Title: Dvd Drive Grinding After "required To Play Game Update"
Post by: madder on December 31, 2007, 11:05:00 AM
Hi to all, im new to these forums so bear with me.

Oki i have a late 2005 xbox 360 with a toshiba gdr 3120l h023 dvd rom which i modded about 2 years ago with the resistor trick. Oki everything has been fine up to the time i put in Ace combat 6 fires of liberation( believed to be pal rip) (backup) on verbatim dl buned at 2.4x. It insisted on applying an update patch to my xbox in order to play the game.
I had been wary of theses patches before as i recall Transformers the game had one but that didnt cause any problems so i thought this one would be fine also.
At this point id ask does anyone no what is in these updates ive assumed that they were updates to the graphics code that the gpu needs to render new game methods ? y /n?.
Oki so i8 applied patch and played game no issues. I then went to put another backup in and the dvd drive started making this horrid slipping noise, almost like and if anyone has ever put 2 cds or dvds in a tray they wil no the noise i mean. So i went through and tried more games i new to work  all the same, i Then tried proper xbox360 games the same. The games would either come up as unplayable or would play but the dvddrive would be making such a load noise, almost like the drive wasnt being sent the spindown command i went to eject the drive once and the disk was still spinning????.
However if i put ace combat 6 back in the dvd drive performs faultlessly.
Ive had the xbox apart 3 times today to examine the internal of the dvd drive, i think the noise is the rotation of the disk hitting the laser mount, i tried in vain to tighten the 2 screws that hold the lazer mount tilting grommets down this seemed to work a bit as the games will now play but still makes a really bad noise.
I cannot see that the drive is in any way worn out as ive used it less than 50 hours since i purchased it, im off the generation to buy the consoles but not use them, its more the modding of them and the getting one up on the developeers than the actual use of the machines.
I wonder is it worth reflashing the dvdrom and seeing if that makes a diffenece im sure that its the update in some way that has fubared it. A freind of mine also confirms a similar thing happened to him when he applied a software update

x says:
odd i had a sililar thing with need for speed pro
x says:
wanted to do an update then every new game i tried made the player grind
x says:
that said all my old games still work
x says:
its only newer ones that wont
So is this a new way that microsoft is targetting modded drives?
any thoughts or input would be gratefully received

It's only the laser that moves up and down. For some reason the drive cannot focus the ligt spot on the track. Have u tried another disc that used to work?

Yes i have tried disks that used to work fine.
The dvd laser is held in a fixed position ( laser only moves lateraly across the disk) when the drive tray is closed. The action of full insertion lifts the assembly up and into place. If for any reason the disk doesnt spin true it will make contact with the laser assembly.
My drive does not have bump stops.  http://www.divineo.co.uk/cgi-bin/div-uk/360-p360.
