Title: Problem Reading Backups On Hitachi 79fk
Post by: rmcauliffe on March 24, 2008, 09:45:00 PM
I had a friend solder the 79 Passkey.
I didn't ask him to flash the 360 but he did it anyways.
He said it flashed OK. (However, I'm not sure what firmware package he used.)
He then said it was having problems reading backups.
So I took it back from him to see if I could do anything with it.
I noticed that all my Verbatim backups worked but all my Memorex ones didn't. (I used both Verbatims and Memorex with success on a previous 46DG 360.)
I've always made sure my backups were stealthed patched, iXtreme 1.4 compatible.

However,
Now when I make new Verbatim backups I'm getting "Unplayable Disc" errors.  All my old Verbatim backups work (almost all the time on first insert) but my new backups might take 20 insertions into the 360 before they start up.  I used to always burn at 4x using Imburn and never had a bad burn.  Now I've tried 2x and 4x on Imgburn and no luck.

1. Could there be something wrong with firmware flashing?  I don't think so as almost all of my old Verbatim backups work.  Maybe I just need to check out if he flashed with the most current version?  (Which I thought was Maximus Xtreme v1.6 Firmware for Hitachi-LG v0078 (and using Maximus 360 Firmware Toolbox v3.0 to flash.))

2. Do I need to maybe try calibrating the pot? (Like on XBOX_360_POT_CALIBRATION_V1.0_by_Moda.pdf)

3. Do I maybe have a bad batch of Verbatims?  Maybe they just need to be handled a little longer? (It seems like I can get these dual-layer and DVD-R discs to play better if I steam them up with my breath and wipe them off with a t-shirt.  Maybe I'm dreaming this but I thought there was some kind of slick film that comes off after a burn.)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

DO you have some the new verbatims from india?  They are garbage compared to the old discs made in singapore.  Always use singapore discs!  And try a pot tweak.

That's kind of what I was thinking.  (As all of my old Verbatim backups work.  Just ripped into a new 20-pack that I'm having no luck burning at all speeds.)

How can you know if the Verbatim DVD+R DL discs are made in singapore or India?  Especially when buying them online?

The crap ones are MKM003 Dye, decent ones are MKM001.

These are also made in Singapore, but the dye quality is not as good as the MKM001's (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
