Title: Hitachi 79fl E64 Passkey Install
Post by: dtravis6666 on April 06, 2008, 03:50:00 PM
I recently tried to install a passkey in my 79FL dvd drive. After install, I powered it up and it didnt work. I'm sure I probably had something bridged but I removed the passkey and got an E64 error. I cleaned off all the solder from the pads, put it back in the 360 and it worked fine. The next morning i was going to attempt to reinstall the passkey but first powered up the 360 and the E64 error was back. I again checked to make sure all solder was cleaned off, it was. I cannot get rid of the error.

Anyone have any ideas to fix this? Can anyone pull the firmware off the dvd drive so that I can install a new drive?

E64: DVD Drive Error.... DVD Timeout, Wrong firmware, dvd is without f/w chip, etc.

You've damaged the board, shorted some pins or lifted a pad or something.....

try to get an image of the board..... a flatbed scanner works best...

I dont see any shorted pins. I did lift some pads but those pads dont look like they go anywhere. Here is the image of the board.

looking at your pic the 2 traces on the right side are broken.  they need to be repaired for it to work again.

The image is pretty bad

Most of the tracks just go to a second set of pads but 2 go to vias and goes to VSS, these need to be reconnected.... You'll need to make tham all good if you want to put the passkey on again..

see this for guidance...

But top right pin being pin 17

18 goes to a test point - may or may not be necessary

19 goes to a test point - may or may not be necessary

24 is connected to a VSS plane fill... this must be connected or nothing will happen, it's the only ground on the chip...

I'm not really sure I am following you. You say the top right pin is #17 with references to 18, 19, and 24 but there are only 16 pads. Can you be a little more clear about this please?

1-16 are on the other end of the chip with resin still on 17-32 are the end you are working on
looking at your pic 17 is on the right and 32 is on the left

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up. I will give it a shot this weekend and report back my progress.

btw, the pad for pin 17 is completely gone. I can connect one end of the wire to pin 17 on the firmware chip but where would I connect the other end? I don't see it going anywhere after the pad and I obviously cannot reconnect it to the pad since its no longer there.

If the pad doesn't go anywhere then there's no need to reconnect it from the chip. However, this is what my topic's about too.

I need to know where the pads lead so I can reconstruct the stuff I broke. Does anyone know this?

repair the top 2 connections to the far right from your pic and it will work.  just bridge them back together.  (IMG:http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn189/dtravis3/scan00021.jpg)

Did you connect pin 24 back up.... it's 8th in form the right and it goes to the via straight up from it, ot Tp362 which is probably more handy

man you guys needs to forget about the Passkey if can't solder worth a shit.

If you want the drive downgraded with 78 series firmware and patched with
iXtreme 1.4 and spoofed back as a 79, PM me.

I've got all the hardware to do the job. and several on here will vouche for
my work. 1-2 day turn around on most drives.

The problem wasn't my soldering. I pulled the pin header off without caring about the pads because I didn't think they went anywhere.

Well, regardless of the issue, your idea sounds good. I sent you a pm, please get back to me once you receive it.
