Title: Help Flashing Benq
Post by: vcr413 on April 05, 2008, 05:03:00 PM
Quick Question, i dumped my BenQ firmware using iprep (Booted From CD) and then it froze after the dump but everything was sucessful and it dumped the drive key. Can i now just go back into iprep and use the command fben to flash the firmware in the same directory?

Im sorry, that is some of the worst advice Ive ever seen.

Boot into windows, open /backups/1234567/12345/BenQ-OFW in firmware toolbox and ensure the drive key is valid (no multiple FF or 00 bytes.

Then if it is, proceed with Fben

after the the dump, firmtool should have run, this is usually where problems arise...... The process copies the virgin iXtreme from the \cfw folder to the \backup\1234567\12345\benq-cfw.bin and inserts the key from the \backup\1234567\12345\benq-ofw.bin....

If this didn't happen then flashing would leave your drive not playing games..... Most noobs then iPrep the Usb stick again, this formats the drive and erases the backup \backup\1234567\12345\benq-ofw.bin containing the key... then you're screwed.....

check the benq-ofw.bin in fw toolbox, for the key like OGGYUK said....

check the benq.cfw.bin in fw toolbox.... if it doesn't exist copy the iXtreme bin from \cfw to \backup\1234567\12345\benq-cfw.bin open it in fw toolbox an insert the key from benq-ofw.bin......

You can boot off the usb and run fben.bat

Funnily enough, it will.

How do you think it works? It copies the fle from CFW folder into /backups/???????/????? then inserts the key, if it doesnt insert the key it will be FFFFFFFFFF or 00000000 etc.

Take a look at my post here, when this happens the CFW is created but no key inserted.

What you cant defend is - You just advised a newbie to flash a file to his drive without anyone knowing it was valid, by the looks of it, it'd have been ok, but its still ill thought out advise.

vcr413 stated in he's post "everything was sucessful and it dumped the drive key" this tells me that he's opened the file in firmware toolbox already, he must have to know that he's got the key and not just a file
if the hacked firmware is 256k in size and its been made from this original firmware the its fair to say the file is ok to flash with

At no point did he say that he checked the CFW - which is the file he would have flashed to the drive.

Again, if he checks OFW and the key is there, He never said Firmtool ran, so its highly possible the file is created, but no key inserted for CFW.

you are correct at no point did he say that he checked the CFW
he oviousley checked the OFW because he states he had the drive key
ive never known a 256k file to be generated and not have the key there

your advice after my post was "Boot into windows, open /backups/1234567/12345/BenQ-OFW in firmware toolbox and ensure the drive key is valid" (no multiple FF or 00 bytes.

then you said if it is, proceed with Fben

so you never told him to check CFW

so does this meen your dvice was bad also

Correct (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I was a bit drunk and only when I read the post this morning I realised he had even posted that he had checked the key in OFW.

However podger rectified this in his post.

Which also means, my reply saying your advice was poor was also made when I was wrecked (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)

I could have just blamed it on a typo lol, I missed the closing bracket too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
