A new firmware enhancement for the VAD6038 Xbox360 DVD-ROM drive and a new Xbox Backup Creator(info) to support it..

XBC 2.8 Build 275:
-Added support for BenQ VAD6038 0800 firmware
(Note: This has had limited testing, be cautious)

The 0800 Release is a firmware replacment for the BenQ VAD6038 drive to allow you to backup your own games. It is, as always, not for use on xbox live.

wait so let me get this straight...you can flash your regular 360 BenQ drive with this FW and it is then able to backup games? I don't get it, how does this work? Sorry if I am wrong, I have experience flashing drives to play backups but never learned anything about drives that back games up. Thanks.

This makes the drive detectable in Windows. That way you can use it with XBC or Schtrom. This has been available since the launch of the very first Xtreme firmware, except only for the Samsung. So now you can use either the Samsung or Benq drive. I picked up a Samsung off eBay back when it was announced that the Kreon drives were making bad backups, flashed it with the 0800 firmware, and leave it attached to my pc.

By Samsung, I mean the Samsung 360 drive... not the Samsung pc drive. Oh yea... it was also cheaper to pick up a 360 drive than the Samsung pc drive.

My understanding is that you can flash your 360 DVD drive with this firmware, then hook the DVD drive up to your computer and use xbox backup creator (or software of choice) to backup your games to an iso file on your PC.
You would then need to burn the resultant iso onto a Dual Layer DVD and put that in your 360 to play the backup and keep your original disc away from harm.

There is also a standard PC DVD-ROM drive from samsung that you can apply a (different) bios flash to and do the same thing.

The only problem is I believe that if using your 360 DVD drive, you have to flash it back again or your 360 won't work. so the best option would be to have two DVD drives, one permanently in your PC to do your backups (either a spare 360 drive or a samsung or whatever), and the other stays in your 360.

I could be wrong though...

Yeah sorry the the Xbox Connect gyuys.. my bad..

The benq 0800 fw is only for use in the pc. It was safer to treat this as a seretare version from the iXtreme.

I believe the drive key will not matter for this utility.

The Benq0800 firmware will make full iso's equivalent to the TS-H943A 5.3 firmware, PFI, DMI, SS and video.

So I flashed the benq with the 0800 firmware, it's detected in windows, i insert my forza2 game, i open XBC, and on the read tab it says this is not a true 1 for 1 copy of the image.

what do i have to to do back this game up?

Just select "Complete Backup" the other text only refers to xbox 1 and using the "sector mapper"

Post by: NeonPinHead on January 30, 2008, 01:10:00 AM
so far i've found out you need to hit the "unlock drive" button under drive tools twice and then you can read "current partition" but if you hit "complete backup" it gives you an error "Unable to determine the current visible partition" and "read failed". if you click "current partition" you have to go through this whole other process of merging the created .iso with the dmi,ss,and pfi files. and then when you check the stealth status of the image it says failed due to video section. i guess you can also merge the video section with schtrom but schtrom doesn't support the benq drive firmware.

it would be just so easy if you could read the disc as a complete backup.

New note... if you select SPTI and then unlock twice then select ASPI then read complete backup you get "the disc seems to be unlocked allready. by continuing the video section will be filled with empty data and will not be stealth compatable. Do you want to continue?" if you select ASPI and then try unlocking it doesn't seem to work.

There are some methods, easiest is a connectivity kit, other one is make your own molex>xboxdrive connector (schema's can be found when you search the forums)

yeah true, but the latest 1.4 iXtreme f/w fixes that issue, so even a bad legit backup via kreon would report as good during CR. That was my take on it. Still this is good for ppl that do not want to buy a kreon drive and already have a benq and dont mind opening up thier 360 everytime they want to backup a game... ill stick to Kreon in my PC for legit backups.

just my 2 cents.

Bang on - Whenever i want to back up a new game, I just pop it in the PC and rip away.  This does save you £15 on the Kreon drive, but i would happily pay twice that so i didn't have to unscrew my PC and Xbox everytime (unless you want to leave them both gutted)

Still, top job

Incorrect. The responses are stored/emulated with kreon drives, and may prove to be incompatible with future games for usage on xbox live.

Using a real 360 drive is the only current way to get *true* reponses.

For powering the drive do we just use the 360's power supply? It looks like that is how it was done for the Toshiba-Samsung. Just making sure.

For what it's worth, it's been stated that there's no such thing as "bad Kreon" at all, never was (see here).  Who knows what might come in the future, but so far, Kreon has been reliable.

Yes, but the response was to the 'much better result' comment.  That is not true and is misleading.  The kreon responses are emulated, which may or may not prove to be an issue in the future.

i got a quick question, if by some fiddling around u get it to do a full copy, do u know if the 0800 firmware can also test the game out on it?, i presume u would have to inject your cd key into the firmware to get the game playing in your console.

Just wondering for the sake of having to flash back and forth 0800, non 0800, once all works fine u can then flash back to the more secure benq firmware and play away.

You just stated you dont know what will be coming in the future. Seeing that my comment was in relation to future games, I dont understand the point of your reply. I did not just state that kreon is 'bad'. I stated that its responses are stored. If they choose to alter the challenge, they can do so in a way that will still get the same stored response but a legitimate drive will respond another way.

This firmware has worked well for me and it's been great so far. All of my backups come out perfect.
I have a few questions about XBC. When I make an Xbox original backup it creates a layer break file with the layer break set at 1913777, I think. It's the same layer break every time for Xbox original backups. Should it be different than an Xbox 360 game, which is always 1913760? I'm not at home right now, so I don't know the exact value of the Xbox original layer break, but I know it's different than Xbox 360 layer breaks.

Another comment I have is about ASPI vs. SPTI. Using the Benq drive I get an error when I use ASPI but it works perfect under SPTI. I don't know if this is because of my system or the drive or what. Just thought I'd mention it.

Thank you in advance.

I can rip on aspi or spti, but cannot do complete rip, have to do partion, then ss,pfi, dfi seperatly. rebuilt with mulleter. after i burn the game boots then locks up and gives dirty disc error. iso in mulleter says ss is fine but has a invlid checksum. using via card on vista.

how long does it take you guys to make these builds? Btw, will this version make the copies true stealth. I know the lastest one(v2.7 build 0265)  didn't do it correctly for ixtreme 1.4. I had to patch it using the latest  Mulleter.

Or is that always going to be the case. You just have to use Mulleter to patch the iso. I mean it's not hard to do, but that would be nice if the stealth was automatic. Like I said above, I used the latest XBC as of Dec 30, 2007 and it don't make stealth copies. I know I knw I could just try it. So if anyone know if it makes stealth right off the bat post your results.

Here you may very wrong. The xbox backup creator(All the versions even the latest 2.8) it make fully stealthed images of original xbox1 & xbox360 games. I try it to many games. I quess you may do something wrong and your images isn't stealthed for ixtreme 1.4 because me to the ixtreme 1.4 firmware i have and the games i ripred with xbox backup creator works perfectly.

like me he probably didn't even touch the settings. if all your drivers and everything else is setup properly this is the run down of operating this program to create a successful backup...

insert game into 360 drive
open program
select 360 drive from drop down
hit "read" ("complete backup" should all ready be selected)
make sure it's stealth using "stealth check" in "image tools"
write the image to a dvd+r dual layer using a dual layer dvd writer

it's pretty straight forward if the above doesn't go as planned the problem is not the program.

Ya, I didn't really change many of the settings because I don't know what most of them do. In the options menu make sure you choose the right drive (VAD6038 for Benq) and the type of game you're backing up, Xbox one or Xbox 360. In the read section make sure the right drive is selected. It doesn't seem to remember your last setting, so you have to change it back every time. Complete Backup was selected....Sector Mapping for Xbox one was selected. I always used SPTI, not ASPI for some reason I don't understand. Other than that I didn't change anything.
As for the SATA card I didn't install any drivers for it at all. It just detected itself and always worked so I didn't bother with the drivers.
That's all I can think of telling you at the moment.
Good luck.

I had the same problem (could not select complete backup - but I could read the disc and create an inage from it using the current partition option) and so downrevved to 5.20A.
Now, although the complete backup is selected.  the option to change this is greyed out as is the start button.
i have slected the correct type of drive and also xbox 360 media in options.
I have selected SPTI and ASPI but they stil remain greyed

I just did that myself, however I have not had the chance to test the backup yet.  I will do so later today.  Question for you:  Did you leave your Benq flashed with the 0800 fw or did you reflash it with the ix fw?

Also I wondering if anyone else can answer this: Can you create a 0800 iso for the benq and swap it out with the game instead of flashing the firmware?  I would think flashing and reflashing would leave you prone to bricking Xbox 360 DVD rom.  I haven't tried it yet, but was just wondering if anyone else has attempted this and got postive results happy.gif

Hi guys. ive just updated to the newest Xbox Backup Creator. On the last version I had I couldnt access the ASPI option at the top drop down box. Ive got an internal drive connected to my pc with the latest Kreon fw applied. I thought id use this new option to see if it made any difference to backups. The first thing i noticed is a message saying getting 1:1 info, followed by "creating split video 1:1 video" It doesnt say this when you select the SPTI option so being as the last version of XBC never had this does this mean that my backups arnt properly stealthed. Does it matter what option u pick. All my previous backup pass all the mulleter tests so should It matter? Thanks guys in advance

I just did that myself, however I have not had the chance to test the backup yet. I will do so later today. Question for you: Did you leave your Benq flashed with the 0800 fw or did you reflash it with the ix fw?

Yes after making the backup, i reflashed the benq drive back to its latest ixtreme fw - non 0800, everything played fine.

Can you flash the drive with this firmware using iprep?  Dosflash32 doesn't work for me and I don't know how to use dosflash16.  (Although I could probably figure it out if I had to).

Just wondering, where can I find the installer for this version of XBCr?  I'm running Vista and the exe alone doesn't run as it's looking for a file from the VB6 runtime.  The usual solution is to run the installer version of this tool.  Thanks!

What is the difference between SPTI and ASPI?  Do I need to concern myself with it if I just use XBC to burn?

I've been searching everywhere to figure out how to correctly flash the BenQ drive with the 0800 firmware but can't seem to find any tutorials. Would someone be willing to type up a very brief tutorial or possibly point me to a samsung 0800 tutorial? I've looked all around for something having to do with flashing the samsung w/ xtrm0800.bin but all i can find are people discussing the enable0800.iso image that provides a temporary solution. What programs do you use in what order to flash the BenQ with 0800?

After doing some more reading I came across DosFlash32 as opposed to the many tutorials I had seen involving DosFlash16. DosFlash32 seems to be incredibly easy but there is almost no mention of it anywhere on the internet as far as user experiences and reliability. I'm thinking I might try flashing my BenQ with DosFlash32 as it looks so simple but I would appreciate it if anyone could comment on their experience with this program.

Also, I have looked over the 2008 guide by textbook and can't figure out what iPrep does other than the certain things outlined in the guide. Is iPrep only useful for flashing iXtreme firmware or can it be used for the benq0800.bin as well? Also, when a person types "dBen ####### #####" and it reads the firmware where is this firmware saved - just as orig.bin on the USB thumbdrive? Is there a way to read multiple times and specify a certain filename?

If anyone can comment on these things I would really appreciate it.

XBC 2.8 Build 275:
-Added support for BenQ VAD6038 0800 firmware
(Note: This has had limited testing, be cautious)[/i]

The 0800 Release is a firmware replacment for the BenQ VAD6038 drive to allow you to backup your own games. It is, as always, not for use on xbox live.

Hello...

I keep getting errors while I burn and XBox Backup Creator retries and retries and then finally works. Can anyone help me figure out why this happens?

Thanks!

I just want to verify this.  If I buy a secondary 360 drive to use in my computer with a connecting kit, like a TS-H943A drive, I can make a backup rip without flashing anything?  Is this right?  The key on the dvd-rom does not need updated, unless i want to use that as a drive in the 360 also?

Thanks for the help!

you will need to flash your backup drive (Sammy TS or Benq) with 0800 firmware so it can be seen in windows (and no the key does not matter for B/U purposes)... and you will have to flash the drive in your 360 with iXtreme 1.5 so it can read the backups.... but other than that, no you do not have to flash anything.... Okay so this may not be quite the right thread (sorry but I searched without results and this was linked to XBC dl). I've bean using XBC for some time now, great program. Just set up a new computer with win 7... bean trying to solve this all evening. As far as I understand from the read me's XBC only works on win XP. Is there a fix or something in the works? Thanks

Ahh my bad I realize I should have posted in software>pc tools.
