Title: Soft Unlock For The 79
Post by: podger on August 02, 2008, 08:52:00 PM
Good News!!!!!
Not quiet a soft unlock but close enough

http://rs117.rapidshare.com/files/134431461/79_Unlock.rar

Turorial:
1. Unrar the file
2. Burn the CD Image (use the .CUE File), I used ImgBurn....

3. Put 79 in Mode B With Slax 2.1
3. Insert the CD in the 79 and play the track, wait for it to finish...
4. Then press play again and straight away pause it, you should hear some noise
5. Eject the disk, using the eject button not the PC ( it does something different)
6. Run the the command in a command window
      79Unlock h
// where h is the drive letter of the 79

7. If all went well bit 4 of (0x5BD) should be set and the drive should be unlocked
8. Drive will dump and flash with Toolbox...

This is a tempory unlock,  (0x5BD) is in RAM and would need to be done each time you power the drive, although I've posted how to by pass this with the drive unlocked with a passkey.....

Has not been extensively tested but worked on 6 drives to day so far...

Thanks to OggyUK, mp3boy, Antman1 with the testing.... Also RKO Pheonix needs a mention as he unwittingly leant his 360 to Oggy today.... and Seventhson for the help early on and his fabulous blog

..............Details to follow... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Everyone, can I just take this moment to thank podger for his excellent work with the v79, first the anti passkey patch, when testing he said this wasnt possible and he has surpassed himself!!!!!!!!!

THANK YOU PODGER!!!!!!!

Anyway, thank you also podger for selecting and trusting mp3boy and myself (also Antman, god forbid if he has a life) to 'beta' test this.

I had hardware issues, the messages of OMFG It works from mp3boy were extremely difficult, but with superb support from podger, and a bit of tinkering, I can also confirm, the man is a genius, this fooker works!!!! It only took me 13 hours!!!!

mp3boy should post a few batch files in the moning (uk time)  for grabbing keys, but the credit all goes to podger, even he said this couldnt happend and it did.

It is as easy as unlocking the 79, then treating it as a v78, not sure if podge can tidy the process up, but #1 thing - IT WORKS!!!!

maximus, thank you for toolbox, maximus thank you for your early work, podge, thank you for this breakthrough.

RKO Pheonix, thakn you for the virgin v79 smile.gif

Oh, and its not 100% tested, but podger says this works on spoofed (using memdump) and hacked drives!!!!

Sticky this fooker and get it in Textbooks tutorial!!!!!

swampy, the best bit is, it doesnt appear to be chipset related, as podger will tell you (zzzzzzzz wink.gif)

lol

nforce4 + 6421 confirmed, the code just loads from a cd and tells it where it needs to be - excellent work.

now that is nice

good thing about this is it will end all those e64 errors from using too much heat to remove the resin

Nice work!!

This is the exact news and work this forum needs!!

Everyone reading this!? This is a TECHNICAL DVD-Rom forum post.  If its not the same caliber of info it probably shouldnt be posted in this forum.  Firmware flashing is NOT technical.

I would like to take a moment to Thank Podger as well for ALL the hard work he has put into this project and the Antipasskey patches!  I do believe this deserves a Xbox-Scene Announcement!!  And this will be the best announcement in quite some time that people have heard!  If you combine this hack with the Antipasskey Patch then you are all set and their is no need to ever solder to the v79 drive EVER again!  Unless you mess up the flash!  Everyone stand up and do a touchdown victory dance!  Thanks again Podger! biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif  biggrin.gif

Can you link me to where you've posted about how to pass it.

Did you read the thread at all?

Once its hacked, you dont need it unlocked, it unlocks it for flashing!!!

Also, I linked to the ant-passkey patch

Ah right sorry oggy.

What do you mean by by-passing then? If i can get it in mode B and flash it then surely it should be fine.

Do i have to follow the other thread and do that first and then follow the instructions or can i just follow the instructions on this page and it will work permenantly?

Sorry for being a noob :\.

Just follow this one.

When the drive is in modeb its only recogniseable in Windows, we couldnt upload code.

Unlocking with this allows us to upload code.

I personally wont anti-passkey patch drives as there isnt any real need, updates are rare and its just as easy to do this.

That's exactly what it does.

If I get a chance tomorrow I'll sort out a screenshot tutorial for doing this.

A couple of tips:

1 - I find VLC media player the best to use for step 4, you can double click the play button to do play/pause quick enough. Available free from www.videolan.org

2 - You need to insert a 360 game or DVD before step 8, just like if you were using a passkey.

This is great news! Big thanks and respect to all involved, however im still having problems...
I've managed to successfully dump my 79's firmware BUT only once.  Tried dumping again but it failed toolbox giving an error (unfortunately can't remember what it said dry.gif )
Now I cant get it to dump again.
When I choose dump firmware theres a long pause before the error message.
This sucks and I've seen it work only for it to stop  grr.gif

Also when drive is connected in mode B after rebooting from SLAX my PC is uber slow

Hate to be the one to drag this thread down tho as this is TOP work!

DAMN DAMN DAMN!

I just sold my 360 for a loss (bought in Dec 07) after only ever turning it on once and then opening it and finding out it was a 79fl drive.

Typical, I waited 7 months and thought everyone had given up on a softmod for this drive!!!!!

Well thanks for all the hard work anyhow!

Its a temporary unlock of the drive NOT a temporary flash.

The flash is and always will be permanent, this unlocks it so we can write code to the Drive.

Im about to do a full guide for Textbook, but a quick pointer

Podger used his notes for the release as the guide so it was inevitably a bit 'short hand'

The command IS

79unlock X

not

unlock79 as originally stated, we knew this at time of testing but we were just pleased to announce it.

Dang, i just bought a smd hotair rework station aswell, argggg

Anyway, well done podger, i got that 79FL drive sorted, the slow laser activity was the component near where you would solder the FFC connector to, i replaced it with one from a 78 drive as i knackered the orig one up with too much heat near the FFC solder point area, sorted it now anyhow, thanks all the same.

By the way, there is supposed to be a particular make of pc mainboard around that sees Hitachi 79 drives without needing to fit any chip, so im told, guy used to do bowlers, maybe he will spill the beans now its been cracked.

Good job

Just want to say thanks to all that are involved in this project. I bought a Passkey last week but had not got round to installing it. Well I have no need now.

I have just run through the insturctions for the 079 drive and can confirm it works without a problem.

I used a Slax 2.1 CD and a PCI Via sata card, one thing for people to remember that when you insert the 79 Cd and a DVD into the drive is to close the drive with the eject button pressing it twice and while the drive is closing to press eject again to stop the drive from ejecting the disk.

I can now get back to where i was before my old 360 died with an AHA chip problem.

Once again thanks everyone involved.  biggrin.gif

pretty much all new HDMI models will have Liteon.

You can find benq models still but it depends on how old of stock stores carry.  Also you might find some used systems with hitachi 79, so you should be ok.

Congrats to podger et al in finding this solution!

Remember guys, if you're flashing any of the Hitachi drives there's always the risk of bricking since you're patching the sectors. Getting to the TSOP on the 79 makes it that much harder to resolve, so make sure you're flashing it on a clean install of XP to significantly reduce the risk smile.gifsmile.gif

I can see that windows is reading it with Media Player, but when I try to play it, it doesn't work, I can`t hear anything and I get a pop-up window with an error.

Just wondering has any made  step by step on how to do this ??

another thing after i unlock and dump the FW
In 360FWtoolbox when i select smart hack patchier and i create the hacked FW is it Ixtreme1.4

also when i create the hacked FW does the FW have to be spoofed to V79
cause i know after u unlock the V79 driver u basically perform the V78 method for flashing so if that the case do i have to flash the FW back to the V79

They arent, Im sure podger is of the same belief as me, the passkey was initially essential to get past this one bit protection, podger has brought a whole new perspective to the 'scene' with this hack.

However, even with the passkey used for the first time, maximus could have 100% included the sector flashing that would have only required the passkey needed for initial install and not for updates and incorporated this into toolbox. There were posts podger came across on X-H by him that helped podger make the anti-passkey patch.

He didnt, and one can only assume that was so everyone felt they needed a passkey, not just an installer needs one therefore increasing sales.

Finally got mine flashed  laugh.gif  after watching the video tutorial off you tube.

I wasn't EJECTING the unlock disc with the wave file BEFORE running the unlock command.
This was the only difference to toolbox dumping or not.

THANKS as I literally had the soldering iron warming up when I seen the news flash!  pop.gif

Hi Guys/Girls,
I have been trying this method to flash my Hitachi 79FK with no success... sad.gif
When I boot from Slax it goes into mode B. I test by hitting the Eject button twice to get it to close/open.
I boot to windows, Plugging in the SATA cable at the Windows boot screen.
Windows finds the Drive and assigns a letter.
Now, here is my problem...When I put the Unlock disk in, the light on my 360 flashes and then the drive ejects the disk.
I tried burning to different media, Different burning programs but still no luck.
Can someone point me in the right direction please!!
Thanks,
Dragon

Dragon6790 - You need to hit the eject button on the xbox360 3 times and it will remain closed (or hit the eject button once and manually push in the drive)

This is a question that some of us have:
- Currently running Windows XP
- Drive gets to Mode B
- Step 6 (when runnig the cmd "79unlock/unlock79" the window closes automatically) (tried manually and we get - not recognized as an internal or external comand....... )

What can we do in this case?

Thank you

Anything you do on your PC requires you to have basic knowledge.

For instance, if you have to run something at command line, you either need to be in the same location as the file you're running, or it needs to be in your PATH environment variable. Otherwise Windows can't find it.

It's already been said, this is basic stuff. If you're having problems at this stage, stop now and find someone to do it for you. You REALLY don't want to brick your drive!

After a lot of trial and error success on my gigabyte ds3l motherboard.
had to have in the sata native disabled in bios when running slax to get mode b
but after this when in windows nothing happened after ejecting the drive and running the 79unlock command also the  drive would not close again.
but if after getting mode b in slax  then rebooting into the bios first and switching sata native to enabled, all worked fine in windows after that.

I did the same thing a few times and my PC locked up everytime. What I tried was when I paused it, I would close VLC and remove the disc. Then run 79unlock.exe with the drive letter assigned. It worked perfectly, then I opened FW Toolbox and patched the firmware.

Haven't actually tested the drive yet as I don't have any backups to try but I am downloading a test iso now to check it out. It does run originals still but haven't tried backups yet. FW Toolbox went through with no errors so I am assuming everything went just fine and the FW on the drive is patched.

couple quick questions to get me going.

1. when I unrar the file it gives me a folder full of stuff, do I just burn this folder onto a disc?  Or do I make this folder into an image, then burn it?  Or do I simply burn a certain file in this folder as an image?

2. When I run a command, do I open my own start -> run -> cmd

or double click in the folder somewhere and it opens a command?

i would greatly appreciate if someone could help me with these couple of issues.

thanks

If you can't figure out how to CMD the 79unlock because of drive variable then read on.

I was helping a friend try to figure this out and was having trouble in cmd . first find CMD by Start / run / CMD hit enter.  I unrared folder then open folders until you see 79Unlock exe icon, copy it to desktop, now in CMD type after the drive letter Mine was C:\desktop settings crap(Start from here) \desktop\79Unlock c ( or what ever drive letter you have) this my work around if you are getting error in command promt that drive is not detected or cant see the file ect.

1 CMD ( open by Start/ Accessories/ Command Prompt)
2 Copy 79Unlock.exe to desktop
3 in CMD type - \desktop\79Unlock c ( or Drive letter you have)

You will see it say Done!

Hope this is not a repeat post, and may seem simple to most but I hope it helps those who are stuck

You NEED to be using Firmware Toolbox 4.6 - you're using an older version... that's why the drive key isn't correct - DO NOT FLASH THE FIRMWARE USING THE OLDER VERSION

No matter what method you use to flash your drive, playing backups run this risk of being banne, this forum is for tech discussion not for retarded questions, which quite frankly, this is.

The drive is modded the same it would be if a passkey was fitted, its dumped / flashed in Toolbox still.

Try learning DOS commands, that error simply means there is not a batch or executable file associated to that command - 79unlock x means that there must be a .bat / .exe file called 79unlock in the directory you are at.

No, it must be an audio cd, the image / cue sheet is of a cd image, you cannot to our knowledge make a disc to disc copy that works wither, image to disc only.

I am unable to get to the step where you run the 79unlock command in DOS.  I can get the drive in ModeB, recognized by windows xp, play the wav file, but during or soon after playing the wav file, the xbox 360 will turn off. If I turn the xbox 360 back on, then it is no longer in ModeB. Has anyone else seen this problem or know of a fix?

Is there a certain time limit to do all these steps?

I am using the xbox 360 power supply to power the dvd drive and have a hitachi 79fl.

Thanks.

If you mean burning originals to your hardrive with the safety features installed at the same time, i use Schtrom360Xtract.
Very easy to use/get hold of (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Ok, here is the problem I am running into.

Drive is a 79fl Hitachi

Drive is in ModeB

Drive is detected by windows with an assigned letter

I do the rest and run the 79unlock dos command and it says Done!

Then I open toobox 4.6

I put a original dvd movie in the drive and run toolbox, I click on raw dump and give the bin file a name, but i keep getting the error, cannot read from drive.  When I check the firmware file it is only like 8kb and toolbox wont read it.

Any Ideas?

did you burn and play the audio file, and then pause it right away after running it a second time?

I tried for about 3 hours and ran into the same problem you are referring to.  Everything is fine until the raw dump set then I get the error.  I am using an ASUS p5ke deluxe board.  It was able to get the 79fl into mode b but apparently the same SATA channel/cable could not read the raw dump even though Windows Vista recognized the drive.

The solution..... I happen to have bought the VIA PCI SATA card 6421 long ago so gave it a try and IT WORKED.

So, to summarize.  I had to get to mode b with SLAX in dos using the ASUS SATA connection.  Then go into windows and Use the VIA PCI SATA connection in order to complete the steps.

I know, not ideal, but it works and the VIA card was very cheap.

Hope this helps some people.  Good luck

Hmm Im so close I think...

Have followed Podgers youtube vid

I can see drive in windows and after the unlock method fw toolbox will dump the firmware-all well and good

But i cant flash it, using ixtreme 1.4 hitachi rev1 is this right? Im opening flashix.bat typing drive letter and speed and name of folder. Then I get drive is not flashing and reccommends one of the four reasons why not...background programs, correct letter of drive etc...

Im doing this with a dvd movie spinning in drive btw, and i have to press eject button on xbox three times to keep the tray closed, is that right?

Just cant see where im going worng

oh one last thing using the via sata pci card but dont think thats the bad link in chain as it will dump the firmware, any ideas please?

Thanks Podger and the rest of you who did this. It is much appreciated. Does any one know how to make the firmware so there not i extreme? none of my back ups are iextreme so it will not read them. Any help would be much appreciated. Oh its works 100% and is a fairly fast method. Took maybe 10 to 15 mins on vista 32 bit and amd chipset.

You need to be using the FW toolbox, the method you are using only works for the earlier revisions of the Hitachi, for the 78 and 79 you need to use toolbox. Have a look at Podgers youtube vid, that should clear it up.

Its all about timing

Turn on the 360 drive before Slax loads the first two files (I forget their names).

It depends on what you want to do.

Do you want to install a hacked firmware or simply want the drive key?

If you Spoof the firmware to a v78 you won't need to do this method again. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Ok so did you wait for windows to completely load first then swap from the ASUS Sata to the VIA card or did you do the swap right at the load screen of windows?

Just tested this procedure on my Vista Ultimate machine X86 with an NForce 3 Chipset and it worked PERFECTLY!!!

The only differences or difficulties that I spotted were firstly getting windows to see the drive.. had to do a manual search for new devices in device manager for it to come up

I had problems with my first burn of the audio CD.. its only a small file so if you burn it too fast on the wrong media it wont read so just do a slow burn using imgburn

I had problems keeping the tray shut whilst it was in mode B but for me it was 2 clicks to close and then a 3rd whilst closing to keep it closed.

Apart from that everything worked excellently.. My biggest advice to anyone struggling with this is read read read as much as you can and then use textbooks tutorial on Youtube (I wrote each step down so i didnt forget anything)... also use textbooks written tutorial for the final flashing stage and as long as you have all the right hw/sw everything should be sweet.

A massive thanks to Podger and his team for an excellent job on this one, and also to maximus for getting us this far... it's amazing how much time and effort people put in to doing stuff like this for little or no reward when it would be easy enough to just let someone else do it.... so massive thanks to you all.

It only temporary from the perspective of dumping/flashing the drive... You would only need to follow the proceedure again if you wanted to redump or reflash the drive.. Apart from the unlocking part the flash proceedure is the exact same as for the 78....

Unlocked with a PPA Perphirals SI...something PCMCIA card through a laptop and slax 3.11.

Then I tried doing everything like you guys did in the videos, tried all the different methods mentioned and kept having the disk spin down on me and say "Can't read from drive".

But what i did was:

Used Laptop PCMCIA card (SATA) to mode b the drive, did the audio track (it isn't a wav file, its a actual cd audio track) paused it after hearing a tone right away. Took out the Cd, ran 79nlock.exe F (my drive was F) and it said "Done!!"

Then i disconnected the SATA cord from the laptop moved it to a ICH7 computer. On bootup (windows xp sp3) i confirmed the drive was visible and popped in Halo 3, after the autorun popped up i closed it, and used "Raw Dump" from Toolbox to get the firmware dump...

Hope this helps some of you. You should NOT get an error message when doing 79unlock.exe, if you did you forgot to take out the audio CD before running the command. This causes the drive to do all sorts of fun stuff. Also if you have done all of the steps in that youtube video and the game/movie spins down when you try raw or classic dump then your SATA is probably not compatible.

Huge thank you... You have no idea how many 79 drives i've destroyed trying to use a passkey... For some reason after i installed passkeys, the drive would dump and flash fine... upon removing the key a physical component on the board of the drive would burn... I never did figure out what i did wrong....

Thank you so much guys for this... For such a horrible year... this really made me smile... Glad to see all of you still continuning the spirit of knowledge sharing... My upmost respect to all of you.

Thanks a bunch Philngo24909, this worked like a charm.  I didn't even have to do a swap on the sata cards. I just hooked it up to the VIA card, did the Pslax to put the drive into ModeB and do the Podger trick.

Ok another problem.  I dumped the firmware off of the Hitachi 79FL drive and went to flash a Samsung TS-H943 drive with the Hitachi drive key and the xbox's serial number, but, for some reason the xbox wont work with the new flashed samsung drive.  The flashing and everything went perfect on the samsung but it just wont work.

The xbox is a Halo 3 edition.

My question is, is it even possible to swap one brand of drive for another or do you have to stay with the same brand of drive?

If you have to stay with the same brand of drive then what firmware should I use on this Hitachi 79fl drive when I go to flash using toolbox?  There is like 2 different ones, 79-4b00 and 79-4e10?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do you mean by spoofing to take the drive key from the hitachi dumped firmware and pasting it to the samsung firmware?  If so then yes I did that before I flashed the samsung.

got it to work under the via chipset used for flashing sammys... 79fl drive...
i tried using usb to sata.. it would half work but it wasnt in a correct mode b state... that might be because i needed to mode b it through the other part of the convertor.. but since i blew that bit up i couldnt get it into mode b using slaxs via usb... (well maybe half mode b it was strange).

When I did mine I just left the sata plugged in to the dvd and then restarted and just let it load up to windows without doing the eject trick at all and it detected it every time.  You may want to try that and see.

I tried that but with the eject trick. I'll have to try without the eject, but I don't think thats the problem, it still didn't work. We'll see...any other ideas? Thanks a lot

I've also tried a different PCI slot, but that shouldn't be the problem because in both cases the card shows up in Device Manager as VIA VT6421 RAID...

you dont eject within windows. you eject with the eject button on the 360 itself. (in mode b, press twice, to eject/close, press again when the tray retracts to make sure it stays closed, otherwise it will pop back out)

this works perfect for me on my Arcade 360. i didnt really do much with firmwares since i have a banned one and an unbanned one. i just thought to try this trick on my 79 from the arcade, works perfect. but it wont see any backups!

props to all involved with this

i kept notes for myself during the mod, and this is what i did:

Flashing XBOX 360 v79
1) Boot SLAX Live CD in PC
2) at "spinning disc...", press eject on 360 once
3) at mode b now, confirm by pressing twice to eject/close
4) press eject DURING close to have CD tray stay closed (otherwise it will eject back out in 3-5 seconds)
5) reboot PC, take out SLAX CD from PC
6) Boot to 32-bit windows, press eject during loading screen, make sure CDROM is detected in windows and note drive letter
7) Place V79 unlock CD into XBOX 360
8) Use WMP or MPC to play CD once (approx 4 seconds)
9) Play again but pause immediately during playback
10) Eject 79 unlock CD

Diablofreak,

I was talking about your Step 6.  The drive is detected but freezes the computer up. If I unplug the SATA cable then it unfreezes. I'll be trying this on a different computer tomorrow, we'll see how it goes.

I've had a couple of goes at getting this to work with no luck - I suspect the SATA chipsets on the two PCs that i tried this on is the issue.

On an Asus P5B deluxe motherboard (ICH8R chipset), the drive is not recognised by the PC when booting into winxp for the first time. On an Asus P5LD2 (ICH7R chipset) deluxe mobo, the drive is recognised in winxp, but I get the "cannot read from this drive" error when trying to dump the firmware in toolbox.

Might have to invest in a VIA 6421 addon card!

sorry if i am stating the obvious but did you load in a game DVD or movie DVD before you raw dump the firmware? toolbox should've warned you before you select raw dump.

Yeah I had the same problem when I tried using my Silicon chipset. Everything was regonized and the drive unlocked but would get that same error.  So I already had the VIA6421 pci card in my pc and someone told me to try that, which I did and it worked flawlessly.

I would bet that if you was to get that addon card and try it then your problem would be fixed.  Just remember after you unlock the drive to put in an retail dvd movie or disc before attempting to raw dump the firmware.

I hate to keep buggin you guys, Windows isn't detecting my drive, it kinda freezes, but unfreezes if I unplug my SATA cable. I have "the famous" VIA 6421 everyone says to get but its a RAID card. Could that make a difference? I've been looking in the bios but I don't know where to disable the RAID. Thanks. I tried it in a different computer but same thing. Does it matter what PCI slot its in?

Yes, the SATA is hooked up to the internal port, closest to front of comp.
Yes, my Hitachi 79FK is in Mode-B
Yes, I connected the SATA at Windows loading
Yes, I ejected in and out at Windows loading

Installed Drivers that came with card.
I have windows XP...do I need Service Pack 2?

Thank YOU!!

What version drivers are you using?  I find that some of the newer driver files cause me problems believe it or not.  Mine came with ver 5.40 drivers and those seem to be what works best with my cheapo card.

Jayperdu, you should install Service Pack 2 for Windows XP.  That was a huge system update.  I know that some devices don't work with SP1.

You can get the older or in your case newer versions of the drivers from the VIA Website.  Have you visited it yet?  I can post a link.... I think....

Sent you a PM with the link info to the old drivers section of the VIA Arena... the 5.20 drivers seem to work really well... as do some of the 4.20 drivers for doing what you are doing.  I have a rig that this is all I use it for so I am not worried about having the latest drivers... just ones that work.  Also, having SP2 will help as stated above.

Thanks for the replies. B-wiener, It's funny because I don't even have service pack 1! This most likely is the problem.

nbitzis, Yes, I visited the website. Downloaded THIS driver at their website, which includes the VT6421. In the Device Manager my card changed from VT6421 to some other number. Alright, so I try it anyways but still no luck on detecting the drive in My Computer.

I know the SATA card works because it puts it in Mode-B. I'll try the Windows service pack 2 and tell you how it goes.

Thanks

First of all great news, I had many disappointed people when I could not flash their Hitachi 0079 and now they will be happy.

Reading this thread is very worrying though. The amount of people who cant follow basic instructions and do not have a clue how to use command prompt/dos .... scary.... If you cant use command prompt you really hadnt ought to be trying to flash an expensive piece of kit

HOLY MOLLY IT WORKS!

A Million thanks to the creator.

My xbox 360 is finally hacked.

Although I had to say during my softmod I had to do it again and again because there seem to be a timer on my xbox. It can only remain unlock for so long before it turn off itself. I had to literally digest every step to flash it quick. It turned off itself 5 seconds after I've done flashed *PHEWWW*

I wish this mod came out a week sooner because now I need to scam some body to buy my 79 pass key LOL.

First it was the Blaster 360 now the 79 key.

Oh man $ down the drain.

Absolutely - tried a movie DVD and a 360 game and no luck with either. I also looked at the more detailed list of instructions that you put together, as well as the youtube video. I really think that the SATA chipset is the issue. Dont know for sure though.

I'll grab an addon card and see how that goes i guess.

Demon first copy or cut the 79Unlock file (yeah the one you can't double click on and run) to C:\document and setting\administrator and drop it in that folder.

Now press the START menu on your bottom left and select RUN. You should get a small window, erase what's there and type CMD

A window with pitch black background should appear saying something like: C:\my document and setting\administrator\*type in here (79Unlock H) or the letter of your xbox drive and you should be done

Cant see how to edit my post so I quoted instead.

Just an update to my post: I just did my first 0079FL. The unlocker worked first time. NO issues whatsoever.
It's really straightforward, just the same as flashing a 0078 except with the extra step of playing the audio file. I really dont see what people are having problems with.

Ok I also was having trouble with the command part also... I have modded several xboxes but never had to use dos. I do not have any experience with dos.  here is what i did step by step to get it to work

1.  dl the file from this link   http://rs117.rapidshare.com/files/134431461/79_Unlock.rar
2.  unrar the file to my desktop ( this leaves a folder called 79 unlock)
3.  burned the the image file using image burn (use a audio cd..choose the 1kb .cue image file)
4.  powered down my computer
5.  hooked my dvd drive to my computer (sata cable) (xbox is powered off...just like textbook my         computer will not pick up the drive if it is turned on) (make sure to connect the video cables to the back of your xbox{they do not have to be connected to the tv} if you are using the xbox to power your drive)
6.  powered on my computer and placed the slax disk into the computers drive
7.  booted into slax
8.  powered on the xbox (after the screen goes black)
9.  hit enter to start slax
10. spinning up disk message came up.... hit eject button. (the drive will be in mode b if it does not shut on the first click. If you press it 2 times it will close but not stay close. Press the button 3 times in a row and it will stay shut)
11. power down the computer( or restart it)
12. power on the computer (take out the slax disk to boot normal or enter the boot menu)
13. press the eject button on the xbox several times while windows is loading (when you see the blue bar moving back and forth.
14. open up my computer
15. find drive leter by right clicking on the drives symbols and selecting eject. your 360 drive will open leave it open (rember what letter your comptuer assigned to your xbox drive)
16. place the image disk (audio cd) in the xbox and press the eject button 3 time to keep the drive shut.
17. your computer should prompt you on what file to use to open the audio file(image file) with
18. choose windows media player to play the audio cd (image file)
19. the player will automaticaly play the file (3-5 seconds) let it play to the end
20. press play again then immedatly press the pause button.
21. press eject one the xbox dvd player ( do not right click it to eject it) leave drive open
22. close windows media player
23. open my computer
24. double click on the c drive
25. make the window smaller so you can see your desk top.
26. open the folder 79_unlock you should see 2 windows. (c drive and 79 unlock)
27. right click on the 79unlock file and select copy
28. right click on the c drive folder(on an empty spot not on any folder) then select paste (you should now see the 79 unlock file on the c drive)

29. close both folders
30. click start move to run and click it
31. type in cmd (you will see c:\Documents and Settings\Aministrator>
32. type  cd c:\ (put a space between cd and c:\) you will now see c:\>
33. type 79unlock x(x beeing the drive letter that your computer assigned to it){ space between 79unlock and the drive letter}
34. it should say "done..."

35. Place a reguar dvd or an original xbox game in the xbox drive
36. press the eject button 3 time to keep it close.
37. open up firmware toolbox ( i used ver. 4.6)

I suggest that you watch Textbook's tutorials on how to do this mod before you even get started. Without his videos this newb would have been lost....... thanks Textbook for all your help and also to Ponder for the good job
 here is the links

From what I have heard and tried you cant use the 2wire trick for the 79 you have to use slax. Also use ver 4.6 of toolbox. Older ones will show the key as multipe 7's and 4's.

Podger, you are a god among modders. Thanks man! Care to get a bit more technical about how the hack works? I love this kind of stuff.

Also, a couple of tips from my experience

A ) Dont use VLC to play the tune, i used VLC twice, and it ended up making the 79fk unresponsive after i unlocked it (wouldnt respond to eject, couldnt be read through toolbox etc). Use windows media player AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE PLAYING IT OFF THE CD because it auto-ripped it to disk for me and played it off there at the beginning.

B ) If you have an ICH7 and cant get slax to recognise the drive, disconnect ALL SATA drives off your computer, except the 79fk and power the 360 on before you power on your PC. The drive will be detected by the bios and it will try to boot from it. Just eject on the 360 drive and let it boot off your IDE DVD into SLAX. It will switch the drive to mode B and you can get into XP then.

Hey Everyone smile.gif

Sorry, but I'm not sure if everyone's talking about the same 79...

I have a 79FL, and just recieved the USB2SATA kit (Don't have SATA on my comp).

I can get all the way up to hearing the wav file, and then when I go to process it in Command Prompt, that's where I fail. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks! Good job guys!

I dont think you can use a usb to sata with 78's or 79's. I use nf4 for those drives via is also fine.

Title: Soft Unlock For The 79
Post by: dave11674 on August 09, 2008, 09:22:00 AM
ok a quick one as im sure people are still having problems

firstly i burnt the 79unlock image to cdr with imgburn v2.4 @ 2x
this will burn a .cda file to the cdr, note i burt at 2x for best results.
then i took the other files in the 79unlock folder and placed in my c:\
i burnt the slax 2.1 at the same speed as to not run into problems.
i connected my 79fl to the on board sata port of my motherboard.
connected power to it with the v2 connectivity kit i have.
people using the xobx to power up the drive please note it will switch off if the video lead is not plugged in and you may have a brick.
so i have the red light on my con kit for hitachi drives.

ok were set to go.
power up your pc with the slax v2.1 in the drive and boot it form the drive.
when you see the spinning up cd press the eject on the con kit a, note, this may require 2 presses to do so.
if it takes 2 presses then your drive is in modeB.
nore press the reset button on your pc adn take out the slax cd.

once booted into windows look in my computer and you should see the 360 drive there.
mine had the F drive letter assigned.
take note and close my computer folder.

place the 79unlock cd in the 360 drive and close, please note when opening and closing the 360 drive i use the eject button my my v2 con kit.
you should get an auto open option pop up
i chose to play with WMP
you will hear some sounds for a few seconds and the file will finish in a few seconds.
press play again then immidiately press play again to pause.
now eject the cd from the 360 drive and close drive again.
then close down WMP

now click START then RUN in the run box type cmd and press enter
this will open a black copmmand line box for you.
in this box type this..
CD\  press ENTER
then type
79unlock f press enter <<<<<<<where F was my drive letter i found from the my computer folder
before i was leaving in the 79unlock cd and i was getting sense failures..
but this time i did it i got "Done!" alone.
once you have the "Done!" thats the unlock bit done
close the dos box.

now put in a dvd film or 360 game in the 360 drive and let spin up for 20 seconds.

start up firmware toolbox v4.6 is the latest i think.
at the top click TOOLS > direct drive dump.
then in the new box click RAW DUMP
this will now dump the drives firmware.
taken from diablofreaks post #242
13) In toolbox, click Tools --> Direct Drive Dump (GDR), choose the XBOX360 drive in window, place DVD Video Disc or Original GAME Disc into XBOX360 tray, wait 20 seconds then perform RAW DUMP AS.
14) Verify Keys if necessary
15) In toolbox, click Tools --> SMART HACK PATCHER
16) Choose Output file, and rule set (for speed -- 12x is original, 8x is recommended)
17) Generate File
18) Confirm and validate key
19) In toolbox, click Tools --> Direct Drive Flash --> Differential Flash (Patch)
20) Read and Detect Differences, confirm sectors to be flashed, then START FLASHING

i hope this helps out a few as i sat n read thru all the posts to get this far,
something that some of you have not done.

please please sit n read whats been said, fair enough some is repeated time n time cos people have not read thru tongue.gif

NOTES...
this does work on both xp32 and vista64
drive letters will be diff on all systems.

Your best bet would be to get a via6421 sata card. It plugs in to a pci slot inside your computer and it's good for all drives. Cost about £15.
No offence but I think you should do a lot more reading before you attempt this.

Unless you film yourself doing it, how can we point out what you are doing wrong?

Im still getting the "cant read from the drive" error when attempting to raw dump the firmware. Looks like I (and others) are doing something wrong to get the drive unlocked in the first place - as you suggest above.

How can we test that the drive is indeed unlocked? From what i can tell there are two points:
- after you hit eject on the 360 when the 'spinning up disk' message comes up, where two presses of eject indicates you're in mode B, and
- when you get a 'done' message after running the 79Unlock program with the appropriate drive letter.

Would you get a 'done' message if the drive wasnt unlocked?
I've followed the video to the letter. The only thing i can think of is that im using WMP9 to play the audio file. Could that be the issue?

I doubt WMP9 is the issue, although Ill never rule it out.

If you read podgers OP and many of mine, you will see Textbook is gifted and gets the done message although in testing we all got Device IO Failed.

If you cant read from drive, try typing this command in DOS after 'unlock'

memdump79 X 12000 8 8000 orig.bin

Then see if this file is not all 0000000's in Hex workshop!

Are you sure you eject before unlock?

Also, Textbooks guide is a video of someone who has Hitachi modeb issues and always ahs, so following it to a T might not be helping wink.gif

I definitely ejected the dvd/game before running the unlock79 command.

Are you sure you are doing this right?

You arent supposed to have a dvd or game in the drive before running the unlock79 command. You are supposed to eject the audio disk you just burned....

Also, remember in windows media player to PLAY THE ACTUAL CD. When i put mine in, it actually gave me a popup, ripped the audio track and played it off my hard drive...

Yeah I too was also getting the, cant read from disc, error and it turned out to be my Silicon sata controller.  I already had a VIA 6421 PCI card in my pc and was told to try that.  I tried that card from the beginning of the steps to the end and it worked the first time.

I also heard that if drivers for a sata controller are not updated then you will also get this error.  Also when you eject the video cd, leave the drive tray open when you run the unlock command.  DONT CLOSE IT until you get the Done message and are ready to put in a dvd to run a rawdump.

this is how i did a bunch of 0079 in the last few days

burn the slax disc
burn the 0079 unlock disc
turn off your computer
place slax disc in pc
turn on pc
turn on xbox 360
slax boots
spins up dvd rom click EJECT <--- your now in mode b
shut down or reboot and take slax disc out
boot windows you will see the 0079 drive as a letter X:\
place the 0079 unlock audio disc in the 360  <--- might have to press eject 3 times to get it to load
you will see it start to play it after it plays it play it again and pause it
now your letter X:\ that is your 0079 run the unlocking program for that letter
you sould get ok drive blah blah
eject the audio disc from the 360
place a 360 or dvd in the 360 press eject 3 times
open toolbox and dump the firmware

thats it simple

just to note i used WMP for the audio disc
my computer is at sp3 i also have the via card

Just a quick note to say I had issues with Slax 2.1 on a abit IP35 (ICH9). I wouldn't get the trying to spin disc message in slax. So i bought a cheap via 6421 card and all is well.

Thanks to all those involved in the soft unlock method. I bought a passkey a few months ago but never used it as my eye sight had trouble focusing on the pins to solder!

Many thanks Podger, worked first time for me - no problems at all.

I have been waiting for this for quite a long time, so much appreciation.

In answer to a question above; you don't NEED to ground your PC and 360 (it doesn't hinder your flashing ability >_>) but it is recommended, as there is a small chance you could fry either your PC or Xbox, or both.

I never do it, but I like taking risks, and I enjoy seeing things going up in smoke.

No, It means you have to use the "Unlock 79" Sound file to unlock the drive if you ever want to flash it again. Once its flashed, you don't have to do anything except play your games.

nlr: Yes, it looks right. But type in the cd C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Desktop\79 Unlock command first to get in the right directory. Then just type in 79unlock X (X being your drive letter)

************************************************************************
Textbook did post a warning about the video cable, after we read some of the exepriences in this thread

The 79 soft Unlock brought a relatively unknow issue to light.

On older systems without HDMI, the console will 4 RRoD without an A/V cable and power off almost straight away.

On newer systems with HDMI there system doesn't do this.... Probably coz the the HDMI is a standard interface but had no detect loop on it, the system stays on on the assumption that there is a HDMI attached but that you forgot to power on your HDTV.... The system powers off after 5 minutes... The seems to be enough time for people to get through Slax and back into Windows before the 360 powers off...

MAKE SURE YOU USE AN OLD STYLE A/V CABLE IN THE 360 IF YOU ARE USING THE 360 TO POWER THE DRIVE....

It wasn't really noticed before coz a large majority of 79's were being done by modders due to the difficulty of installing the Passkey and they mainly use connectivity kits to power the drive... Also the HDMI systems that were being done were Benq... The last thing you do before flashing a Benq is power on/off, and 5 mins is tons of time to get through iPrep...

Thanks for this, I can confirm it also worked for me. I've killed a 79FL in the past trying to fit a passkey, this is a great improvement.

I did have to use a bit of trial and error - I think because it's a task performed in windows it's much more prone to SATA chipset issues than a Samsung MTKflash job - due to the added driver layer.

I had to use both my SATA chipsets for this, as trying to do the whole job with either one failed.

Here's what worked for me:

SIL3512 chipset used with pSLAX 2.1 to get drive into mode B.
Shut PC down and swapped drive to VIA 6421 port.
Booted to windows XP, drive detected as 'G'.
Inserted wav disk, played through to end in WMP. Double click play to pause at beginning the second time.
Ejected disk using eject botton on 360
command prompt > 79unlock g > "done!"
Dumped firmware with 360FWTB v4.6, with a DVD video in the drive.

Reason I couldn't do the whole thing with SIL SATA:
After a driver + SATA BIOS update about 12 months ago it hasn't been able to dump / flash hitachi drives, but good for mode B. I use the controller for other things so haven't bothered with a driver rollback.

Reason I couldn't do the whole thing with VIA 6421:
Drive sense errors when running 79unlock.
'Cannot read from drive' in FWTB

It can be fiddly but works 100%. Thanks!

Title: Soft Unlock For The 79
Post by: Retroplay on August 13, 2008, 11:37:00 AM
I just successfully flashed my 0079FL drive with an onboard VIA 8237 controller.
At first the PC completely froze during the 79Unlock command.
Media Player Classic turned out to be the problem, after I played the unlock cd with WMP it worked.
Great work Podger. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Btw it's my very first X360 mod ever.

Hey.  I don't have any cd's at the moment.  Can I extract the .wav from the image and burn it to a dvd and play it from that?  Will it have the same effect or no?
Title: Soft Unlock For The 79

@chimp5000

Why don't you just burn the iso to a dvd? Just cause he tells you too burn to a CD in instructions....don't take it literally. A dvd is fine. Same shit. Just burn it and play it. I don't get why you have to extract the wav file??????? I don't understand your query?

Because it wont burn to a DVD

It must be on a CD, its an image of a CD and its got a cue sheet for a reason.

You have to use slax  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)  I would power it from the xbox too. Dont put that xeno anywhere near a 78 or 79.

why wouldn't you use a xeno to power the 78 or 79? It works. The Xecuter Conn kit is where people inadvertently put the power plug upside down.  The Xeno kit has a plug that plugs in one way and works good.

Same happened to me but then I realised that I left the 79unlock CD in the drive. When I repeated the process I ejected the cd as soon as I had finished playing/stopping the audio. Then when I used the dos command I got only the done message (no error like the first time). Firmware toolbox worked a charm after this.

The FW you flash with depends on the version of FW toolbox you use. If you want none iXtreme you will need an older version, cant remember what versions of the top of my head.

I start booting up cd on my PC, then it starts booting the SLAX cd, i turn on the xbox 360, but then i never get to the message that says spinning disk, what happens is the text goes too fast and then it reaches the log in and password area!

is this something im doing wrong or i have different version of SLAX CD?

any help appreciated

OK so hopefully this will help someone out. I had lots of issues with the cannot read from drive error when trying to dump the firmware. I had to use VLC player for the unlock 79 to work correctly. I tried Media Player/Media Player Classic/Nero Showtime and none of them would let the 79unlock work correctly, I kept getting cannot read from drive in the toolbox. Use VLC just to be sure. I also kept having lockups after typing in 79unlock.... This is an IMPORTANT step - after you play the track in VLC make sure you eject the disc before running the 79unlock utility. I spent hours trying to figure out why my machine just came to a screeching halt completely locking up.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/grr.gif)  OK I can get the drive into mode b and vista recognizes it. I use 79 unlock and it says that its "Done!" but when I try doing a raw dump an error saying the the drive can not be read comes out. Can anyone tell me whats going on please? I do take out the 79 unlock CD out of the Hitachi drive and insert an original DVD into the drive and then run toolbox. Im running the onboard SATA port from my HP Media Center PC m7760n here is a link to the specs of my pc http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documen...0224&dlc=en . do i need to get a via 6421 card still or what? Ok I'm the idiot.

a) the burned disc with the one song on it has to go in your xbox dvd drive, not your computer
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif) your hitachi drive can't be a lemon, else it won't recognize the disc (duh! the reason why i'm swapping drives in the first place!)

I do notice that my hitachi drive is still spinning loudly when I am trying to dump the firmware. Does that help with anything? Also, my PowerLED keeps blinking, when my drive is manually closed. Don't know what that means. Just hints I suppose. Any clue why this might be happening?

thanks,

i FINALLY GOT IT TO WORK! THANK YOU SO MUCH PODGER AND EVERYONE ELSE!

I HAD TO PUT MY 79 IN MODE B WITH ONBOARD INTEL SATA AND THEN DUMP THE FIRMWARE WITH VIA6421. I NOTICED THAT AFTER I DID THAT, THE 79 UNDER MY COMPUTER ACTUALLY GAVE THE SIZE OF THE DVD. BEFORE WHEN I KEEP GETTING CANNOT READ FROM MY DRIVE ON TOOLBOX, I NOTICED THAT THE 79 COULD NOT PROPERLY DISPLAY THE DVD SIZE, SAYING IT WAS LIKE LESS THAN 10MB, WHICH IS INCORRECT SINCE A DVD MOVIE TYPICALLY IS 4GB+. I DO NOT  KNOW IF THIS SAYS ANYTHING BUT THAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE I GOT FROM GETTING THE TOOLBOX TO DUMP FIRMWARE INSTEAD OF "CANNOT READ FROM DRIVE" ERROR.

ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU ALL!

Worked great for me! Flashed an elite just barely! I used a Via VT6421A. For anyone having problems with windows xp freezing on startup this is what I did to get around it:
install 5.2 drivers for the via card DOWNLOAD
Put hitachi into mode b (I personally like using the dos modeb_16.exe method instead of slax) more info HERE
turn off computer (not restart)
unplug sata cable from card end, not hitachi end
turn on computer
once you see the windows loading screen with the blue bar, plug in the sata cable
windows should boot up and recognize your drive!

it took me a while to get this working and tried a million things before this method finally worked.

Try updating to the latest VIA drivers (5.6) I was having this exact problem and updating my drivers from the ones included on the CD with the card to the latest ones solved it..

http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/windows_v-raid_v580a.zip

That should be a direct link to the drivers I used (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Anyone having problems DO THIS. I was having problems left and right, nothing seemed to work properly until I ran to the store and picked up a 6421 card. I managed to get it into mode B through windows but it would take a dogs age to load the audio file, then it would error out on not being able to read the disc through toolbox. I updated the drivers and it read the CD-R instantly, and toolbox worked perfectly. Incredible! Thanks!

Done! drivers updated  this is a big must

What I used
Branded PC
Windows Vista 32bit
Via 6421A PCI Card - Hitachi 79 on CH1 no other s/ata devices connected to card
On Board S/ATA - 2 HDD's and 1 DVD-RW
Windows Media Player
ModeB by Slax2.1
Hitachi Power by XBOX with Video lead connected

Tried a PCI Sil3512 S/ATA card which failed, it played audio fine but wouldn't unlock.

PC had on-board S/ATA which hosted the Primary HDD, this didn't cause a problem but the S/ATA DVD-Drive did. Once slax had finished running, I powered off the PC  I then disconnected the internal DVD drive and booted into windows, I left the Hitachi connect the entire time ejecting the tray twice during windows splash. All drivers updated from manufacturers sites.

Big thanks to Podger, OggyUK, textbook and everyone else who contributes towards the scene.

(ok so I burnt my audio DVD then downloaded it to my pc, bought a CMD of ebay and then my xbox powered off... Anyone know why, save me reading anything?.....no, fine I'm blaiming maximus) jester.gif

ok so im a little confused on what exactly is temporary. At first i thought the unlock itself, not the flashing, was temporary, therefore i would just have to connect the drive to my pc every time i power it on and off and just run the unlock again. But i've power downed my 360 multiple times already and even unplugged the main power for a bit and plugged it back in, but my unlock seems to stay. Even after multiple power downs and restarts, i can just put in a burned game and it loads and pays perfectly. Is this how its supposed to be? is something else supposed to be temporary?

Been reading through this post, and others; Textbook's tut, and vid....

I've got a Hitachi 79FL.  I've got the VIA chipset, with the latest drivers.  SATA connected to "input 1".  Can get it into ModeB.  Can get it recognized and assigned a drive letter in Windows XP Home SP3.

Can not get the autoplay (or any play) to work, in order to run the WAV.  I insert the CD with the "image.cue" on it, drive spins up...and nothing.  Windows thinks no disc is inserted.

The CD does work, on this computer, using another cd/dvd drive. It autoplays, and I can hear the sweet, dulcet tunes Podger created.

Anyone run into this?  Is the Hitachi effd?

Thanks.

Nah due... the .cue is an image file for an Audio CD...

Use ImgBurn, select burn image and pick up the .cue file and burn.....

This will make a standard audio CD that will play...

Speedy523:
It's the flash unlock that is temporary.. So you would need to unlock anytime you wan to flash... Most likely you would only ever want to do this once.... to hack.

Thanks for the reply Podger.

Sorry, should of be clearer in my op...the audio cd works.  I used ImgBurn, as you described, and burned the image of the .cue file.  It successfully (auto)plays in my stereo cdplayer, my laptop cd player, and my 'puter's other cd drive.  Just not the 79FL.

well then it could be a combo of your laser and the media you are using... these lasers don't always read burnt media very well, this normally applies to DVD+R DL but it may also be a problem with CD-R also.. Try some other media if you can... does a regular cd play..

Ah, the laser.
Regular CD does not work, and regular DVD does not work in the 79FL.

To double check it's not a SATA driver issue, I hooked up the drive I'm trying to go to (I'm trying to spoof a Samsung for the fooked 79FL) and was able to play a regular CD, DVD, and...a CD-R (I didn't want to use the 79unlock CD).
So, if no media works in the 79FL, and the SATA channel seems to be working....it's gotta be the laser right?

Is there anything I can about this?  No laser means no ROM dump?  Which means no spoof?

just wanted to throw in my two cents for people still troubleshooting

i followed the tutorial exactly
my xp machine was freezing on both silicon and 6421a during `79unlock f`
solution turned out to be timing of the wav sound.  windows media player was too slow to pause it early enough.  VLC worked first time

my only other problem was a failure: cannot read from drive
after getting it in mode b, i switched from the silicon to the 6421a, and it started working again
it's possible that my silicon is set for raid - i haven't looked into that yet

hope this helps someone smile.gif

Tried to read firmware with toolbox, it freezes the second i click raw dump firmware as.
tried with versions 4.6 and 4.8.

Ive tried changing the sata port ive used.

I updated drivers aswell, still didnt work.

help?

I'm getting the same error.   Drive is confirmed to be open, and in mode B.  When I type '79unlock E' it completely freezes my PC for several minutes, then fails with this error and the drive can no longer be detected in Windows.

Any ideas?  I'm running Vista 64bit.

you will have to start it over again.  it means that you paused the audio track in the wrong spot.  when you play it once then press play and then pause almost immediatly and then when you type 79unlock e it should work.  kinda gotta play with it a little.

So is it possible to permanently mod the Hitachi 79 drive or would one have to apply the mod each time the xbox is turned on?

Thank You

If you unlock a drive then power cycle it you will need to unlock it again. Keep in mind unlocking is only needed when dumping and flashing the firmware.  Once you write the hacked firmware to the drive it is permanent.

means when you go to flash the drive you have to unlock it and once you turn the xbox off you have to unlock it again in order to access the fw file

Yes you can..... I posted in May how to edit your F/w to skip over the bit 4 0x5BD test..... this became known as the "Anti-Passkey" as it meant you only needed to use it once to "fix up" the f/w....

A lot of members asked why this wasn't in FWTB...

Turns out that it was since ver 4.0 circa July '07 but was not "Enabled" til after 79Unlock came out over a year later, for what I can only imagine was purely commercial reason, but you would have to Maximus what his motivations are...

This option is enabled NOW in FWTB 4.8 to enable this fix... you'll find it as an option when go to Smart Hack Patch in a section called "Special Firmwares"....

Hi, I am having some trouble with unlocking the 79fl, I have already hacked a 78 which was easier but I cant get 79 unlock cd to run in the xbox dvd drive....

I have burnt it at several different speeds and none of them work, it just wont load the cd, I have tested the cds on my pc dvd and they run fine, I have also created a audio cd with some music on it which does run in the xbox drive and its the same make of disc as the 79 unlock cd was burnt to.

I have been tring all evening and I would really really like some pointers.

Thanks alot (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Well, make sure you are playing the "audio file" from the Hitachi.
Then make sure to eject the disk before you run the unlock.

Thanks all for your tips and tricks.  And podger of course for developing the tool and the tutorial.  Just thought I'd add my experience - I tried for hours to do this on my P35 chipset mobo, tried slax and the windows tool to get the drive into mode b, with no success.  Slax didn't find the drive, no matter what port I used, at what point I turned the xbox on, or whatever combination of devices I had connected.  Using the windows mode_b tool would just reboot the comp.  As soon as I switched the whole setup over to an nForce4 based comp, slax got it into mode b right away.  From there it was easy, just followed the video tutorial on 360mods.net.  Tested out a few backups and it worked perfectly.

I am getting the same problem with the drive refusing to read the 79 audio unlock cd. DVDs read completely fine and I am positive that drive is in mode B. I have tried buring discs at 2x 4x 8x and 16x in TAO and DAO modes and still no dice.

Good News!!!!!
Not quiet a soft unlock but close enough

http://rs117.rapidsh...1/79_Unlock.rar

Turorial:

Hi there!

Okay, first of all: thanks for all the work that all of you put into this (GO PODGER! wink.gif ), building this stuff and helping folks afterwards. /bows

And im here with a problem (who woulda guessed..). Oh, i did succeed in fashing a benq before so this is not that new to me but im kinda stuck with the FL one :/

Ive read the WHOLE thread (swear!), either my problem is pretty unique or i fucked up somewhere bigtime. about 20 times (i kinda doubtit..!?)

Im quite sure the issue i have is purely driver related so any hints as to what drivers i should use wuold be greatly appreciadet, but I want to post the whole problem just to be sure..

Setup:
Nforce4 (Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9 (rls v1.0, Firmware F8)
XP 32bit SP3 "clean" install just for this because i had some strange phenomena with my fucked gaming-install  wink.gif
360Drive powered by the xbox, connected to sata port 0, video cable IS connect wink.gif
###Yeah, lot of story and too few drivernames/versions, I know, Ill insert these when im home###

All the steps work (slax-ModeB-AudiCD) but when it comes to the 79unlock..

A.
before i reinstalled XP,
I allways, no matter what, got the 112-Error (not the 5something one, never), then the done! and the drive  just locked up - it didnt respond to the drives eject-button, forcing it closed manually didnt help either, windows-explorer crashes when directed to the drive, system freezes after some time.

Then I read the only other post with a similar problem and the suggested soution seemed to be to install windows to an IDE drive (used a sata one before) and boot from that to flash the drive.
So I did.

B.
Clean install with SP3,
network drivers installed, latest nvidia chipset drivers installed, these screwed something over with the network driver, got that to work in the end somehow (install/reinstall/uninstall drivershi!t) and I could perform a successful 79Unlock with the 500something error!
4.6 Toolbox stuttered (froze/unfroze) the whole system for a bit with the orig DVD in drive, got a "unable to read from drive" when dumping the firmware.

B1.
Thougt this ("unable [...]") was related to pausing the audiofile at a wrong moment so i rebooted the pc, reset the 360drive (powercycle), when through the slax thing again,[...], when windows came up AGAIN something happended to the installed devices (re-detected some hardware, autoinstalled drivers, all seemed fine), played the audio and paused thefile at a different moment than before aaaand...
got the 112-Error again in stead of the 5XX, drive froze up like it did when running windows from the sata hdd.

C.
This wonderful experience brougth me to believe 3 things:

1. the 112-Error does not seem to neccessarily be related to booting from a sata drive as suggested, as i got this error when booting from an IDE drive as well.

2. I need help installing drivers, this is f*ing embarrasing.
Will someone please post me the order in which i should install which drivers? Network first, chipset first, whatever second/third?
And would someone please post me known-to-work nforce4-driverversions?

I'll only use this XP install for flashing a friends drive, so a "just install this chipset driver, f*ck the rest" will be perfectly allright too, the system doesnt need to perform, it just needs to work for this one $&!*'## task. Which I have sunk about 30hrs into allready (OMFG, embarrasing entry Nr. 2).

3. Ive lost about an hour of the year 2008 to the dosbox. on my homepc. /sits in a corner, weeping

Please, to the GODS of this game: Helpz please! wink.gif

Uhm.. when you read this thread max 10 pages in you will have found two different video tutorials and links to one or two pdfs explaining the whole process in quite some datail (go for the pdf to understand what you are doing).. Are you putting a game disk or DVD movie in the drive when you are trying to read the firmware?

yup, tried a 360 original and a DVD movie, both give same result.  When i the "raw dump" button, computer sits there for about a minute or two, then comes back saying "Can't read from drive".  If i click on "Classic Dump" it prompts me for a name and location of file, it "OK", then i get the "Can't read from drive" errror.

yup

here is what i've done...

boot from slax and get drive in mode B

reboot computer, leaving power to the drive on
(i've tried leaving the sata cable plugged in and plugging it in at windows boot screen.)
once in windows, i put in the unlock disc (takes 5-6 minutes, but it eventually pulls up.
play once, play and pause
close media player (tried vlc and wmp)
eject disc with 360 eject button
leave tray open
open cmd prompt and run 79unlock "x"...get the "done!" msg
close cmd prompt
insert DVD or orig. 360 game, wait for it to spin up
close out of "autoplay"
load up toolbox v4.8
click "tools" then direct drive dump then on raw dump button
always get the "cannot read drive" error.

i've flashed a 78 on this same rig before with no problem

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum.
I am seeking help regarding an issue I am struggling with.
I have read through this thread and haven't seen this problem reported so far.

My setup:
Hitachi 79FL
Xecuter Connectivity Kit
PC Motherboard: Asus P4S800D with 2 onboard SATA slots.
Slax CD 2.1

I have already flashed a few Hitachi drives like 46 and 47 models with this same setup.
But I have a problem trying to put the 79FL drive in Mode B using Slax.

I see that the drive is well recognized by the BIOS, during bootup I see:

Primary Master: HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR3120L
Secondary Master: < SATA device not found >

The Slax CD is booting but I can't get to "spinning up disc" point.

I keep getting the following sequence of errors/warnings:
"
Limiting speed to P1xx (xx are probably speed values and it's decreasing at each sequence)
Speed down requested but no transfer mode left
hard resetting port
........... ....  (ATA bus error)
"

I finally get the Linux prompt at the end.

Anyone seen this before?

I was thinking of a defect DVD drive but I've tried two 79FL and got the same symptoms.
I'm now thinking of getting the VIA 6421 PCI board, but since I've modded other Hitachi models before with this same exact setup, why would it be a SATA port issue?

Any feedbak appreciated.

Not sure why you trying to keep the drive shut, it's not mandatory to have it closed.
Also there's no power light on the DVD drive when unmounted or.. which power led are you referring to?

I would suggest you follow the instructions in the youtube video I've pasted above.

PS: please use some punctuation in your wording, that will help us to understand what you are struggling to express.

Sorry hope this is better

turned on PC/Xbox360,
Put in Slax CD, Booted From Cd.
Pressed Eject on the xbox At the "Disk Spinning Up" Cmd, Slax Continued to load.
Removed Sata from Xbox ,Restarted PC and Reconected the Sata Cable
Opened and Closed the Drive on windows Start-Up (As Per Video).
Windows Detects Drive In Device Manager ( *J* Drive ).
Put In ( 79 Unlock Cd, "Burned With Imgburn @ x2 On Cd-r").
But the Drive Will Not Stay Closed ( Just Hear a noise from the xbox, Then Tray Ejects)
( Also Just Ejects with no cd in the drive aswell )

When I Close the tray Led On the Xbox just Under The Power Button Flashes then The Tray Opens

Hope This Is Better Thanks

OK, So I assume you are powering the DVD drive directly from the Xbox not the Xecuter kit (I used the Kit but that shouldn't make much difference). You don't have to unplug/plug the SATA cable while rebooting the PC, it worked without that step for me.

I have been through the thread again and noticed this post from darkrain which might be of interest:

I used a Slax 2.1 CD and a PCI Via sata card, one thing for people to remember that when you insert the 79 Cd and a DVD into the drive is to close the drive with the eject button pressing it twice and while the drive is closing to press eject again to stop the drive from ejecting the disk.

okay to clear up confusion from my last post.

@Fighterinthewind I know that you done your share of reading, so you're not a noob. The previous reply was actually aimed at the guy you were helping.

You can actually keep the drive 2 different ways.  you push the eject button 2 twice to get the sled closing, and then once more while it's closing.

So, you probably never knew that which is why you directed smith81 to that thread about pushing it 3 times.

For learning purposes that's called a symtom of mode-b.

Anyways, when you flashed your drive you probably just pushed the drive in manually, which works too.

Well, I don't really care whom that was addressed to but your posts are just useless. They bring nothing to the discussion but criticism, I would rather hold down If I were you. We've all been noobs one day and so were you. So please show some respect.

Having a problem after unlock. I've seen the video and done a few before (albeit, with a different motherboard at the time).

Have been able to put drive into modeb ok, boot into windows, put the unlock79 CD in and play the audio CD through once, then pause after the replay. Then, when i eject via the xbox (have also tried via xtractor360 adapter as well), it does nothing. If i turn on the TV i can see the display saying the try is 'opening...', but nothing ever happens. I've tried clicking eject a few times and get no response. I need to power off the drive to get any response from it again. Using a VIA 6421 card with updated drivers. But confused over why this would be happening.

Is this a common issue? wasnt able to find anything specific after searching for any answers.

Thanks.

Hi all, I was hoping to find my own answer, and after 2 days of pulling my hair out over this simple problem I'm giving in and posting a question in this ooold old thread.

My problem is much before most people seem to be running into issues.  My 79 drive refuses to read the WAV file (Yes it is in mode B ).  I use IMGBurn with CD-RW, and have burned many CD's all at different speeds...yes even at 2x.  The disc is easily read in my computers DVD drive, but when I pop it into my xbox, it tries to run it but nothing happens...and when I open my drive that is associated with my xbox it asks me to insert a disc.

Any form of help would be sooo much appreciated...my wife is going to kill me if I don't put our xbox back together soon.

did you finalize the disc? try burning it to a cd-r instead of a cd-rw.

Hi everyone.

just flashed my 0079fl.
toolbox 4.6
slax 2.1
image.cue  {wav file}
TDK media {officemax/cheap}
Burned CD's using PowerISO.
GTA 4 Game
Onboard VIA Sata chipset
console powered drive
xbox and pc grounded togetherd with vice grips smile.gif

The box had no video out already. No RROD, but no video. Falcon chipset. Its been overheated too many times to recall. but i digress.

Flashed the DVD, everything went right along with Podgers unlock79 video on youtube.

Rebooted the xbox after the flash, RROD. Code 0102.

What gives? could the flash have caused this RROD? Can i recover from it?

i need to get this handled before i try it on a "Real" 360

if your getting 3 red lights flashing code 102 thats another issue.  If you can eject your drive but getting the 3 red lights your drive should be flashed properly.  If your trying to see the drive in windows you can't because your console is giving you rrod you will need a connectivity kit to power it up that way until you resolve your 102 problem

Say I have a mobo with a bad GPU with a v79 drive, and I switch the board out, can I use this to on my drive to play games on the new mobo?
