Hi,
first I wanted to say hello to everyone here in this community. I hope I enjoy my stay and learn a lot from smart people like you out there.
I am fairly new to this whole hacking a samsung drive. Well, I got this xbox 360 im trying to fix....It came to the conclusion that the dvd drive is shot. So I am replacing the drive with another off of ebay.
Now, my question is I know I have to check if whether this drive is a ms25 or ms28...My problem is that I threw away the top cover of the original dvd drive. Therefore, I cannot see what it was before! All I know is that the xbox was manufactured on 2006-07-10. And it's a samsung brand.
Can anyone anyone help me with this? Maybe if I open inside there might be a chip or something that might tell me something about the ms25 , ms28 issue?
Thank you in advance.

This list should help you figure it out....
http://www.360drives.com/list
That said, if you think the problems were with the motor/laser rather than the electronics then just swap the old pcb to the new drive and you willbe ready to go.... This way the DIY drive will have the correct key firmware version etc....

Can you try to dump the firmware from the drive?
Open the dumped f/w in Firmware Toolbox and it'll reveal all you need to know.

Just check out Textbooks tutorial and search for the VCC-method
You have to remove a resistor and solder a switch to it when you bridge this point it has the same pcb board as the MS25
So just look for this resistor, if its value is 0 then you have got an MS25 and if its value is something > 0(dont remember the exact value) then it is an MS28
You could also try to check http://360drives.com they started using the MS28 drives in may or june 2006 I guess

Cool, thanks guys!
I just found out that mine is a ms28. Now, trust me I've read a lot before i'm even posting here for help. I've read two ways to back up firmware/hack a ms25...but I don't see much about a ms28? Is it really that different? I heard that one has to modify simple numbers for a ms28...
Any more information on this would be great. And thanks to all that replied.

please disreguard the last post...
Cool, thanks guys!
I just found out that mine is a ms28. ok , i got this thing going on now....ONE LAST QUESTION,
Now that I am setting everything up so I wont mess up,. I'm reading this thread:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?act...69&t=563397
Do I really have to purchase that pci card even if my motherboard still has for sata/raid?
and another thing is I tried downloading that viamtk.rar file and it shows a broken link. can anyone lead me to the right place to download this file ?
thanks again.

Having a Via 6421 makes it all so simple... All the work done to improve softmoding is done with this card in mind... If you have one, you never have to open up a Benq or Samsung drive again
The Hitachi work with a wider range of card coz they are flashed in windows...

How scared of soldering a vcc switch to your drive are you? You have to remove a resistor (rated at 0 though, so if you lose it, no biggie), and simply solder a switch to each contact the resistor was on, and follow textbook's method.
Some cards support the 10-sec trick. I've gotten a variation of the 10-sec trick to work on my ICH5 once, but only once (not sure why I couldn't duplicate it).
If you're going to be doing more than one drive (or if newer fw starts surfacing and you want to update), a via card really is the way to go. I was so stubborn until I bricked a benq somehow (still not sure what went wrong), and now I can't believe I didn't buy one sooner. It really makes the process as easy as anyone says.
Good luck.

Hmm, Sounds good! I will be purchasing that PCI card.
As for soldering a new VCC chip,...I already did sodder a nme 2.0 to my benq drive....it was successful. I tried another and i smoked it. So I am not going to be soddering for a while.
Now, I need to go buy some floppy disks...
I downloaded the VIAMTK.RAR file.....
I'm going to be trying this pretty soon. As soon as I get time. wish me luck!
If I have more questions I will post here. Thank you!

Ok, I tried doing the ms28 flash on my xbox 360 and im still having problems. I have the sata card required...everything ready to go...just that I have windows xp. So I am going into "cmd" and I type mtkflash r /m orig.bin and it gives me "no drive detected" ....im following the steps on doing this and it still gives me that problem...any ideas how I can fix that?
Thanks!
this is the one i'm following

Follow this one instead - its a bit more thorough and up to date.
You dont want to be doing it in Windows for a start (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

ok, i tried that and it's a little more specified. BUT I am still getting the "NO DRIVE DETECTED" error. I followed the instructions on how to do it ........I guess it's my drive that doesn't work?? Could that be it? I am sooo frustrated and my head hurts trying to figure this out. Maybe if my drive would listen to me...I disconnected all ide/sata drives from the computer...
maybe if i update drivers on that sata card i bought off newegg

Have you ran iPrep and configured mtkflash with it?
Also, are you now using a via card?
-
Also are you running everything from a DOS command prompt and not booting windows at all?
You can also try a different SATA port on your card.

i've tried all that and yes i have the equipment required to do everything and nothing..i even tried diong the "no drive detected" tutorial and that doesn't work. it happens that everytime i go back to turn on the xbox...the system just freezes. or it says no bios installed or something.
now i have a samsung and a hitachi xbox 360 non working...great...now im gonna have to give away my fully chipped working benq xbox to my boss...
that xbox i fried was my boss'.....
