SATA adapter to connect your 360 drive to your PC, OR an SATA controller that has a legacy mode (try the BIOS setup options on your controller)."

Bacially, you're right it does exactly the same thing.. but, there are a few small differences

1. It runs in windows and not dos.... Some people have issues booting dos because of lack of floopy support or no floppy drive etc... or just couldn't be bothered rebooting....

2. You can choose a com port other than com1...

I just bricked my xbox 360 doing this so be careful. I had not problem with the using a connectivity kit. I rewired it to the rs232 no problem it was when I came to solder bridge those two points on the board I messed it up.

It is simply too small for a novice to do you need a lot of experience for this sort of thing I think.  I have no problem following the instructions or understanding it I just cannot solder those two points being a lefty I suppose that does not  help.

Can anyone retrieve the key for me?

That is true, You might want to go with a Hitachi or Samsung,  Samsung is the preferred of both.

I would recommend people to use conductive paint for those two points, makes life much easier. could always use a Qtip to clean it up.

Second for the conductive paint method, but still a little scary either way.  I think this is going to breathe new life into the modder-for-hire forum.

I hope it works though, and that we get som success reports soon, 'cause I've ordered all the necessary components and I'm gonna give it a try soon. smile.gif

Yup, here's the release info. Source is: http://360patches.com/forums/index.php

Maximus - FIRMWARE TOOLBOX V4.8
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Last minute change, thanks to DeViLs360 for pointing possible issue with spoofing drives to liteon Cheesy

WHATS NEW ON V4.8:

 - ADDED: Custom Spoofing Option on "Tools->Spoof Firmware" option (it asks for your 96 bytes inquiry.bin), this could be safer for spoofing drives to Liteon because appears Liteon drives have per-drive specific inquiry response.

If you lost you inquiry.bin file and cannot redump it, then go ahead with listed Liteon spoofing option (it will work
but you will not have the factory value).

 - ADDED: You can now open key.bin file from main window instead of manually type the key (will ask for a 16 bytes file).

 - FIXED: Clicking on firmware file didnt open properly on toolbox.

Does anybody knows if this trick works in 2 ways? read/write?
If you can write too than we only need to wait for c4e to release a custom fw?

Anyway, nice job to all!
I really thought this one would take a while or even be non-modable, especially when looking at that patent description.

This will allow you to read only the key and spoof info.  This does not dump the whole firmware yet.  From what I have seen it is a read only flash but that may change not sure.  but if they cant get a whole dump of the firmware it would be difficult to write new firmware for it.

In regards to fwtoolbox, do NOT spoof a liteon onto a samsung! There are extra inquiries that need to be dealt with that will need a special samsung firmware released for!

All other drive vendor's should be fine.

I have a PCI SATA Card with VIA VT6421L and I had the Blue Screen of Death problem aswell. This is what I've done to successfuly make DVDkey32 to work.

Podger made a new exe that uses a differnet portio driver from Geek Hideout...

Then follow DeViLs360's tutorial. With me it didn't work with the paper clip trick. Use the "power off when closing" trick instead.
Plug the serial cable, power on the drive and turn on the computer, but plug the SATA cable on Windows boot logo!

I tried with the new exe from Podger and it worked! Got myself the key and inquiry files.

Hope this help you out smile.gif

Thanks a lot to Podger for the help he gave me!

Just to follow on from Pyter's post, I have written a new exe that uses a different PortIO driver. This new one seems far more stable than the Geek's Hideout IO driver that I used previously, and as of now has not caused any BSOD's..

The only disadvantage is that there is a small install that needs to be done, but it's very simple, only needs to be done once and details are in the rarr....

Usage is the same....

This is a sorta noob question. Can you do the MS25/28 in Windows? I've always used the iPrep version and it always worked. Never bothered to look into new ways.

I had the same problem with the mutilation pic with the mode b posting. Pretty gross, didn't expect to see that from a podger posting.

Anyway, I was able to figure out how to grab the file: Copy the link to the clipboard and paste into the address bar, erase the filename at the end, leaving just the path and then you should be able to open the file from the page that opens.

No more bluescreen but no key either.  sad.gif

Check with Realterm (here: Podger's Realterm tutorial) if you're getting the "0101" sequence from Lite-On. If not then the adapter is not working, or the wiring is wrong or your serial port is not working (check if it's on 3F8/IRQ4).

Can confirm this works a treat, I had issues with DVDKEY32_1, _2 and _3 but this worked fine on 2 chipsets.

Also can confirm its faster than DVDKey 1.1 and leaves you in Windows to prep f/w

Nice one podger

Exactly. No hacked firmware for Lite-On.
But you can use the key and the spoof id provided by DVDkey to put it on an hackable drive.
